Tennis-U.S. Open announces record $90 million prize money
NEW YORK (Reuters) -The U.S. Open announced $90 million in prize money will be on offer at this year's final major, marking the largest purse in tennis history, up 20% from 2024. Top players in the ATP and WTA called for more equitable distribution of revenue at the four Grand Slams this year, as those at the top of the game are able to benefit from increased prize money while players at the lower levels often struggle. The U.S. Open prize pool is up from $75 million in 2024, the previous highest-ever purse. Men's and women's singles winners will earn $5 million each, up from $3.6 million last year. The tournament will also see double-digit percentage increases across all rounds in all events, after "years of a strategic focus on redistribution to the early rounds and qualifying tournament," organisers said. Singles action at the U.S. Open has been expanded to 15 days, amid booming attendance, and will take place from August 24 to September 7. A new format in the mixed doubles is being introduced this year, with the event featuring many big-name singles players as it will be taking place over two days in the week before the main competition kicks off at Flushing Meadows. U.S. Open attendance topped one million fans for the first time in 2024. (Reporting by Amy Tennery in New York, editing by Pritha Sarkar)

Cricket-Italy qualify for T20 World Cup for first time
(Reuters) -Italy may have fumbled their way out of the last two soccer World Cup qualifying campaigns but their cricket counterparts smashed their way into uncharted territory by booking a maiden Twenty20 World Cup berth on Friday. The cricketing minnows sealed qualification for the first time ever, sneaking through the European qualifiers despite losing their final match against the Netherlands in a result that suited both teams perfectly. Italy needed only to avoid a heavy defeat to secure their historic spot thanks to a superior net run rate and that is exactly what unfolded. Setting a modest target of 135 for victory, they watched the Dutch cruise home in 16.2 overs, a margin narrow enough to send both teams through to the 2026 tournament. Scotland, veterans of six previous T20 World Cup editions, were the big losers, failing to secure their spot for the 20-team tournament, losing to Jersey who chased down 134 in a last-ball victory. But Scotland also needed Italy to win. The 2026 tournament will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka, with five additional qualification spots still up for grabs from Africa and the Asia-East Asian Pacific regions. TEAMS QUALIFIED FOR 2026 T20 WORLD CUP Sri Lanka (co-hosts), India (co-hosts), Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, South Africa, United States, West Indies, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, Canada, the Netherlands, Italy. Soccer-Sevilla fans storm training ground after 3-2 defeat at Celta Vigo
(Reuters) -A group Sevilla fans stormed the club's training complex following their 3-2 defeat at Celta Vigo on Saturday, tearing down an access gate as tensions escalated, with the loss leaving the team just two places clear of the drop zone in LaLiga. The seven-times Europa League champions are 16th with 38 points from 35 games, well off the European places. After Sevilla suffered their 15th defeat of the season at the Estadio Balaidos, hundreds of fans gathered outside the club's facilities, waiting for the players to return in a show of anger. While the police and the club's security team contained the attempted breach, local reports have said the team will remain at the training ground overnight to avoid the enraged crowd. Reuters contacted Sevilla for comment. Sevilla are set to resume training on Sunday ahead of hosting relegation-threatened Las Palmas on Tuesday.
