Dooley leveller means share of spoils for Douglas and Kanturk
Premier SHC: Douglas: 0-21 Kanturk: 2-15 A draw wasn't what either side wanted after opening day defeats in the Cork Premier SHC, but in the end it was Douglas more thankful for a point after it took a late Ronan Dooley score to level matters in Castletownroche. Losses two weeks ago meant neither team had room for error and it showed in the first half in a nervy display where both teams struggled to gain a foothold. Douglas did lead by a point at half-time having played with a strong wind, but they looked in trouble when Kanturk banged in two quick goals to lead by four points in the closing stages. The city team showed character though with Cork senior hurler Shane Kingston playing an influential role in the comeback. It did look like they ran out of time, but four minutes into added time, Dooley popped up with a point from close range. Douglas, despite having a strong wind with them in the opening 30 minutes, were slow out of the blocks. A Colin Walsh point after 70 seconds got Kanturk up and running before the same player had a goal opportunity four minutes in after being set up by Lorcan O'Neill, but his effort didn't have enough power to beat Douglas goalkeeper Donal Maher. Quick-fire points from Shane Kingston and Conor O'Donovan were well worked scores for Douglas. But it was a scrappy opening with both teams guilty of some poor shooting. Picture: Howard Crowdy With the stakes high, both teams didn't get a consistent run going here, though Kanturk did land three of the next four points with Colin Walsh pointing and also having a say in the other scores, 0-4 to 0-3 to the Duhallow team after 15 minutes. The sides traded points in what was a first half short of quality even if the wind was causing havoc. Kanturk continued to shade it approaching the interval as they led 0-7 to 0-6 with two minutes to the break, but points from Joseph Harte and Shane Kingston (free) gave the city outfit a slender 0-8 to 0-7 half-time advantage. Wind-assisted Kanturk started the new half sluggishly with Douglas' Ronan Dooley splitting the posts. They possibly could have been further, but it didn't happen as Alan Walsh raised a white flag to leave the bare minimum in it. The teams swapped points as neither team could gain a foothold, 0-10 to 0-9 after 38 minutes. A Brian O'Sullivan boomer did tie up matters. No surprise that the sides shared the next four points, 0-12 each with a quarter of the game left. A minute later in a rare goal chance, Conor Kingston's goal-bound effort deflected out for a 65 which Shane Kingston converted. Douglas continued to have their noses in front, 0-15 to 0-14 until Kanturk grabbed the bull by the horns. The excellent Brian O'Sullivan goaled after 51 minutes after Colin Walsh played a key role and despite Douglas sub Daniel Harte landing his second point, the Duhallow team got their second goal seven minutes from time when Rory Shehan billowed the back of the net, 2-14 to 0-16. Three successive Douglas points from them a point behind that man Shane Kingston pointed to level the game a minute from time. A difficult free was converted by Sheahan edged Kanturk ahead and had chances to push further ahead. With time up, Dooley stepped up to rescue Douglas and make sure there was a share of the spoils. Cork Premier SHC: Ruthless Imokilly rack up 2-32 against Avondhu
Cork Premier SHC Divisions/Colleges semi-final: Imokilly 2-32 Avondhu 1-17 By the time the first Avondhu attempt had sailed between the posts, Imokilly were already five points to the good at Church Road. By the time the second did, they were seven clear. This was as straightforward as the scoreline suggests. Fifteen shots in the first half returned 13 white flags. Avondhu, with the aid of the breeze, had eight wides and two scores from play to show for their efforts in their Cork PSHC Divisions/Colleges section semi-final on Saturday. In typical candystripe fashion, Denis Ring's men were out of sight before Avondhu had even landed a punch. Another four unanswered scores on the restart left Imokilly 12 up with 25 minutes to play, and still 2-14 to be tacked on. Avondhu did improve, though they couldn't fare much worse. Solely for the unrelenting efforts of Stephen Condon and James Keating. Those two and Brian Lombard got on the scoresheet