Zahid: Sejahtera Madani initiative combats urban poverty, raises RM127mil

PUTRAJAYA: The Sejahtera Madani initiative is a comprehensive anti-poverty programme that goes beyond conventional financial aid by also addressing the growing challenge of urban poverty, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He said the programme, coordinated by the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) under the Prime Minister's Department, has successfully collected RM127 million in contributions, surpassing its original target. "This initiative does not only involve financial assistance but also contributions in the form of goods, services and training. It is a commendable effort that complements existing government programmes for poverty eradication. "The focus is also on urban poverty. We need to eradicate urban poverty. This is a good method, but we must follow through with consistent actions," he said to reporters after the Sejahtera Madani programme launch today. Zahid added that coordination and monitoring by both government and non-government stakeholders are crucial to ensuring lasting results. "While addressing poverty, we must not just give fish; we must provide the fishing rod. With that rod, people can catch their own fish. "This means that this is a long-term programme which will also be monitored by the private sector and government-linked companies, which is a good action," he said. Earlier today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim launched the Sejahtera Madani programme. The Sejahtera Madani Programme is a national initiative coordinated by the ICU, Prime Minister's Department (ICU JPM) to assist poor and hardcore poor households registered in the eKasih system. The programme consolidates various forms of assistance across ministries, agencies and the private sector to reduce poverty in a targeted and integrated manner. Anchored in a "whole-of-nation approach", it is strengthened with additional elements focusing on high-impact and sustainable assistance to households in eKasih, through four key initiatives: income generation, education, housing and welfare.

Sejahtera Madani gets RM120mil boost from private sector, surpassing expectations

PUTRAJAYA: The Sejahtera Madani programme has achieved a significant milestone, securing RM120 million in contributions from private sector entities — an impressive testament to their shared commitment to eradicating hardcore poverty in Malaysia. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim hailed the response as exceptional, surpassing the initial RM50 million target, and a strong reflection of the private sector's confidence in the government's focused efforts to uplift vulnerable communities. "I had said that receiving RM50 million would already be commendable, and the government could top it up slightly. But the response has not just doubled — it has far exceeded expectations. "I do feel quite moved by this, and I apologise. I am only human, and sometimes emotions surface, even though some may be uncomfortable with that. But I believe in this initiative, and we have now raised nearly RM120 million," he said at the Sejahtera Madani launch today. The Sejahtera Madani programme, coordinated by the Implementation Coordination Unit under the Prime Minister's Department (ICU JPM), is a national initiative aimed at supporting poor and hardcore poor households registered in the eKasih system. The programme brings together various forms of assistance from ministries, government agencies, and the private sector in a targeted and integrated manner to combat poverty. Based on a "whole-of-nation" approach, it includes four key pillars: income generation, education, housing, and welfare — focusing on sustainable and high-impact interventions. Anwar also highlighted the Sekolah Angkat Madani (Madani Adopted Schools) initiative, which has expanded from 200 to 1,000 schools thanks to private sector support. "We want to move this country forward — to become strong and respected. And to achieve that, we must begin with leadership rooted in good governance, accountability, and zero tolerance for corruption and abuse of power. "But our efforts will not succeed without the strength of the private sector — businesses that are now expanding into international markets in Egypt, Italy, France, Peru, and Brazil. This is a credit to the strength of our private enterprises. "Our role is to support and empower them, and when we succeed — driven by the spirit of our professional workforce — we return part of that success to the people so they may share in its rewards," he said. Anwar added that with Sejahtera Madani, alongside the commitment of the government, private sector, religious councils, and zakat funds, hardcore poverty could be addressed more effectively. "This isn't a new concept — some companies already employ locals from nearby communities. The presence of a CEO or president alone can offer confidence and hope to local youths, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Such engagement inspires and gives students a sense of possibility. Even more so if we can also provide them with basic facilities," he said. He also urged ministries to foster closer collaboration with private sector players. "There's no need to dwell on divisions over race, religion, regions, or states. This is our shared challenge — as one national family. Let's not undo the progress we've made. Let's work on this together," he said. As of July 15, a total of 306,403 heads of households were registered in the eKasih system, comprising 1,017 classified as hardcore poor and 305,386 as poor. The government remains resolute in its commitment to eradicate hardcore poverty and aims to reduce overall poverty by 33 per cent this year.

Sejahtera Madani initiative surpassed its target with RM120mil raised, says PM Anwar

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed his gratitude as a total of RM120mil was collected under the newly launched Sejahtera Madani initiative, aimed at eradicating hardcore poverty in the country. Anwar, who also serves as the Finance Minister, reaffirmed the government's commitment to ending hardcore poverty with the help of all parties, including the private sector. "I initially said if we get RM50mil, that is enough; the government can help a little. "However, the support has been overwhelming. Although not everyone is happy with the initiative, so far we have managed to collect RM120mil," he said after launching the Sejahtera Madani 2025 initiative at the Seri Perdana Complex on Thursday (July 24). The launch was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The Sejahtera Madani is a national initiative coordinated by the Implementation Coordination Unit of the Prime Minister's Department (ICU JPM) to assist poor and hardcore poor households registered in the eKasih system, according to a statement from the Prime Minister's Department. This programme combines various forms of assistance from ministries, government agencies, and the private sector to address poverty in a focused and integrated manner. Guided by a "whole of nation approach," the programme emphasises high-impact and sustainable programs or assistance for Heads of Households and Household Members registered under eKasih. The initiative focuses on four key areas: income generation, education, housing, and welfare. Anwar mentioned that the government had initially targeted 200 schools for adoption but received offers for 1,000 schools so far. "I don't think this is an easy feat that can be achieved by many countries in terms of strong collaboration between the government and the corporate sector," said Anwar. The Prime Minister also stated that the government's mission to end hardcore poverty is achievable due to support from diverse backgrounds. "It is within our means. Based on the figures in 2023 and 2024, we can do it, although the numbers will be there. But it is way lower compared to before," he said. The fund, in the form of corporate social responsibility (CSR) contributions for Sejahtera Madani, will be channeled directly into the People's Well-being Fund under the supervision of ICU Prime Minister's Department, said the Prime Minister's Department. "All CSR contributions are eligible for income tax deductions under Subsection 44(6) of the Income Tax Act 1967, as approved by the Finance Ministry." As of July 15, a total of 306,403 Heads of Households have been recorded in the eKasih system nationwide, consisting of 1,017 classified as hardcore poor and 305,386 as poor, said the Prime Minister's Department. "The government remains committed to eradicating hardcore poverty and is aiming for a 33% reduction in poverty this year. The ceremony not only serves to express the government's appreciation for the CSR contributions from strategic partners, but also to honor 16 selected eKasih Heads of Households from across the country, who were specially invited to the event to receive aid from the Government," it said. All aid provided to the targeted groups is tailored to their specific needs to help increase household income and uplift their standard of living, it explained.
