Former Orioles minor leaguer Chase Childers dies while saving swimmers
July 18 (UPI) -- Former Baltimore Orioles prospect and police officer Chase Childers, 38, died after helping to rescue swimmers in Pawleys Island, S.C., officials announced. He was 38. "The Cobb County Police Department is mourning the loss of one of our own, former officer Chase Childers, who lost his life this past weekend in South Carolina while selflessly saving others from a rip current," the Cobb County Police Department said Thursday. Pawley's Island police said they received a call at about 4:45 p.m. EDT Sunday with reports of multiple swimmers in distress near Shell Road. A person was reported missing, and police and Midway Fire Rescue started a search, assisted by the Coast Guard. Childers was recovered at about 6:15 p.m. Sunday. Police said his drowning was the fifth in the area over the last 26 months. "The victim, Chase Childers, and another person entered the water to help 4-5 individuals who were in distress," Pawley's Island police said. "Sadly, Mr. Childers was caught in the rip current, as well. He died trying to save others." Childers played at North Cobb Christian High School in Kennesaw, Ga., before going to Georgia State University. Childers joined the Orioles minor league ranks in 2009. The former second baseman and shortstop prospect hit .195 with six doubles, two triples, six steals and 17 RBIs over 50 Rookie League appearances. Childers is survived by his wife, Nataley, and three children, Barrett, Brooks and Bella. A GoFundMe page set up for the Childers family had raised more than $163,000 as of Friday afternoon. "Chase was a truly selfless individual, always prioritizing the safety of others above his own," the Childers family said in a statement. "Without hesitation, he would leap into action whenever someone was in need, ready to tackle any challenge that came his way. "To his family and all who knew him, he will forever be remembered as a hero." Kate Beckinsale mourns death of mom Judy Loe: 'My dearest friend'
July 18 (UPI) -- Kate Beckinsale is mourning the death of her mother, actress Judy Loe, whom she described as "the compass of my life, the love of my life, my dearest friend." Loe died Tuesday, Beckinsale wrote on social media. An official cause of death was not shared, although Beckinsale said in July 2024 that her mom had stage 4 cancer. "I don't want to post this. I am only posting this because I have had to register my mother's death certificate and it will soon become public record," she wrote on Instagram Thursday night. "She died the night of July 15 in my arms after immeasurable suffering. I have not picked all the best photos, not the best videos, because I cannot bear to go through my camera roll yet." The photo carousel included an image of Loe in a pale yellow cardigan, smiling into the camera, and an image of her when she was younger, strutting across the street with an owl on her shoulder. Beckinsale also included a photograph of her mother smiling while sitting next to a fox on a couch. "I deeply apologize to any of her friends who are finding out this way or through the press, but I cannot go through her phone. I am paralyzed. Jude was the compass of my life, the love of my life, my dearest friend. The vastness and huge heart of this tiny woman has touched so many people who love her dearly," she said. "She has been brave in so many ways, forgiving sometimes too much, believing in the ultimate good in people and the world is so dim without her that it is nearly impossible to bear. Mama, I love you so much. This has been my greatest fear since finding my father dead at five and I am here. Oh my Mama... I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. I am so sorry." Her father, actor Richard Beckinsale, died from a heart attack at age 31 in 1979. Ex-Texans, Eagles linebacker Bryan Braman, 38, dies after cancer battle
Former NFL linebacker Bryan Braman (L) appeared in 97 games over his seven-year NFL career. File Photo by Jim Bryant/UPI | License Photo July 17 (UPI) -- Former Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Bryan Braman has died, his agent confirmed Thursday. Braman, 38, had been battling cancer. Braman was diagnosed in February. A GoFundMe page set up for Braman said he underwent several surgeries to treat a rare, aggressive form of cancer. The page also said that he had trouble recovering from his procedures due to his lowered immunity, and that the cancer was growing around his vital organs. "Bryan is home with his family after undergoing a CAR-T cell reprogramming treatment program in Seattle," the page said in a June update. "With the cancer that Bryan has, which is a very rare form of cancer, the CAR-T treatment had the highest chance of success as the cells are reprogrammed to fight this cancer that is within Bryan. His cells did re-infuse themselves, and did in fact start reproducing within his bone marrow. "At first, the mass did start to shrink, but then the cancer started fighting back." Braman's GoFundMe page had a goal of $25,000, but was up to more than $88,400 as of Thursday morning. Several of his former teammates, including J.J. Watt and Chris Long, made donations. "Rest in peace brother," Watt wrote Thursday on Instagram and X. "Gone far too soon." Braman played at Idaho, Long Beach Community College and West Texas A&M before entering the league as an undrafted free agent signing by the Texans in 2011. He joined the Eagles in 2014. Mostly a special teams specialist, Braman totaled 56 combined tackles over 97 career appearances. He also made seven postseason appearances, including three during the Eagles' Super Bowl-winning run in 2017-18. Agent Sean Stellato, who confirmed Braman's death, said he is survived by two daughters, ages 11 and 8. Norwegian Olympian Audun Groenvold, 49, dies from lightning strike
July 16 (UPI) -- Norwegian skier Audun Groenvold, a bronze medalist at the 2020 Winter Olympics, was struck by lightning and died, the Norwegian Ski Federation said Wednesday. He was 49. The federation said the incident occurred while Groenvold was on a cabin trip. He was taken to a hospital and treated for his injuries, but died Tuesday night. "Norwegian skiing has lost a prominent figure, who has meant so much to both the alpine and freestyle communities," federation president Tove Moe Dyrhaug said in a statement. "Audun had a great career in both alpine skiing and ski cross, before becoming the national ski cross coach. "The Norwegian Ski Association also remembers his efforts on the ski board. There will be a big void after Audun." Groenvold earned his gold medal in ski cross at the Winter Olympics on Feb. 21, 2010, in West Vancouver. He was a national alpine skier from 1993 to 2003. He later won a bronze medal in ski cross at the World Championships and the ski cross cup in 2007, in addition to his bronze medal.
