The French Derby winner injured his leg when finishing fourth to Delacroix in last month's Coral-Eclipse. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Prix Du Jockey Club winner Camille Pissarro has been retired with immediate effect Credit: AFP The news comes as it was confirmed O'Brien's multiple Group 2 winner Diego Velazquez would be retired at the end of the season. Three-year-old colt Camille Pissarro was entered for October's Arc de Triomphe, where he was a 33-1 chance. His career ends with three wins from 11 runs and more than £1.1million in prize money. According to a post on X from the Racing Post, Camille Pissarro suffered a hairline fracture to his fetlock, which is a bit like a horse's ankle. He was beaten just two-and-a-half lengths by Delacroix, who nutted Ombudsman in an all-time Sandown thriller. Those two will lock horns again in next Wednesday's blockbuster Juddmonte at York. Jockey Christophe Soumillon reported after the Coral-Eclipse that Camille Pissarro had hung left-handed on the run-in. While a vet confirmed afterwards that the colt had lost his left-fore shoe. A Group 1 winner of the Jean-Luc Lagardere last season, Camille Pissarro, a son of Wootton Bassett, returned from a 174-day break to finish a half-length second to Big Gossey at the Curragh in March. He then went down just other a length to stablemate Henri Matisse when finishing third in the French 2000 Guineas in two months later. He proved he was good enough to mix at the top table again though when showing a rapid turn of foot to claim the £700,000 first-place prize in the French Derby over 1m2f on June 1. O'Brien, who has seen two big-name horses removed from his yard in recent days, said after that win: "I'm delighted for everyone. "Ryan (Moore, jockey) gave Camille Pissarro an incredible ride. "Christophe was delighted with him the last day and told us to come here with him, and what a ride Ryan gave him. "He's a very classy horse. He was obviously a Group 1 winner on Arc day last year. "It was a great run in the French 2,000 Guineas last time behind Henri Matisse, so to come back and do this is incredible. "It's a difficult race to win because you need a horse with a lot of speed, and they have to get a mile and a quarter, but it's a very important race and it makes him a very important horse now." Ryan Moore shines on Camille Pissarro in French Derby as Croix du Nord confirms star status
Ryan Moore showed his class once again as Camille Pissarro got the gaps in the nick of time to win the Group One Prix Du Jockey Club (2,000m) at Chantilly on Sunday. The $3.4 favourite was always prominent in the box seat under Moore but as the field began to sprint in the home straight, he was stuck behind a wall of horses. Camille Pissarro was forced to sit and suffer, but Moore kept the revs up on the Wootton Bassett galloper and when Bowmark began to weaken on the rail, the 41-year-old needed no second invitation. The pair quickened up smartly into the lead between horses at the 200m pole and gained a winning break, fending off late challenges from Andre Fabre's Cualificar and the John and Thady Gosden-trained Detain in the final strides. Camille Pissarro wins the 2025 Prix du Jockey Club! 🏆🇫🇷 — At The Races (@AtTheRaces) June 1, 2025 Christophe Soumillon, who rode third-placed Detain, won on Camille Pissarro in the Group One Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (1,800m) last season and Moore – perhaps tongue-in-cheek – gave the French star credit after Sunday's success. 'The race went very smoothly. I had a good draw [barrier one], the pace wasn't crazy, but the horse was very relaxed,' said Moore. 'When I asked him, he responded well. Christophe Soumillon taught me how to ride him!' And trainer O'Brien followed suit, with the French Derby distance seemingly a masterstroke by Soumillon. 'After the Emirates Poule d'Essai des Poulains, when Christophe Soumillon got off the horse, he immediately told us to run him in the Jockey Club,' said O'Brien. 'He's a miler … but he stays 2,000m, and that's exactly what you need to win the French Derby. He's a colt we've always really liked.' Meanwhile, Croix du Nord bounced back from defeat in the Group One Satsuki Sho (2,000m) and confirmed his lofty reputation with a sparkling performance to win the Group One Tokyo Yushun (2,400m). Ho O Atman made sure the Japanese Derby was a test, zipping out to a 10-length lead, with Yuichi Kitamura stalking the pace in the main group on $2.4 favourite Croix du Nord. As the field turned in, Kitamura made his move and when he asked the Japan Racing Association's Best Two-Year-Old Colt for 2024 for maximum effort, he responded by charging to the lead at the 300m. Both Masquerade Ball and Shohei finished fast, but neither were ever going quick enough to land a glove on the next Japanese superstar, with Kitamura heaping praise on his partner. 'I felt it was my responsibility to make Croix du Nord a Derby winner ever since the colt won the Hopeful Stakes, so my feeling now is that I am relieved to have accomplished by mission,' said Kitamura. 'The colt felt great today and I was able to come into the race with every confidence, so victory itself came as no surprise to me. 'The break was smooth and after that, I was concentrating on keeping him in a comfortable rhythm more so than what position he was sitting in. In the stretch run, he responded really well and as I've said, I had every confidence in the colt and drove him on believing that he would make it to the wire a winner.'

‘Best in the world' – Aidan O'Brien horse smashed for the Derby after ‘ridiculous' Ryan Moore ride
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) AIDAN O'BRIEN saw one of his squad of superstars smashed for the Derby after Ryan Moore pulled off a 'ridiculous' winning ride. The softly-spoken jockey was branded 'best in the world' by punters after steering Mount Kilimanjaro to a breathtaking victory at Chester. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up Sent off the evens money favourite from stall five, Moore looked content to sit at the back and bide his time on the Coolmore-owned colt. Oisin Murphy on 11-4 High Stock and Tom Marquand on 25-1 Great David blazed a trail in front. And they looked to have stolen a march on Mount Kilimanjaro as Moore got lower and lower in the saddle. Those who took the short price about the fav will have had a few nervy moments as it looked like he wasn't picking up. He hit 5-1 in-running as it appeared he wasn't finding much at all despite Moore's urgings. But in truth it turned out to be an expertly-judged ride by O'Brien's right-hand man. He swept round the outside late and the writing was on the wall a furlong out. Breezing home, Mount Kilimanjaro went onto win by a neck officially but it was a cosy success. So, will the Derby be next? Well, bookies Betfair and Paddy Power cut him to 20-1 from 33s for the Epsom showpiece. Moore didn't sound too keen on going to Epsom afterwards and the French Derby - the Prix Du Jockey Club - has previously been mentioned as a target. Wherever he ends up, though, this was really all about another Moore masterclass. Punters absolutely lapped up his brilliance, with one commenting: "Ryan Moore is the best jockey in the world, no one comes close. "That's ridiculous on Mount Kilimanjaro." Another said: "Just watched a masterful and beautifully executed ride by Ryan Moore in the Dee Stakes at Chester. A sublime professional." While a third posted on X: "Ryan Moore a cheat code for Chester, ridiculous."
