Drop gates to be set up at 20 spots to prevent entry, exit of criminals: IG

1 2 3 South Chotanagpur zone inspector general Manoj Koushik has joined the office recently following a major reshuffle in the police administration. Among the major issues in districts under his jurisdiction are cybercrime, extremism, drug peddling and organized crime. He talks to TOI's Sanjay Sahay about the plans and measures for overall crime control. Excerpts... What measures are underway to eliminate extremism from South Chotanagpur which includes a Maoist hotbed in West Singhbhum district? Chaibasa (West Singhbhum), where top Maoist leaders are hiding, is the only core area of the rebels in the state. State police and CRPF are conducting joint operations to sanitize the area. In some districts like Ranchi, Khunti, Loharadga and Gumla, the splinter groups of Maoists have a presence but their activities have dwindled considerably. The active groups are mainly criminals using the name of the rebels to extort money. Most of these anti-social elements are identified and actions are being taken against them. I also request people to inform the police if there are extortion calls from organised crime groups. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Azioni Italia fino a 2€ BG SAXO Scopri di più Undo Cybercrime is on the rise. What steps police have taken to curb it? Awareness is necessary to save citizens from falling victim to cybercriminals. The elderly, who are soft targets of such criminals, should be also focused. I have instructed Ranchi police to improve their achievement against cybercriminals with the help of the Pratibimb app. Directions have been issued for registration of cases as soon as they are reported and for immediate action. We will also try to take financial institutions on board for the speedy recovery of money cheated from the victims. What steps will be taken to address the public grievances? In my meeting with Ranchi police recently, I instructed them to ensure speedy disposal of public complaints lodged with the centralized public grievance redressal and monitoring system. This system will be on vigil in other districts, too. We are planning to give a copy of the inquiry report to the complainants if it does not involve confidential information. The citizens will have the option of disputing the report at higher levels. What are your instructions to prevent crime in the state capital? I have asked the police personnel to identify entry and exit points of Ranchi city and build infrastructure so that it could be sealed immediately when a crime is committed. So far, around 20 spots have been selected in this regard. We will set up drop gates at these places. The step will also enable regular checking, which will prevent inter-district and inter-state movement of smugglers and other criminal groups. Haryana Police arrest man for posing as Army officer, duping people

The cybercrime police in Haryana's Nuh on Sunday arrested a man who allegedly posed as an Army officer and duped people. The police identified the accused as Mohammad Zahid, a resident of Tayra village in Rajasthan's Deeg district. Officials said he was arrested after the cyber team tracked a suspicious mobile number active on the Pratibimb portal that was previously linked to a Rs 9,000 fraud in Kerala's Kannur. The Pratibimb portal, launched last year, has details of SIM and IMEI numbers of suspected fraudsters, plotted in real time. A team led by Inspector Vimal, in charge of Nuh Cyber Police Station, caught Zahid near ITI Maroda. After a search, three smartphones, six SIM cards, fake social media profiles, counterfeit Army photos, fraudulent QR code UPI IDs, and evidence of suspicious transactions via digital payment apps were found, the police said. Interrogations revealed that Zahid allegedly used WhatsApp, posing as an Army officer with fake profiles, to deceive victims. A case has been registered against him, and the police are investigating whether he operated alone or with others. 'So far, we have not found any involvement from other people, but the investigation is ongoing. He is currently in judicial custody. We will have to see if there are other complaints across states,' Vimal said. 'Online fraud cases like these will face continuous action through technical surveillance,' he added. A Nuh police spokesperson said that the Pratibimb portal has proved effective in helping them nab criminals, and that they have zero tolerance for such fraud cases. Last March, the district police had arrested around 30 people in cybercrime cases with the help of the Pratibimb portal, and that operation resulted in the seizure of 50 mobile phones and 90 fake SIM cards. During the special operation conducted over two days, the police had raided various locations. The accused had engaged in online fraud by using fake documents to purchase online items, creating fake social media profiles, fake bank accounts, sextortion, enticing people with lucrative ads for purchasing animals, and advertisements for making pencils, among other methods.
