Kendrapada: The special Pocso judge sentenced a 22-year-old man to 20 years of imprisonment on Wednesday for kidnapping and raping a 17-year-old girl in the district last year. The court imposed a fine of Rs 55,000 on the convict. Failure to pay would result in his sentence being increased by another year. On Jan 28, 2024, the survivor's mother filed an FIR alleging that the accused had kidnapped her daughter when she was alone in the house. Acting on the FIR, police arrested the accused on Feb 18, more than a year after the crime. Pronouncing the verdict, Justice Pragyan Paramita Roul convicted the man and sentenced him to 20 years of imprisonment on charges of raping and kidnapping the minor girl after relying on the evidence of nine witnesses, including the survivor and the medical report, special public prosecutor Manoj Kumar Sahu, said. Kendrapada: A Kendrapada court on Wednesday sentenced a 22-year-old man to 20 years of imprisonment for the abduction and rape of a minor girl. The additional district judge-cum-special judge (Pocso) also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convict. If he fails to pay the amount, his sentence will be extended by another year. The 13-year-old rape survivor is a student of Class 7. She was abducted while returning from her village school. The case came to light when her mother filed an FIR at the local police station on Nov 5, 2024, alleging that her daughter was kidnapped. Thereafter, police apprehended the accused on Nov 27, 2024, on charges of kidnapping and raping the minor at Anandapur. Judge Pragyan Paramita Roul, while pronouncing the verdict, convicted the man under relevant sections of BNS and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012. The conviction was based on the testimonies of 11 witnesses, including the rape survivor, and corroborated by medical reports. 1 2 Kendrapada: Additional district-cum-special judge (Pocso), Kendrapada, on Tuesday sentenced a 70-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a 9-year-old girl in Nov 2024. Judge Pragyan Paramita Roul also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convict, a neighbour of the girl. Failure to pay the fine would result in another year of imprisonment. Special public prosecutor Manoj Kumar Sahu said the verdict was based on testimonies from seven witnesses, including the survivor, and medical reports. The court also directed the Odisha State Legal Services Authority (OSLSA) to provide compensation of Rs 6 lakh to the girl, who was then a Class III student. The crime came to light when the survivor's mother filed an FIR on Nov 29, 2024, alleging that the man had raped her daughter the previous evening when she was alone at home. The elderly man had allegedly threatened to kill the girl if she revealed the incident to anyone. Police arrested the man under sections 65 (rape on a woman under 16 years of age) and 331 (house trespass or house-breaking) of BNS, along with Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.
