Ludhiana: Husband among 5 booked after UP woman's ‘mysterious death'

A murder case has been registered in Ludhiana against a man and four members of his family following a zero FIR lodged in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh. The case, now transferred to the Meharban police station, pertains to the death of 29-year-old Pratibha Yadav, who was found hanging in her home in Mahavir Enclave, Noorwala Road, on March 18. Pardeep Tiwari tragically died after being brutally thrashed by two friends and then abandoned on the roadside in Ludhiana's Bapu Market in Daba on Sunday night. (HT Photo) Though the initial autopsy report declared the cause of death as suicide, the woman's family alleged foul play and approached police in Azamgarh, their native district, where a murder FIR was registered. That FIR has now been transferred to Ludhiana police for action. On the basis of the zero FIR, the city police have booked Pratibha's husband Sarvesh Yadav, his mother Chandrawati, father Achhe Lal, sister Harshita, and brother Rakesh Yadav under sections 103(1) (murder) and 61(1) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The complaint was filed by Pratibha's brother, Vipan Kumar Yadav of Azamgarh. He alleged that his sister had been harassed by her husband and in-laws, especially after discovering that her husband was in a relationship with another woman. According to Vipan, Pratibha had called him on March 18, just hours before her death, and confided that her in-laws and husband had threatened to kill her. 'Later that same day, we received news that Pratibha had died under suspicious circumstances,' Vipan stated in his complaint. 'We strongly believe she was murdered.' However, police officials in Ludhiana maintain that the original investigation did not suggest murder. 'When Pratibha was found hanging at home, she was alone at the time. The autopsy confirmed it was suicide, and her brother's initial statement was recorded under Section 194 of BNSS,' said ASI Radhey Sham, investigating officer at Meharban police station. 'After the family returned to Azamgarh, they lodged a fresh complaint and got a murder case registered. Based on that zero FIR, we have formally registered a case in Ludhiana. However, in light of the earlier findings, the police may move for the cancellation of the FIR, subject to legal review,' the officer added. When he did not return till night they started a search for him but to no avail. On Monday morning he came to know that his son had died,'said the ACP. BJP's own people not getting justice in U.P.: Akhilesh Yadav

Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on Friday (July 25, 2025) hit out at the Uttar Pradesh government saying that the 'own people and workers' of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were 'not getting justice' in the State. His comment was directed at a viral video in which BJP leader and former MP Anil Shukla Warsi could be seen protesting at a police station in Kanpur after five BJP supporters were booked in a case under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Act. 'No one is heard in the BJP government. Their own people are not getting justice, even the Deputy CM was being scolded. In 10 years, we have come to know that the BJP is not suitable for secularism, democracy, socialism, electricity, and the future of children,' said Mr. Yadav. In the video, Mr. Shukla, whose wife Pratibha is a junior Minister in the State government, is seen confronting Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak over the phone and accusing him of 'failing to provide any security to the Brahmin community'. 'Either I should leave politics or hang myself... You were made Deputy CM to protect and provide security to Brahmins, and here Brahmins are being abused, and fake cases are being registered. This cannot continue,' Mr. Shukla is heard saying in the video. Ms. Pratibha and her husband protested for six hours outside the police station in Kanpur Dehat on July 24, demanding suspension of the local station in-charge and an inspector for allegedly filing a 'fake case'. The two accused the inspector of 'misusing' legal provisions and working under political pressure. Top district officials reached the spot and diffused the tension by promising an inquiry against the inspector. They also removed the station in-charge. Earlier, the police had registered an FIR on a complaint by a man named Baburam Gautam who had accused Abrar, Yusuf, Aslam, Yasir and Shiva Pandey of using 'casteist slurs' and issuing threats over a land dispute. All five are said to be known to Ms. Pratibha and her husband.

Pratibha Ranta opens up on going home in Shimla after 2.5 years and Laapataa Ladies success

The last time Pratibha Ranta was in her hometown Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, she was an actor in search of recognition. Last month, she returned to her home after two-and-a-half-years, and she admits the whole perception towards her of the city had changed, courtesy her breakthrough role in Laapataa Ladies (2024) and the success that followed. Pratibha Ranta 'When I left Shimla five years ago, I had this realisation that I will be going for a long time and I won't be able to come back that frequently. But when I came back, the love that I received from the city and its people, it was very beautiful. When I went to the Mall Road, people were recognising me and appreciating me. I get recognised now in other places too, but when people in your hometown do that, it is an indescribable feeling as I saw the dream of making it in the industry at that same place,' Pratibha Ranta says. Ask her what was she missing the most from home while in Mumbai and pat comes the reply, 'I was missing the food of Himachal Pradesh. I couldn't eat the Pahadi food in Mumbai much because the climate doesn't support that. So when I returned, I ate all those things that I couldn't in Mumbai like Siddu, ghee, other milk products and Pahadi cuisine.' She adds, 'The day I came back, my dadi made bedmi roti for me. When I went to my village, I was treated with a dish called Poldu, then my nani fed me daal chawal. Every place that I visited, I was greeted with traditional ghar ka khana and I enjoyed it to the fullest.' Pratibha was most happy about getting to share her success with her family at their own home. 'When I sat with them and saw them enjoying my success, it motivated me to do more. But when I go home, I don't get any special treatment, I am their daughter only, and I like that,' she gushes. Being away from home and family can take a toll on a person mentally, but for Pratibha, it was her family's constant support that kept her sane and strong. 'When your family's support is with you, you don't feel that distance and I have been blessed to get that support from my family. When you live in a big city like Mumbai, some low moments are inevitable, but you have to tell yourself that you have chosen this lifestyle for yourself and you have to brave them through. You have to focus on the good things in your life, cherish them and then celebrate it with your family. Thus it took me this long to return and this was the best vacation of my life,' she insists.

Curry quarrel: Police reunite couple at ‘war'

Nagpur: In a heart-warming intervention, Nagpur police turned Cupid to reunite a distressed couple, preventing a potential tragedy in Mhalgi Nagar on July 5. An argument over the taste of curry led the couple, Pratibha and Rohit Madavi, to take drastic steps. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The incident unfolded when officers spotted Pratibha wandering aimlessly with her baby girl near Mhalgi Nagar at night. The cops, who were engaged in rescuing roadside wanderers under 'Operation Mukti', decided to intervene and take her to the police station. Pratibha, originally from Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh, struggled to provide details about her Nagpur residence, posing a challenge for the officers. Under the leadership of senior inspector Dnyaneshwar Bhedodkar of Hudkeshwar Police Station, the team drove her through various localities, determined to locate her home. Upon reaching Pipla Phata, Pratibha could recall the road towards her makeshift labour camp where she stayed with her husband. The cops went inside the house and were shocked to find a suicide note penned by her husband, Rohit, who was also untraceable. Rohit, a construction labourer, migrated to Nagpur a few months earlier. He summoned Pratibha a few days ago, and they stayed in a makeshift labour camp at Pipla Phata. The couple's argument erupted when Rohit disapproved of the curry Pratibha prepared. Enraged, both left their home on separate paths, with Pratibha wandering aimlessly and Rohit contemplating a tragic step. Rohit left home after borrowing a neighbour's cellphone. He requested the neighbour to alert him if Pratibha returned while contemplating ending his life by suicide. The cops called Rohit on the cellphone and summoned him back. Senior PI Bhedodkar and his team's timely efforts not only averted a tragedy but also restored harmony between the couple. "We had to counsel the couple and urged them to stay together happily for the sake of the child," said Bhedodkar. The couple, now reunited, expressed gratitude to the police for their sensitivity and commitment, proving that even small disputes can be resolved with care and understanding.
