Emma Thompson claims she could have 'changed the world' if she'd dated Donald Trump
Oscar-winning actress, Emma Thompson, claimed she received an unexpected invitation from Donald Trump while on set for the 1998 political satire Primary Colours Emma Thomson reckons she could have "changed the course of American history" if she had accepted Donald Trump's offer of a date 27 years ago. The Oscar-winning actress, 66, left fans gobsmacked when she revealed that the US President, 79, invited her to dinner while she was on set for the 1998 political satire, Primary Colours. Joking that The Apprentice star had 'stalked' her after he got her phone number, Emma told an audience at the Locarno Festival in Switzerland: "I could have gone on a date with Donald Trump, and then I would have a story to tell. I could have changed the course of American history.' It comes after the actress admitted she'd cheekily asked Prince William for a kiss when she received her damehood. "I didn't know the number of the phone. No one had rung me on it before, and I said, 'Hello.' 'Hi, this is Donald Trump here,' and I thought it was a joke. And then I said, 'How can I help you?,' thinking maybe he needed directions." The Sense and Sensibility star said that Trump replied by saying, "I'd love you to come and stay at one of my beautiful places. Maybe we could have dinner" to which she responded, "Well, that's very sweet. Thank you so much. I'll get back to you." At the time, Trump had just split from his second wife, Marla Maples. Emma meanwhile, had just finalised her divorce from Kenneth Branagh. Only later did she twig the timing. 'I realised my divorce decree had come through that day,' she said on Saturday. 'I bet he's got people looking for a nice divorcee to take out on his arm. 'And he found the number in my trailer,' she joked. 'I mean, that's stalking.' Emma is full of juicy stories and once revealed she asked Prince William for a kiss back in 2021. The iconic actress has had several memorable encounters with the future king over the years, including being asked to be a presenter at the first annual Earthshot Prize Awards, and a hilarious video call between the unlikely pals. But arguably the most unforgettable moment they shared happened in 2018, when the actress was invited to Buckingham Palace to receive her damehood for her outstanding contribution to the arts and entertainment. Reflecting on the moment while on the press tour for her 2021 film Cruella, Emma revealed that she asked William for a kiss. Speaking via a video link, she joked about her ballsy request to Prince William, who has a knack for forging friendships with A-list film stars, as he handed over her award. Emma explained: "Prince William was absolutely fantastic. I wrote him a fan letter afterwards. His face and body language, so kind and generous to every single person. I've known him since he was little really. I've always liked him. "I couldn't believe how tall he'd got. I did say, 'I suppose I better not kiss you' and he said, 'Probably better not.' I asked him about him and he said, 'Will you please stop talking about me, it's about you.' What a nice man."

Emma Thompson reveals she turned down a dinner date with Donald Trump: ‘I'll get back to you'
Emma Thompson has no love, actually, for Donald Trump. The British actress, 66, has revealed that she once turned down the current US president's advances back in the 1998 when he directly phoned her to asked her out on a date. 'He said, 'Hello, this is Donald Trump,'' she told the audience at Locarno film festival in Switzerland over the weekend, as reported by the Guardian. 'I thought it was a joke and asked: 'How can I help you?' Maybe he needed directions from someone.' 'Then he said, 'I'd love you to come and stay at one of my beautiful places. Maybe we could have dinner.' I said, 'Well, that's very sweet. Thank you so much. I'll get back to you.'' Thompson was filming the political satire Primary Colours at the time – a film reportedly based on Bill Clinton's presidential rise – and Trump had just split from his second wife, Marla Maples. Likewise, the Love Actually star was fresh from her divorce from British actor Kenneth Branagh, whose divorce was coincidentally finalised the day Trump, now 79, asked her out. 'I realised my divorce decree had come through that day,' Thompson told the crowd at the event. 'And I bet he's got people looking for suitable people he could take out on his arm. You know, a nice divorcee, that's what he was looking for.' 'And he found the number in my trailer. I mean, that's stalking,' she jokingly added. At the time, Thompson was already in a relationship with her Sense and Sensibility co-star Greg Wise, who she went on to marry in 2003. Trump, of course, went on meet Melania Trump later in 1998 and they were married in 2005. He became the 45th US president in 2017 before again being voted into the top job last year. Thompson – a lifelong Labour supporter and activist in the UK, who campaigned for refugees and women's rights – joked that she could have impacted the life and political choices of Trump if she didn't turn him down. 'I could have gone on a date with Donald Trump, and then I would have a story to tell,' she said, entertaining a 'sliding doors' moment. 'I could have changed the course of American history.'

Emma Thompson reveals Donald Trump asked her out on a date on the day she got divorced
has revealed that Donald Trump asked her out on a date on the same day she got divorced. The actress, 66, said the President of the US, 79, asked her out for dinner as soon as her marriage to fellow British actor Kenneth Branagh was officially over. Speaking at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland on Saturday, Dame Emma described how she was in her trailer while filming Primary Colours, a 1998 film inspired by Bill Clinton 's rise to the White House, when her phone rang. The award-winning actress said Trump was on the line and initially she thought it was a joke, the Telegraph reported. She said: 'It was Donald Trump. He said: "Hello, this is Donald Trump." I thought it was a joke and asked: "How can I help you?" Maybe he needed directions from someone. 'Then he said: "I'd love you to come and stay at one of my beautiful places. Maybe we could have dinner." 'I said: "Well, that's very sweet. Thank you so much. I'll get back to you".' The surprising phone call came after the president has separated from his second wife, Marla Maples, with whom he shares Tiffany Trump. At the time, the 47th US President had yet to set his sights on politics and was instead focusing on expanding his New York real estate empire. In contrast, the Harry Potter actress had announced her split from Branagh in 1995 and had begun a relationship with her co-star Greg Wise, whom she later married, after meeting on the set of Sense and Sensibility. The revelation came during a Q&A about her career at the star-studded film festival, where Dame Emma joked that had she gone on a date with the Republican politician, she may have changed the course of American history. She also suggested that she was chosen by his team as a suitable person to be seen in public dating. She added: 'I bet he's got people looking for suitable people he could take out on his arm. You know, a nice divorcee, that's what he was looking for.' The star, who is a staunch member of the Labour party and even supported Jeremy Corbyn's leadership and bid for Prime Minister in 2019, added: 'I could have changed the course of American history.' The festival gave Dame Emma Leopard Club Award for career achievements. Dame Emma has always been an outspoken political activist and last year led thousands of people on a march in London aimed at persuading politicians to prioritise nature and climate. More than 350 charities, businesses and direct action groups were taking part in the Restore Nature Now march, along with Dame Emma, businessman Dale Vince and naturalists Chris Packham and Steve Backshall.
