Project Pink Alert launched in Kolkata: Empowering youth for a cancer-aware future

In a significant step towards creating a cancer-aware generation, the Institute of Breast Disease, Kolkata, in collaboration with the Asian Medical Foundation, launched Project Pink Alert—a youth-focused cancer awareness initiative—at Presidency University. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The project was unveiled during a dynamic three-hour workshop held at the PCM Auditorium, engaging over 100 students from the university's Department of Mathematics. The interactive session focused on key areas, including cancer prevention, early detection, lifestyle risk factors, and debunking myths, aiming to equip young people with life-saving knowledge. This marks a new chapter for an initiative that previously reached over 1.8 lakh school students across 1,800 schools nationwide. With its latest expansion, Project Pink Alert seeks to engage college and university students as cancer awareness ambassadors within their communities. 'India's biggest challenge is not the lack of treatment facilities, but the late detection of cancer,' said Dr. Soumen Das, Director of the Institute of Breast Disease. 'With Project Pink Alert, we are planting the seed of awareness among today's youth, so they become informed, proactive, and responsible citizens.' India faces a mounting cancer burden, with one in every 22 women at lifetime risk for breast cancer. Over 70% of cancers in India are detected at advanced stages (Stage III or IV), significantly reducing treatment success rates. Project Pink Alert aims to change this narrative by promoting timely detection and reducing avoidable deaths. The launch event featured engaging talks by key medical professionals, including Dr. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Kanad Basu (project lead), Dr. Tanmoy K. Mandal, Dr. Sayantan Mukhopadhyay, and Dr. Anowar Ali Mallick. A vibrant Q&A session followed, during which students asked thoughtful questions about genetics, symptoms, and societal stigmas. The team extended their gratitude to Professor Avishek Adhikari and the Presidency University faculty for their support, as well as to Sanjoy Chatterjee, Chairman of the NASSCOM Regional Council, for his continued encouragement. Following its successful kickoff, Project Pink Alert is poised to expand across colleges and universities in multiple states, with an ambitious goal to reach 1 million students in the next two years.

Boipara gets water jitters early, sellers rush to save stocks with sheets & raised platforms

1 2 Kolkata: As rain lashed the city on Thursday, well before the official onset of the monsoon season, booksellers in Kolkata's College Street, also known as Boipara, scrambled to protect their stock. Plastic sheets went up like emergency canopies, bricks were stacked to raise platforms, and waterproof wraps were hurriedly pulled over piles of books. Many book traders also started wrapping the books properly before shutting shop, fearing overnight downpour and flooding with the meteorological department predicting more rain ahead. Not just that, shelves are being rearranged so that valuable stock moves to higher shelves. This time, rain pain arrived early for the vendors at the book hub. "We usually try to protect ourselves from the scorching heat while doing business during this time of the year, not fight the rain," said Pratap Das, secretary of the Sir Ashutosh Booksellers' Association. "We have instructed all the traders to move the stock to safety if it rains more intensely," he added. At College Street, where over a total of 1,500 bookstores, street stalls, and vendors operate in a crisscross of narrow lanes flanked by institutions like Presidency University, Calcutta University, and the Sanskrit College and University, the book trade is more than just business — it's a way of life. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like CFD: Invertir $100 con IA podría devolverte un segundo salario Digital Group Prueba ahora Undo But it's also highly vulnerable to the vagaries of weather, especially prone to flooding. Water gushes into shops and stalls whenever it rains heavily. "I've already shifted my reference books to the top shelf," said Rajib Sardar, who has been selling law books for over two decades. "Last time, a chunk of my stock got damaged due to flooding," he recalled. Cyclone Amphan left Boipara battered — torn covers, soggy textbooks, and waterlogged basements filled with books turned to pulp. "This sudden downpour has brought back bad memories," said Nilanjan Biswas of the College Street Book Stalls Owners' Welfare Association. Traders on College Street want the administration to ramp up civic infrastructure in the area.

Parents of alumnus give Presi 16L as 2nd tranche for gym, smart classes

1 2 Kolkata: The parents of a Presidency University alumnus, Rajarshi Bhattacharya , who died while pursuing his PhD at IISC Bangalore, donated Rs 16 lakh to Presidency for its gymnasium and upgradation of the lecture theatre for chemistry department into a smart classroom . In 2023, Rajarshi's parents donated Rs 7 lakh to the chemistry department to buy a spectrometer after reading a TOI article on the lack of funds plaguing several departments, including chemistry. The parents, who requested anonymity, have already handed over Rs 16 lakh to the university, out of which Rs 6 lakh were spent on buying fitness equipment for the gymnasium, and Rs 10 lakh will be utilised for renovating the chemistry lecture theatre. Both these facilities will be named after Rajarshi. "I visited the chemistry department during the Rajarshi Bhattacharya Memorial Lecture and saw that the lecture theatre is not in good shape. There is no podium to deliver lectures. Looking back at the legacy, I felt bad and decided to donate the money for ramping up its infrastructure for teaching and learning. I got in touch with the university authorities and proposed my idea. They welcomed my proposal and told me that the amount can be split and utilised for buying fitness equipment for the gymnasium and upgrading of the lecture theatre," the 76-year-old father said. The retired central govt employee opted for making this donation with a desire that his son would be remembered forever. Moreover, the university was close to his son's heart— a reason that prompted him to take up such an initiative. "A well-equipped gymnasium was a long-standing demand of the students, which has been fulfilled by the kind support of Rajarshi's parents," said dean of students, Arun Maiti. The chemistry department has also submitted its requirement for instruments such as an audio podium, amplifier, interactive panel, wireless mic, and gooseneck mic, to the authorities. Sources said renovation and upgradation of the chemistry lecture theatre will begin shortly. "The smart classroom can also be used to conduct international seminars and talks. This facility will also be the first-of-its-kind in the university. The fund that will be left after the upgradation will be utilised for ramping up facilities for other classrooms," head of the chemistry department, Arnab Halder said. Rajarshi graduated in chemistry in 2016 from the Presidency University. Professors remember Rajarshi as a "meticulous, intelligent, interactive, and ardent lover of the subject." He completed his Masters from Rajabazar Science College, Calcutta University, in 2018 and got admitted to IISC Bangalore as a PhD scholar in the organic chemistry department.

Presidency University in Bengaluru showcases innovation in design education

The School of Design at Presidency University, Bengaluru, recently hosted its Experiential Week — a platform for students to present their academic and creative work across disciplines. Over 250 students from the Bachelor of Design and Multimedia programmes participated in the event, which offered a curated exhibition of over 300 projects, including product prototypes, system designs, fashion collections, multimedia installations, and visual narratives. Work from all four years of study was represented, providing a comprehensive view of the developmental arc of student learning — from foundational exploration to advanced conceptual execution. The format of the event encouraged students not only to display their work but also to explain their design processes, receive constructive critique, and engage in meaningful dialogue with faculty, visiting professionals, parents, and peers. Experiential Week extended beyond static displays. A series of workshops and talks facilitated knowledge-sharing and skill development. Highlights included a seminar on Innovation Clusters led by Carlos and Sugat Das from IED Milan, which addressed collaborative design ecosystems and their potential in the Indian context. The week concluded with a curated runway-style showcase featuring design collections from eight emerging fashion designers.
