'Gone full rainbow': Canadian intelligence agency celebrates pride in online post; draws mixed reactions

Canadian intelligence agency celebrates pride in online post; draws mixed reactions The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) found itself the target of online trolling following its tweet on Pride month celebrations earlier this summer. The controversy stemmed from a tweet posted by @csiscanada that highlighted the agency's commemoration of Pride Season, featuring performances by Two-Spirit hoop dancer Makhena Ranken Guerin, comedian Ava Val, and public servant David Da Silva. CSIS had posted on its official X handle 'Back in June, CSIS launched its #PrideSeason celebrations with a few guest speakers. Thanks to the talented Two-spirit hoop dancer Makhena Ranken Guerin, the hilarious Canadian comedienne Ava Val, and inspirational public servant David Da Silva...' — csiscanada (@csiscanada) The post quickly sparked an outpouring of critical remarks online. Some commentators seized on the juxtaposition of a national security agency engaging in Pride celebrations, ridiculing the blend of intelligence work with performative inclusivity. Some social-media users mockingly reacted that CSIS had 'gone full rainbow'. Others said such initiatives risked trivializing the gravity of national security concerns. Observers noted that the intelligence agency had been increasingly active on social media platforms, engaging publicly and actively sharing cultural moments.

Travelling with Pride: A 2SLGBTQI+ Canadian's Guide to Safe Adventures

OTTAWA, ON, June 11, 2025 /CNW/ - As you pack your bags to join the global Pride celebrations in 2025, be sure to equip yourself with knowledge about the countries you'll visit, so that your adventures are as safe and enjoyable as possible. It's important to keep in mind that laws, cultural norms, and social customs regarding sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC) can differ dramatically from what we experience in Canada. Take some time to get to know your destination. A great place to start is the Government of Canada's Travel Advice and Advisories. Keep in mind that in some countries, same-sex relationships are illegal, or 2SLGBTQI+ people might face legal challenges tied to things like public morals or vagrancy laws. More research to understand what you might encounter during your travels is always good idea, like the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association's map of sexual orientation laws in the world which provides valuable insights into the legal landscape for 2SLGBTQI+ people worldwide. And don't forget to sign up for the Registration of Canadians Abroad service. It's a handy way to stay in touch with the Canadian government in case something unexpected happens, like civil unrest, while you're travelling. In addition to understanding the laws, it's crucial to consider your personal safety. Be aware of your online presence and how your social media accounts or dating apps might be viewed by authorities in countries where discrimination against the 2SLGBTQI+ community is widespread. Always be cautious of public displays of affection, as some regions might be hostile to such gestures. Stay informed and vigilant about local customs and avoid putting yourself at risk. For those traveling with children or considering adoption or surrogacy abroad, be aware that some countries may not recognize 2SLGBTQI+ family structures or may have discriminatory policies. Researching adoption laws and ensuring proper documentation for your children can help you avoid unnecessary complications. Most importantly, remember that consular services are available to assist you while abroad. Contact the nearest Canadian government office at your destination or the 24/7 Emergency Watch and Response Centre in Ottawa for consular help while you are outside Canada. Should you face any challenges, the Canadian government can offer support to help ensure your safety and rights are upheld. OTTAWA, ON, /CNW/ - Pride Season is a time to raise our voices—and our flags—to celebrate the strength, resilience, and contributions of Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and other sexual and gender diverse (2SLGBTQI+) communities. It is also a time to recommit to building a country where everyone can live in safety and dignity. Today, as the Intersex-Inclusive Pride Flag was raised on Parliament Hill, the Honourable Rechie Valdez, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Secretary of State (Small Business and Tourism), announced $1.5 million to support the security needs of Pride festivals across Canada. This funding—administered by Fierté Canada Pride through Canada's Action Plan on Combatting Hate—will help cover the rising cost of safety and insurance planning, so organizers can continue building welcoming and inclusive spaces for all. As we begin Pride Season, the Government of Canada remains committed to working with 2SLGBTQI+ communities to build a future where no one is left behind. Quote "Everyone deserves to feel safe and supported in their community. That starts with action—and with empowerment. Standing with 2SLGBTQI+ communities means building a Canada where everyone can live authentically and thrive. Today's funding matters. It strengthens local efforts to protect and uplift 2SLGBTQI+ communities and helps ensure Pride events across the country are safe, inclusive, and joyful for all." Quick facts As part of Canada's Action Plan on Combatting Hate, an investment of $15 million was committed to combat hate towards 2SLGBTQI+ communities. WAGE's public awareness campaign Unity addresses the stigma faced by members of 2SLGBTQI+ communities. It encourages Canadians to come together and play an active role in reducing that stigma by increasing the knowledge and skills needed to create a more inclusive future for all.
