Food grain lifting in Odisha on a par with rest of India: Min
1 2 Kendrapada: Food Corporation of India (FCI) godowns in Odisha are currently stocked with 71,691 metric tonnes (MT) of raw rice and 380,535 MT of parboiled rice as of July 1, according to Pralhad Joshi, the minister of consumer affairs, food & public distribution, and renewable energy. In response to a query from MP Pradeep Purohit, Joshi said lifting and dispatch of food grains in Odisha are on par with the rest of India. Odisha, known for producing over 90% parboiled rice, primarily supplies this staple to neighbouring states such as Bihar, West Bengal, and Jharkhand. These states fulfill most of their National Food Security Act, 2013 (NFSA) requirements through their own procured rice under the Decentralized Procurement (DCP) mode, leading to variable lifting from FCI on a month-to-month basis. This variability, coupled with operational challenges like floods and railway restrictions due to terminal congestion, affects the overall execution of monthly movement plans. The Union govt is actively working to mitigate these operational constraints to ensure the planned lifting of food grains. Several measures have been implemented to prevent spoilage and wastage of rice stored in FCI godowns. These include adopting scientific storage practices, using adequate dunnage materials such as wooden crates, bamboo mats, and polythene sheets to prevent moisture migration, and providing fumigation covers, nylon ropes, nets, and insecticides to control pests. Also, only covered rail wagons are used for the transit of food grains to avoid damage. To further safeguard the quality of stocks, damage monitoring cells have been established at district, regional, and zonal levels to regularly monitor and reduce damages. In cases of reported negligence, appropriate actions are taken against responsible officials, the minister added. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
