UP prepares to commemorate 100 years of Kakori Train Action

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government will observe the 100th year of the Kakori Train Action with a string of activities, such as creative writing competitions and a Tiranga Mela, it said on Tuesday. On August 9, 1925, in Kakori, Indian freedom fighters looted the treasury of the British government to buy arms for their fight against the British Raj. In 1927, Ram Prasad 'Bismil', Ashfaqulla Khan and Thakur, and Roshan Singh were hanged by the British government for their involvement in the incident. The culture department of the government has announced Prabhat Pheri, a motorcycle rally, an exhibition of the freedom movement, and a plantation drive to mark the day, according to a statement. On August 8, an instrumental version of the National Anthem will be played at various martyrs' memorials in the state, officials said. 'Around 300 students from various schools of Kakori are expected to participate in various cultural and literary events,' the statement read. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is likely to be a part of the events. In a meeting on Monday evening, Lucknow Divisional Commissioner Roshan Jacob directed that preparations be completed at Kakori Smriti Sthal in Baaznagar in Kakori. On July 13, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that the centenary year of the Kakori train robbery will be grandly celebrated in Lucknow. 'Kakori is located at a short distance from Lucknow, and Lucknow has a very close relationship with this historical event. Therefore, my effort will be to celebrate the centenary year of the Kakori incident in a grand manner in the city as well as other places,' the minister then said. 'In August 1925, an incident took place at a railway station near Lucknow which shook the foundations of British rule. The revolutionaries fighting for freedom looted the British treasury near the Kakori Railway Station for the freedom of India,' he said. Revolutionaries Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqullah Khan, and Sachin Nath Bakshi were involved in the incident. 'When the trial of the Kakori case began, (former UP chief minister) Chandra Bhanu Gupta stood in the court with eminent lawyer Govind Ballabh Pant (first chief minister of UP, then United Provinces) on behalf of the revolutionaries,' the defence minister said.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan commences at Waltair Division

The Waltair Railway Division will be observing 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' from August 1-15, 2025. Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Lalit Bohra led a Prabhat Pheri with the participation of officers, staff, Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, and Swachh Sewaks at the railway station here on Friday (August 1, 2025). Mr. Lalit Bohra emphasised that the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan aims to eliminate single-use plastic, ensure effective waste disposal, and create public awareness and participation towards a cleaner environment. The DRM administered the Swachhta Pledge to officers, staff, and the public, who pledged to uphold cleanliness and participate in these activities under the Swachh Bharat Mission. ADRM (Operations) Manoj Kumar Sahoo, ADRM (Infrastructure) E. Santharam, Senior Divisional Mechanical Engineer and Head of Environment-cum-Housekeeping Management Praveen Bhati, and other branch officers participated. Swachhta Pledge was also taken at Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Rayagada, Koraput, Jagdalpur, Kirandul, Araku, Simhachalam, Duvvada, Electric Loco Shed, Diesel Loco Shed, Coach Care Centre, and other units across the division. The Environment-cum-Housekeeping Management wing will conduct intensive cleanliness drives throughout the division during this period.

Swachhta Pakhwada: NTPC Ramagundam launches a fortnight-long campaign

NTPC Ramagundam and Telangana on Friday launched a fortnight-long campaign dedicated to promoting cleanliness and sustainable living. The campaign forms the crux of the 'Swachhta Pakhwada' as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan aimed at fostering environmental awareness and collective efforts towards a greener future. The campaign will conclude on May 31. At a function held on the occasion at the NTPC township in Ramagundam, all the participants took the 'Swachhta Pledge' reaffirming their dedication to cleanliness and hygiene. Later, the participants took part in a 'Safai Abhiyaan' contributing to the collective efforts to keep the surroundings clean, a press release said. Later, the participants led by NTPC Executive Director (R&T) Chandan Kumar Samanta organised a 'Prabhat Pheri' from the main shopping complex to the main gate of the residential township.

Laughing clubs to pay homage to Pahalgam terror victims

Kolkata: Members of different laughing clubs in Kolkata are set to spread the message of peace and pay homage to the Pahalgam attack victims during the World Laughter Day celebrations on Sunday. This year's theme is: "Bring joy, healing, and unity." Kolkata has around 55 clubs registered with the Laughing Academy of Eastern India. Around 20 members of Gharoa Laughing Club at Rajarhat will participate in an exercise session on laughter therapy and organise a rally in the morning. Rajkumari Jha, the club founder, said, "Every year we take part in a rally to promote laughter as one of the exercises to stay healthy. But this time, the situation is different, so our motto is to spread laughter and joy so that there is no place for hatred or violence." Members of Baishnabghata Patuli Township Laughing Club will observe one-minute of silence in memory of the Pahalgam attack victims. Samar Kumar Mitra, club secretary, said, "There will be a rally called Prabhat Pheri. We will spread the message of world peace through laughter that is a tranquillizer, equalizer and energizer."
