Finalists for the Pride of Cumbria Awards 2025 Community Group of the Year category
The Pride of Cumbria Awards 2025 Community Group of the Year category will recognise a group that has come together in the community, a group who exemplifies what can be achieved when people work together for the greater good making their community a better or safer place to live. The event will be held on Wednesday, June 18 at the Greenhill Hotel, Wigton, hosted by StagedRight managing director David McNeill. Workington Town Community Trust Workington Town Community Trust (Image: Supplied) The Workington Town Community Trust has been running for eight months. Since their formation they have completed 13 HAF camps and six holiday camps, as well as starting a new initiative with adults with additional needs that will run for four hours a week for 40 to improve well being and increase activity levels. The nominator said: "Workington Town Community Trust listens to what the local children, young people and adults want and work hard to make things happen. The team is small and dedicated. "They deliver activities in a fun enthusiastic manner which improve engagement levels. They are a very inclusive group and want to make a difference to the future of people's lives." Love Barrow Families Dads' Group Love Barrow Families Dads' Group (Image: Supplied) Dean McSkimmings leads the Love Barrow Families Dads' Group each week, in an open, accessible and friendly way. The nominator said: "I would like to nominate Love Barrow Families Dads' Group for Community Group of the Year in recognition of the exceptional support they provide to our local community. "What truly makes the Dads' Group stand out is their unique ability to unite men who may otherwise feel isolated, giving them the opportunity to work together on meaningful projects while also offering a supportive network." Workington Storm RLFC Jayden Blair (Image: Supplied) Workington Storm RLFC, founded by 17-year-old Jayden Blair, has made an incredible impact on the West Cumbria community by establishing the region's first-ever disability rugby league team. The nominator said: "The overwhelmingly positive response to the club has highlighted the demand for such initiatives, and Jayden's vision continues to evolve, with discussions already underway about forming a pub team for additional social activities like pool and darts. "His leadership, dedication, and community-driven spirit make Workington Storm RLFC a deserving recipient of the Community Group of the Year award."

The Pride of Cumbria Awards 2025 NHS Worker of the Year recognises heroes from the NHS who have gone above and beyond. The award, which is sponsored by NRL, is set to highlight those who 'show bravery, courage and resilience in their day-to-day work, demonstrated by outstanding acts of kindness and compassion to families and patients'. The Pride of Cumbria Awards 2025 will be held on Wednesday, June 18 at the Greenhill Hotel, Wigton. Sylvie Booth Sylvie Booth (Image: Supplied) Orthoptist Sylvie works within the North Cumbria Integrated Care Trust, going 'above and beyond under very challenging working conditions'. Her nominator said: "The gift of sight through the services Sylvie provides, gives those with sight impairment or changes in sight following events like stroke, is life changing in terms of individual safety, sense of self worth, ability to access rehab (e.g. learning to read or walk again), returning to work and living a quality and meaningful life. "Sylvie very much deserves to be recognised for this." Laura Street Laura Street (Image: Supplied) Laura works as the improvement lead for cancer at the North Cumbria Integrated Care Trust, and is said to have an 'unwavering dedication' to her role. Her nominator said: "Laura has been fundamental to some massive improvements in Cancer care at North Cumbria this year, and she is exceptionally dedicated to ensuring that every patient gets timely, efficient and compassionate care on their cancer journey. "Laura shows tremendous resilience, courage and compassion to patients and their families, and is unwaveringly dedicate to ensuring that the local population has access to the best cancer care possible." Valerie Coltart Valerie Coltart (Image: Supplied) Valerie works as an NHS dietician at the Cumberland Infirmary being nominated by the parent of one of her patients for 'always going the extra mile' in her work. Her nominator said: "Valerie comes for home visits when my child is having a bad day so he doesn't miss an appointment, she also organises if there is a slip up with his feeds and medication and she will bring things to us if needed on her way home from collecting her own children, she is the nicest person too, and deserves to be recognised."

Pride of Cumbria Against all Odds award finalists share inspiring stories of courage
The new Against All Odds category in Newsquest's Pride of Cumbria Awards 2025 honours individuals or groups who have overcome personal challenges with resilience, determination, and courage. Their journey through illness, loss, or adversity inspires others, showcasing the strength of hope and perseverance. The event will be held on Wednesday, June 18 at the Greenhill Hotel, Wigton, and will be hosted for the first time by StagedRight managing director David Stewart Kerry Stewart (Image: Supplied) Kerry was diagnosed with breast cancer in Feb 2021, aged 30. She is a mother of Mabel and a wife to Jonathon. Fit, healthy, full of life and one day found a lump in her breast. She was diagnosed and put onto a treatment plan instantly. She braved the shave in July 2021 and started raising money, alongside Stronger Together cancer support group, to raise funds for The Henderson and Loweswater Suite at West Cumberland Hospital. Laura Earl - The Hiking Household Laura Earl (Image: Supplied) Laura was diagnosed with a brain tumour in September 2023, she was fit and active - owning walking business The Hiking Household. She has four young kids and has dedicated her life to me, the children and her business. Her nominator said: "She deserves this award as her whole life was dedicated to walking and being outside and this last year has been incredibly difficult for her. "She has overcome all the odds and used her experience for good, making routes more accessible for others now she's disabled herself." Sarah Foster Sarah Foster (Image: Supplied) Sarah was first diagnosed with cancer around the age of 12. She has had multiple remissions but the cancer always returned. She has the most valiant spirit and determination to fight and she's fought hard. She has raised a staggering amount for charity including CLIC Sargent and cancer research. Her nominator said: "For outstanding bravery and contribution to charity whilst being disabled and having terminal cancer herself." Julieanne Mitchell Julieanne Mitchell (Image: Supplied) Julieanne is HIV positive and is 47 and lives in Whitehaven, she works for Blue Sky Trust one day a week and also does additional volunteering for this service. Her nominator said: "Julieanne herself was diagnosed with HIV over 20+ years ago, at a time when she was a young women, since then, she has worked so hard to build herself back up after such a diagnoses, but then she has also gone on and support others living with HIV across Cumbria"
