Prasarana Adds Final Diesel Bus Fleet Before EV Transition

Prasarana Malaysia Bhd has added 310 new diesel buses under its 2025 Bus Replacement Programme, marking the final addition of diesel-powered vehicles to its fleet as the company sets its sights on an electric bus transition by 2037. Speaking at the launch, Transport Minister Anthony Loke affirmed the move as a significant milestone in the government's push for a low-carbon, environmentally friendly public transport system. 'This marks Prasarana's final procurement of diesel buses. It's part of our long-term strategy to modernise public transport while moving toward greener alternatives. 'With these new buses, we aim to enhance service frequency, safety and accessibility for commuters in Klang Valley and Penang,' said Loke. Manufactured by Higer and fully assembled in Johor, the buses will be deployed in stages, prioritising densely populated routes with high passenger demand. Loke highlighted that the decision to locally assemble the buses supports technology transfer, encourages local job creation and strengthens the Malaysian automotive supply chain. 'All 310 buses meet the stringent Euro 5 emission standards, helping to reduce pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and improve urban air quality,' Loke said. Loke reiterated that while diesel continues to serve immediate public transport needs, the ministry is actively preparing for a full transition to electric buses by 2037. Preparatory efforts include the development of charging infrastructure, technical training and maintenance facilities. 'Prasarana is playing a leading role in supporting national policies like the National Energy Transition Roadmap (and the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint 2021-2030. 'Their strong commitment reflects the kind of strategic and effective public transport transformation Malaysia needs,' he added. He also called on both the public and private sectors to support this shift by continuing to invest in sustainable infrastructure and championing public transport as the preferred mode of travel. Electric Rapid Buses on Malaysian roads by 2026

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is expected to roll out electric-powered Rapid Buses starting from the second quarter of next year, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke. He said the tender had already been called and the awarding of the contract would be made soon. "The tender has closed. The appointment of the contractor will be made soon. It will take around 12 months to complete. "Our condition is that these buses must be built locally. Even though the technology may come from other countries, the assembly must be done in our country so that we can benefit from technology transfer and provide opportunities to local companies," he said after the unveiling ceremony of new diesel-powered Rapid Buses for Rapid KL and Rapid Penang. Loke added that Prasarana Malaysia Bhd (Prasarana) would receive the buses in phases, possibly starting from the second quarter after it has received all the diesel-powered buses. It would be the last diesel-powered buses to be received by Prasarana. Prasarana is the owner and operator of Rapid Bus. In March, Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said the ministry allocated RM1.9 billion to Prasarana to purchase 1,660 new diesel and electric buses in stages over a period of three years. He said 310 of the buses would be diesel-engine units, the last batch to use that engine type, while the remaining units would be electric vehicles.

Prasarana launches digital platform to help vendors implement ESG practices

PETALING JAYA: Prasarana Malaysia Bhd has launched digital platform Vendor ESG Hub to help nearly 5,000 registered vendors, including SMEs, enhance their capacity to implement sustainable business practices. Prasarana Group president and CEO Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah said the initiative was a strategic move to strengthen the vendor ecosystem in Prasarana's supply chain to ensure compliance with global ESG (environmental, social and governance) principles. 'The Vendor ESG Hub portal offers a range of practical resources, guides and digital tools specifically designed to help vendors understand, assess and progressively implement ESG practices. 'The digital platform is divided into four main segments – 'Assess, Inspire, Learn and Do' – which are designed to enhance vendors' capabilities and readiness to meet the demands of more sustainable future business practices,' he said at a press conference after the launch of the platform here today. The platform was launched in conjunction with the Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Sustainable Development Week 2025, underscoring Prasarana's continued commitment to supporting ESG initiatives. Mohd Azharuddin said the implementation of the platform would be carried out in phases, with the first phase involving 30 to 50 companies identified to take part in the ESG-related education and awareness programmes. He said that in addition to over 3,000 local SME vendors, international vendors from Europe and Asia, including China and Japan, were also involved. 'We will work with them and learn how to upgrade and this will apply to all vendors, whether international or local,' he said. Mohd Azharuddin also said that one of the long-term goals of the programme was to reduce carbon emissions in vendor operations. 'One of the key priorities now is reducing carbon emissions. ESG is a broad concept, but one of the actions we can take is to educate vendors on how to reduce emissions in their daily operations,' he added. – Bernama
