‘Excuse me': Brooke Shields unleashes on ‘precious' Meghan Markle after ‘rude' encounter on South by Southwest panel

Model and actress Brooke Shields has spoken out about the viral moment she dared to interrupt Meghan Markle during an awkward onstage encounter. The Duchess of Sussex and the Blue Lagoon star were both tapped to sit on a panel marking International Woman's Day at the prestigious South by Southwest Festival last year. During the appearance, Markle referenced the time she wrote a letter to Procter and Gamble as a child asking them to gender-neutralise a dishwashing soap commercial. The story has been repeated multiple times, including during Meghan Markle's Vanity Fair cover story she negotiated after she began dating Prince Harry. In a twist, Vanity Fair later deleted the anecdote from their piece after the magazine's fact checkers were unable to substantiate Markle's version of events. Shields, 60, opened up about her decision to cut off Markle's favourite story during a podcast interview hosted by King Charles' goddaughter India Hicks. 'Meghan said, 'I didn't think only women wash dishes,'' Shields recalled. 'It wasn't fair. So I wrote to the company. And when I was 11, I wrote my first letter and when I was 11...' and she kept saying she was 11!" The entertainment industry veteran sensed that Markle's oft-repeated story about writing letters to a detergent company was hardly riveting for the audience. "It was just too precious," Shields explained to as to why she decided to chime in. "And I was like, they're not going to want to sit here for 45 minutes and listen to anybody be precious or serious.' The Endless Love star explained that she did not intend to be 'rude' to the ex-working royal but wanted to lighten the mood after Markle's earnest story. "Excuse me, I'm so sorry. I've got to interrupt you there for one minute,' she said. "I was trying not to be rude, but I wanted to be funny because it was so serious. "I just want to give everybody here a context as to how we're different," she told the crowd.' The actress then pointed out to Markle how when she was the same age she was playing a prostitute - referring to her controversial role in the 1978 film, Pretty Baby - which drew immediate laughter from the audience. "The place went insane. And then luckily, it was more relaxed after that," Shields said.

Brooke Shields at 60: Her 10 Favorite Roles and Why She'll Never Forget Them

Beautiful Brooke Shields was in show business before she could walk or talk — her mother Teri got her a gig at 11 months old as a model for Ivory Snow. Since then, she's starred in countless film and television projects, making her a household name. Here are Brooke's 10 favorite roles and what the 60-year-old says they mean to her. 'After Pretty Baby, there was such a firestorm … pitchforks and protests. I always used to say, 'I wonder if I were to play a murderer, would critics be really worried that I was uncomfortable stabbing somebody?'' Brooke was just 14 years old in the controversial film with partial nudity. 'Never again will a movie be made like that. It wouldn't be allowed.' 'Suddenly Susan was a revelation. I used to think I would only be credible if I was a 'thespian.' As I got older, I realized I don't enjoy it. I only enjoy comedy.' The actress thought nothing of modeling for the provocative jeans campaign. 'I was naive. It didn't come into my sort of psyche as them being anything overtly sexual. I was a virgin!' Starring as Sally Bowles in the classic production on the Great White Way, she says, 'Broadway welcomed me when nobody else was welcoming me.' Director Franco Zeffirelli would pinch her toes in order to get a certain reaction from her. 'He wanted some look of ecstasy on my face. And, my first reaction was, how about directing? Here's an idea.' On playing a movie executive juggling career and family, 'I'm a lot like Wendy in my passion. It was the most like me of anyone I'd ever played. I'm a perfectionist like she is. But I never feel like I'm doing enough.' 'I think a lot of the movies I made could have been better. But then again, I'd also have to say that it didn't matter. I wanted to be liked more than I was worried about delivering a master performance.' The Hallmark movie and its two sequels 'harkens back to that exact time when I used to watch Charlie's Angels, Jimmy Rockford or Magnum, P.I. And I wanted to do something that my kids could watch. Laughing with them is one of the purest joys I have.' On her recurring TV role: 'I revert to being a little kid whenever I get a job. I just get so excited that I'm getting a chance to do what I love again. I walk in with the 'Oh, my god, I'm here' feeling. I just feel so excited that I get invited to the party again.'