to leave it 1-23 to 0-10 at the end of the third quarter, while Condon and Keating added two more to leave 14 points between the teams with 15 to play. Mike Kelly – who was on fire in the second half – responded to Condon and Keating's efforts with one of his six scores from play. Avondhu had a couple of half chances at goal. Both from Condon. The first ended prematurely, Condon denied advantage just as he had broken through on goal, with referee Simon Stokes calling it back for the free. He slipped through again 10 minutes later, this time denied smartly by Ciarán O'Brien, who blocked his effort. Avondhu did eventually get that breakthrough, after 61 minutes. A clever one-two between Condon and Keating saw the latter rifle a beauty into the top corner. But that consolation was mercilessly wiped out, as Joe Stack set up substitute Oisín Fitzgerald for a second Imokilly major in the 64th minute. Kelly and Jack Leahy had been scoring for fun up until additional time – leaving Imokilly 1-31 to 0-16 clear before Keating hit the net. It was a woeful opening period for the north Cork side. They couldn't hold onto any of their restarts, and when they did, any attempts at picking out a forward up front were fruitless. Their distribution was subpar, and they scrapped the use of Liam Cronin as a sweeper after 19 minutes. A substitution followed four minutes after. By that stage Imokilly were 0-12 to 0-4 in front. They were eight ahead still at the break. When the first green flag came for the east Cork outfit, it was after 42 minutes, and was a gift from Avondhu. Cronin had done well to win possession and he handpassed it short to goalkeeper Daniel O'Connell, but his stick pass was straight to Diarmuid Healy, who unleashed a low strike into the gaping net. At that stage it was 1-21 to 0-9. All too easy for the reigning county champions. Strong second half showing sees Muskerry into Premier SHC Divisional/Colleges semis
Cork Premier SHC Divisional/Colleges quarter-final: Muskerry 3-16 Carbery 0-15 A strong second half display saw Muskerry advance to the Divisional/Colleges seeded section of the Co-Op SuperStores Cork Premier SHC at the expense of Carbery at Ovens on Tuesday evening. Diarmuid Kirwan's team will now meet UCC in the last four of the seeded section. There were only three points in it at half-time, with the eventual winners having their noses in front before they pushed on after the break in what was an impressive team performance in the second period. In a sluggish start, Muskerry did start positively with a goal after just 30 seconds when David Casey finished beautifully to the back of the net following a driving run. The sides traded early points in a game dominated by poor shooting. Liam Hourihane hit a great point for Carbery as they trailed by two points after eight minutes but a Shane Tarrant effort did settle Muskerry after a nervy start. A pair of Caolan O'Donovan points, one from a free, left Carbery a point adrift, but they were too reliant on him to get scores throughout. Muskerry put together three unanswered white flags with Mark O'Connell's effort the pick of the scores, 1-5 to 0-4 after 20 minutes. Carbery then scored three points on the trot of their own with O'Donovan slotting over two frees and a Shane Crowley effort. Muskerry did get the last two scores of the half through Adam Dinan and Tarrant, 1-7 to 0-7 at half-time. Picture: Jim Coughlan O'Donovan was excellent for Carbery, very accurate from frees, as he landed another placed ball, 1-11 to 0-9 with 20 minutes remaining. Muskerry though were playing all the hurling as they were starting to show their quality. They hit two of the next three white flags before scoring two goals in the space of 50 seconds to put the game to bed. Bradley and Casey scoring the goals, with the first one eye catching after James Lane gave a great ball to the Aghabullogue marksman, 3-13 to 0-10 after 46 minutes. To Carbery's credit, they kept going right to the end as the players represented their clubs and division proudly. They landed five of the last eight points as they finished the game strongly even if the encounter had long slipped away from them. Paudie Crowley and Ciarán Dullea with two excellent scores for the West Cork outfit. It is the end of the road for them this year though as Muskerry march on.
