CBS Sports includes 8 Lions in Top 100 players of 2025 list
A list released Tuesday includes eight Detroit Lions among the best 100 players in the NFL entering the 2025-26 season. CBS Sports senior NFL columnist Pete Prisco's NFL Top 100 players of 2025 list is headlined by star players at the top including Patrick Mahomes at No. 1 and Saquon Barkley at No. 3. The first Lions player doesn't appear until outside the top 10. Advertisement Lions superstar edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson slots in at No. 15 coming off of last season's injury that put a halt to his Defensive Player of the Year campaign. To his credit, Prisco ranked Hutchinson No. 47 before the start of last season. Hutchinson fell below other top pass rushers on this year's list including Myles Garrett (No. 2), Micah Parsons (No. 10), and T.J. Watt (No. 11). He's just a few spots ahead of Chris Jones (No. 18) and Trey Hendrickson (No. 26). The next Lion ranked is right tackle Penei Sewell at No. 21. Prisco acknowledged in his list that Sewell is in the conversation for best right tackle in the NFL, but did have him ranked at No. 17 in last season's list. The only right tackle ranked ahead of Sewell is longtime Eagles O-lineman Lane Johnson (No. 12). Advertisement A couple more scrolls down this list is running back Jahmyr Gibbs at No. 32. Gibbs had a stellar 2024-25 season while splitting time with David Montgomery and is expected to build on that this season. Prisco didn't have Gibbs ranked ahead of last season. He only trails Barkley at No. 3 and Derrick Henry at No. 14 on this year's list. The gap at this point in the list is a bit jarring, getting all the way outside the top 50 before getting to wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown at No. 58. St. Brown finished second in the NFL in catches last season and was ranked No. 39 on Prisco's list entering last season. St. Brown surprisingly fell behind several other receivers on this list including Brian Thomas Jr. (No. 44) and Malik Nabers (No. 45). Even sitting a spot behind Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield at No. 57 seems like a stretch. Advertisement The list lumps the Lions' talented safety duo fairly close together at this point in the list with Kerby Joseph at No. 60 and Brian Branch at No. 65. Neither of them were ranked on Prisco's list last season, but they were one of the bright spots on a struggling defensive unit by the time the playoffs rolled around. Quarterback Jared Goff comes in at No. 77 after having the best year of his career last season. He moved down only one spot from last season's list. He's several spots below peers like Jalen Hurts (No. 52) and Mayfield (No. 57), but is sitting well ahead of Dak Prescott (No. 90) and Jordan Love (No. 92). The last Lion on this list is tight end Sam LaPorta at No. 86. It's a steep drop from his spot on last season's list (No. 58), but his numbers did see a steep decline compared to his rookie season. Still, LaPorta is ranked ahead of Travis Kelce (No. 96) and is one of only five tight ends included in the top 100. You can see Prisco's full list here. See which Texans players cracked CBS Sports' top-100 player list
See which Texans players cracked CBS Sports' top-100 player list The 2025 NFL season is quickly approaching (in a few months), which means everyone is beginning to take a hard look at the state of the league, which teams are filled with standout players and who could have the biggest impact on the year's outcome. CBS Sports' Pete Prisco ranked his top 100 players heading into the 2025 season. Four Houston Texans made the list, with two landing inside the top 50 and one inside the top 25. All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. was ranked the highest at No. 23 and No. 2 ranked defensive back, trailing only Denver Broncos star and reigning Defensive Player of the Year Patrick Surtain II. Last season, Prisco rated Stingley at No. 80 overall. New York Jets All-Pro Sauce Gardner, who was selected after Stingley, came in at No. 24. "Stingley Jr. has emerged as one of the best cover players in the league after a so-so rookie season in 2022, which is why the Texans rewarded him with a big extension," Prisco wrote. "He had five interceptions in 2024." Not only did Stingley finish top five in interceptions, but he also posted 18 pass breakups (second most) and allowed the second-lowest completion percentage among cornerbacks with at least 200 coverage snaps (46.7%), according to NFL Next Gen Stats. His performance led to a new three-year, $90 million extension this offseason, making him the highest-paid cornerback in the league with an annual $30 million salary. Defensive end Danielle Hunter joined Stingley inside the top 50 after a promising first season with the Texans, coming in at No. 47. The native Houstonian wasn't the top name on the Texans' defensive line, but his consistency and pressure rate allowed Will Anderson Jr. to go untouched in most instances en route to a breakout second season. "Hunter had 12 sacks in his first season with the Texans, giving him three straight double-digit sack seasons and five straight