Ne-Yo reveals the number one rule his four girlfriends live by in his ‘pyramid' relationship

Ne-Yo has revealed what it's like having four Miss Independents in his life and what his number one rule is. The R&B star, known for hits like 'Closer', 'Sexy Love' and 'So Sick', surprised fans after introducing his four girlfriends on social media earlier this year. It turns out that the 45-year-old has been pursuing the polyamorous life since divorcing Crystal Renay in 2023. And his four partners, Cristina ('Pretty Baby'), Arielle ('Twin Flame'), Moneii ('Phoenix Feather'), and Bri ('Sexy Lil' Somethin') are part of his 'pyramid' schedule. "On this tour, I'll let this one come out for seven days, then she go home. This one come out for seven days and then this one. And then we do something all together. It's a beautiful thing," he previously explained on the REAL 92.3 station. The four women, Ne-Yo says, all willingly follow one rule because they agreed not to 'lie to each other'. "What I say goes... and you can't date other men," he said on The Angie Martinez Show. "When I got with these women, I did not ask for their exclusivity. I did not demand their exclusivity. "They asked for it. They came to me and said, 'I want to be exclusive to you and just you'. "I said, 'You understand that your exclusivity to me, does not mean my exclusivity to you? You understand this, yes? You're OK with it?'" The musician from Arkansas insisted the key is that they are 100 per cent honest with each other. "The main rule is to just keep it a buck. We're not gonna lie," Ne-Yo - whose real name is Shaffer Chimere Smith - explained. "We're not gonna lie to each other. We're not gonna sit up here and blow smoke. I ain't selling no dreams, and I'm not forcing anybody to be here. "If for whatever reason you decide this isn't for you anymore, the door is never locked. "You have permission to go on about your business. I don't want anybody to think that I'm manipulating these women into doing something they don't want to do." Ne-Yo is a father of seven and he says balancing parenting responsibilities is his biggest challenge. The singer shares three children with his ex-wife Renay, two with his ex-fiancée, reality star Monyetta Shaw-Carter, and two others with influencer Sade Jenea Bagnerise. "One of the major challenges is time, because I don't have a lot of free time, I have seven beautiful children," he added. "I have a career that is still moving like it's 2005, in this thing, I move around a lot, so I don't have a lot of free time, and everybody needs their own individual time."

People Are Calling Eiza González 'Insensitive' After She Wore An Outfit Inspired By 'The Blue Lagoon' For An Interview With Brooke Shields

Baby Driver star Eiza González is being called out after a recent appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show with Brooke Shields, and the whole thing is making me cringe. This week, Brooke was one of a few celebrities to fill in for Kelly on her talk show in the American Idol 's star's recent absence. As a guest host, Brooke spoke to actor Eiza González, and the conversation — while generally well received — featured one awkward moment that had viewers stirring in comment sections online. As the two sat down, Eiza gestured to her outfit, which consisted of a turtleneck and a blue tulle skirt. 'By the way, I wore this for you,' she said before asking Brooke, 'What does it look like?' After slightly hesitating, Brooke answered. 'My… outfit in Blue Lagoon,' she guessed. Eiza excitedly confirmed, smoothing down her skirt and saying, 'Yes! It's like a Blue Lagoon -inspired look for you.' 'Oh my gosh, that was a lot more covered than I was,' Brooke said as she pointed to Eiza's outfit. Eiza nodded, saying, 'I couldn't live up to the hair, so I was like, 'Well, I'll use fake tulle as hair.'' 'And that hair was… taped to my body, by the way,' Brooke shared, to Eiza's surprise. 'Yeah, they had to tape it to my boobs, because if the wind blew, it was like, woo!' The two laughed as Brooke said, 'There wasn't much! There wasn't much there.' If you aren't familiar with the 1980 film The Blue Lagoon, you might not know the many controversies surrounding the movie and Brooke's experience as its lead star. In addition to its controversial plot about two young cousins falling in love, the film has been widely criticized for its excessive nudity — particularly because Brooke was only 14 years old at the time. Of course, this film wasn't the only controversial experience in Brooke's earlier career. At just 11 years old, she starred in the 1978 film Pretty Baby, playing a child prostitute. Like The Blue Lagoon, the film featured several nude scenes and was banned in a number of locations upon release. In the decades since, Brooke has opened up about her traumatic childhood and has been vocal about her mistreatment and sexualization by the adults at that time — most notably in her documentary, Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, which came out in 2023. In the two-part documentary, Brooke talks about her experiences making movies, including Pretty Baby and The Blue Lagoon, and it's pretty clear that she doesn't recall them all that fondly. In light of this, when Eiza wore her new look on The Kelly Clarkson Show, viewers had a lot to say. 'I feel that's quite insensitive of her picking that outfit,' one person wrote. Another added, ''I'm dressed as you when you were exploited' is a choice.' One person highlighted Brooke's perspective, commenting, 'I wore this for yoooou just a lil something that symbolizes your trauma 😜.' 'The way I would never bring up blue lagoon to that woman,' someone else said. 'You can see it I her eyes the trauma flashback just came over her 😭,' a third person added. Others, however, were more diplomatic towards Eiza. One person said, 'I know her intentions were good, but that probably reminded [Brooke] of all her child acting drama.' Someone else agreed, adding, 'I would feel too bad to do it.' Another user suggested that Eiza may simply be unaware, saying, 'I never knew how she felt about that movie, maybe she didn't either. I don't believe she would do that intentionally if she had known.'
