Equipping youth with practical skills essential for building self-reliant, capable India: Governor
Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Saturday inaugurated the Indian Institute of Future Skills at the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) in Mysuru. In his inaugural address, Mr. Gehlot said that equipping youth with practical skills is essential for building a self-reliant and capable India. He said that skill-based education is a powerful catalyst for the social and economic empowerment of rural, underprivileged, and marginalised communities. 'Only when every youth is equipped with both knowledge and practical skills can the vision of a 'Skilled and Capable India' be realised,' he said. The Governor noted that various government initiatives—both at the Centre and in States—are helping India move towards becoming the 'Skill Capital of the World' and highlighted flagship schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana, National Skill Development Mission, National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme, and the Skill India Mission. These schemes were instrumental in enhancing youth employability and meeting industry demands. 'India has a demographic advantage with around 65% of the population under the age of 35. By providing this youth population with proper training and guidance, India can achieve economic, social, and technological strength on the global stage,' he remarked. Mr. Gehlot stressed the growing importance of emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, and digital marketing, describing them as vital areas that are transforming economies and creating new avenues for employment and innovation. Praising the collaboration behind the launch of the new skill centre, the Governor lauded the joint efforts of KSOU, the National Skill Development Corporation, Skill India, and the Ethnotech Group in establishing the Indian Institute of Future Skills at KSOU. He also commended KSOU for its NAAC A+ accreditation. Sharing a personal anecdote, the Governor recalled his early days working at the Birla company in Madhya Pradesh, where he took on multiple roles despite being appointed as a supervisor. 'Doing every kind of job helps one build comprehensive skills,' he said. Nirmalanandanatha Swami of Sri Adichunchanagiri Math, Prakashanath Swami, managing director of SJB and BGS Group of Institutions and Hospitals, Sharanappa V. Halse, Vice-Chancellor of KSOU, Nagaraja N.M., managing director of Karnataka Skill Development Corporation, and other dignitaries were present.

Delhi To Get Major EV Boost, 4,000 Electric Buses to Hit Roads
Delhi Transport and Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh on Friday promised to induct 4000-plus electric buses in the city by the year-end and promised to unveil a Yoga-based plan to manage diabetes in the coming months. "Pollution is a focus area for our government, and all departments are jointly taking steps to tackle it. At the transport department, we are determined to replace the ageing CNG buses with electric vehicles," he told IANS on completing 100 days in office. Also Read: "The introduction of EV buses is likely to offer a big relief to the public in terms of pollution and connectivity, even in congested areas," he said. He highlighted the implementation of health schemes like Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana (PMVVY) for the elderly, Ayushman Mandir, Ayushman Card, and check on irregularities in drug supply as some of the achievements of the health department in the first 100 days of the government. "The Ayushman scheme, whose benefits should have reached people long ago, was blocked by Arvind Kejriwal's government. We have supplied cards and enrolled beneficiaries through door-to-door drives," he said, adding that about 2.31 lakh beneficiaries have been issued health cards under the two schemes. The Minister hit out at the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for indulging in publicity rather than serving the people on the ground. "We could not find anything positive in the functioning of the previous government. There are scams in almost everything related to drinking water, road, pollution, Yamuna-cleaning, transportation, hospital drug supply," he said, adding that, under the previous government, just five medical superintendents were running the affairs of all major hospitals in the city. Hitting out at the AAP government and its legislators, he said, "They did not perform and indulged only in the blame game. We are focused on delivering on the promises that we made." Describing diabetes as a common ailment affecting people, he said, "We are working on a new plan named 'Diabetes-plus with yoga'. Very soon, we will share information with the public," he said, adding that the health department is focusing on the smooth functioning of free dialysis centres. NHRC takes suo motu cognisance of brutal attack on journalist in Odisha
New Delhi [India], May 30 (ANI): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of reports detailing the brutal assault of a TV journalist while he was covering alleged corruption at a construction site in Kulthipali village in Balangir district on May 25. According to media reports, the journalist was suddenly ambushed by a group of individuals while documenting the site, where locals had raised corruption allegations. The attackers reportedly tied his hands and legs, paraded him through the village, and later bound him to a pole before subjecting him to a ruthless beating. Recognising the gravity of the situation, the NHRC stated that if the allegations are true, they constitute a severe violation of human rights. Consequently, the Commission has issued a notice to the Director General of Police, Odisha, seeking a detailed report on the matter within two weeks. Further reports indicate that the perpetrators also destroyed the journalist's mobile phones and video camera, threatening him against publicising details of the incident or the alleged irregularities at the construction site. According to reports, Bijay Pradhan, a journalist from a privately-owned Odia-language news outlet, was recently tied up and brutally beaten by a group of men while investigating alleged corruption at a construction site in Kulthipali village, Bolangir district. A widely circulated video on social media shows Pradhan being kicked and dragged by his attackers. The assault, which lasted for two hours, resulted in a ruptured eardrum, and he is currently receiving treatment at Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital. Pradhan further stated that the assailants forcibly took his mobile phone, which contained footage of the incident, along with his microphone and other reporting equipment--an apparent attempt to prevent him from covering the story.