in seasons where he's played at least 16 games," Prisco wrote. "He is a force off the edge, teaming with Will Anderson Jr. to give the Texans a nice combo." Anderson, who totaled a team-leading 13.5 sacks and 19 tackles for loss, cracked the top 60 at No. 56. His lethal speed and hand usage makes him one of the rising stars entering a pivotal year ahead of contract negotiations. "In his second season, Anderson Jr. had 13.5 sacks for the Texans," wrote Prisco. "He pairs with Danielle Hunter to give Houston one of the best edge-rushing duos in the league." Even after missing five games, Nico Collins made the list at No. 67. Among receivers, Prisco listed him as the No. 9 pass-catcher entering this fall, but it has more to do with his time off the field than on it. Even in 12 games, he averaged over 14 yards per catch and finished with over 1,000 receiving yards for the second straight season. "Bothered by injuries, Collins played in just 12 games last season as the Texans offense took a step back," Prisco wrote. "When he was on the field, he was still a big-play threat with 68 catches and seven touchdowns. He averaged 14.8 per catch, which was down from the year before." Oddly enough, neither quarterback C.J. Stroud nor running back Joe Mixon made the list despite their statistical accomplishments in 2024 and predicted consistency heading into the season. Prisco ranked 11 other quarterbacks and eight other running backs, which should give you an indication of where the Texans' backfield could rank in his eyes. The Texans open the regular season on the road against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium on Sept. 7.

See which Rams players cracked CBS Sports' top-100 player list
The 2025 NFL season is quickly approaching (in a few months), which means everyone is beginning to take a hard look at the state of the league, the teams and which players will have the biggest impact on the year. CBS Sports' Pete Prisco ranked his top 100 players heading into the 2025. Three Rams made the list, but all three finished outside the top-50: Edge rusher Jared Verse (No. 54), wide receiver Puka Nacua (No. 63) and wide receiver Davante Adams (No. 91). Advertisement Verse, as a rookie in 2024, wasn't ranked. Nacua moved up three spots, though, while Adams dropped 65 spots from being Prisco's No. 26 player a year ago. Oddly enough, neither quarterback Matthew Stafford nor running back Kyren Williams made the list despite their statistical accomplishments in 2024 and predicted ability heading into the season. Prisco ranked 11 other quarterbacks and eight other running backs, which should give you and indication of where Stafford and Williams could rank in his eyes. Here's what Prisco had to say about all three Rams players on his list. No. 54 Jared Verse "Verse had 4.5 sacks as a rookie, but the pressure numbers show how dominant he can be as an edger player. He did rack up a lot of them on his way to winning Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. He's also good in the run game. This could be his breakout sack season." No. 63 Puka Nacua "He was limited to 12 games because of injury, yet Nacua still managed to catch 79 passes with three touchdowns. That number was down from the 105 he had as a rookie, but he did average more catches per game." No. 91 Davante Adams "Adams turns 33 in December, so age is starting to become a factor. He was never a burner, so that's a concern. But the Rams offense would seem to be perfect for how he plays. Playing for the Raiders and Jets, he still had 85 catches and eight touchdown receptions." CBS analyst says Aaron Rodgers heading to Steelers 'makes all the sense in the world'
CBS analyst says Aaron Rodgers heading to Steelers 'makes all the sense in the world' Everyone has an opinion on whether or not the Steelers should trust Aaron Rodgers to carry their team in 2025 — but one CBS Sports analyst thinks the move "makes all the sense in the world." CBS Sports' Peter Prisco argued that while the news should've been made official a long time ago, the move was a great one: "Look, [Aaron] Rodgers does things on his own timetable. He's going to get in there before the start of [mandatory] minicamp — which is the smart thing to do. He can spend a month and a half learning the offense, and he'll be just fine. I'm not worried about that," Prisco said. "By the way, Rodgers played well in the second part of the season last year. In the final seven games, he threw 13 TD passes and four picks. He finished the season with 28 [TDs] — tying Josh Allen. That's more than Patrick Mahomes. That's more than Jayden Daniels. That's more than Justin Herbert. It's more than a lot of quarterbacks last year. Pittsburgh, desperate to get a quarterback — they found their guy — one-year deal. It makes all the sense in the world." Former Steeler turned CBS analyst Bryant McFadden agreed with everything Prisco said, but argued the most annoying part of the situation was the "waiting game" — a sentiment most fans would agree with. Rodgers will look to prove Prisco and McFadden right in their assessment in 2025 — and potentially make history in his Steelers debut season.
