Punjab Kings' batter Priyansh Arya scripts massive milestone in IPL 2025 final

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 3 (ANI): Punjab Kings' young sensation Priyansh Arya shattered Devdutt Padikkal's record for the most runs by an uncapped Indian batter in a debut Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Priyansh came out to open for Punjab in the final of the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the world's largest cricket stadium, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. In pursuit of Bengaluru's daunting 191-run target, Priyansh provided a quick-fire start and struck 24 from 19 deliveries, laced with four boundaries. He finished the season with a tally of 475 runs from 17 appearances at 27.94. The 24-year-old surpassed Padikkal's tally of 473 for most runs by an uncapped Indian batter in the debut IPL season. It took a stunner from Phil Salt at the edge of the boundary rope off Josh Hazlewood on the final delivery of the fifth over. He tried to flick the ball away for a maximum, but his attempt was intercepted by the English top-order batter. Salt released the ball in the air before crossing the boundary rope and then returned to the field to complete the catch. Even though Priyansh provided the required tempo, Punjab failed to gun down Bengaluru's competitive total. Throughout the chase, Punjab kept itself in the affair but kept losing wickets at regular intervals, which hurt their chances of lifting their maiden title. At the end, PBKS fell six runs short, which ensured that the wait for the title continued for Punjab, who reached their first final in 11 years under the exceptional leadership of Shreyas Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting. While it was agony for Punjab, skipper Rajat Patidar steered RCB to its first trophy in 18 years. With the end of adding the coveted IPL title to RCB's trophy cabinet, the special moment was met by tears in Virat Kohli's eyes. (ANI)

Fearsome foursome: Can Punjab's uncapped superboys land the final blow?

The Punjab Kings have never been the star-studded powerhouse in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Since finishing as runners-up in 2014 - when they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders in the final - they've struggled to make a mark, often falling short of playoff contention. For years, they've been a broken team with little hope from not this time. PBKS are in the final - and it's their young guns, led by the inspiring Shreyas Iyer, who have carried them here. The uncapped quartet of Prabhsimran Singh, Priyansh Arya, Nehal Wadhera, and Shashank Singh have all risen to the occasion, punching well above their weight to put PBKS within touching distance of the Kings are expected to go big one last time as they face the in-form Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the grand finale of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in goes on a rampage Priyansh Arya has been magnificent in his maiden IPL season. Courtesy: PTI While Nehal, Prabhsimran, and Shashank brought some prior IPL experience, Priyansh didn't - but that hasn't held him back. The left-hander has scored 451 runs in 16 games at a blistering strike rate of 183.33. Among PBKS batters with 450+ runs in a season, only Glenn Maxwell (187.75 in 2014) has had a higher strike now has the chance to become the third-highest run-scorer among uncapped PBKS players in a single IPL season. His joint fourth-fastest IPL century, scored in April against five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK), perfectly reflects his fearless mindset—unbothered by the reputation of any bowler he makes it count Prabhsimran Singh has scored over 500 runs in IPL 2025. Courtesy: PTI Prabhsimran Singh made his IPL debut back in 2019, but it's only in the 2025 season that he has truly showcased his potential. Fearless in his approach, the results have followed - as the saying goes, fortune favours the brave, and that has certainly been true for the 24-year-old Punjab batter. In 16 games, Prabhsimran has amassed 523 runs at an impressive strike rate of vs PBKS, IPL final Live Score and UpdatesIf he scores 94 or more in the final, Prabhsimran will make history by breaking Shaun Marsh's 18-year-old record for the most runs by an uncapped PBKS batter in a single IPL season. His partnership with Priyansh has also been a key factor in PBKS's success, with the duo putting together 489 runs—laying solid foundations at the top of the Shashank fire big time Nehal Wadhera has played handy knocks in the middle order. Courtesy: PTI While Prabhsimran and Priyansh have handled the bulk of the scoring, the middle order has played a crucial supporting role. Nehal and Shashank have consistently provided strong finishes, building on the foundation set by the top order. Their reliability has allowed Prabhsimran and Priyansh to bat with freedom, knowing the innings would remain in safe hands even if they fell Qualifier 2, Shreyas Iyer grabbed the spotlight with his 87-run knock in Ahmedabad, studded with eight boundaries. However, Nehal's 48-run innings was equally vital, coming at a crucial juncture when PBKS were struggling at 72 for three in pursuit of 205. The left-hander has been impressive throughout the season, scoring 354 runs at an average of 32.18 and a strike rate of meanwhile, holds the second-best average among PBKS batters - 41.28 - trailing only Shreyas' 54.81. This highlights that beyond being a clean striker of the ball, Shashank is also a dependable presence in the lineup. Although he fell for single digits in Qualifiers 1 and 2, he remains a strong contender to deliver in the final if the situation into the final, PBKS and their uncapped quartet may carry a psychological edge, having won both their matches in Ahmedabad—including a five-wicket victory over the Mumbai Indians. Told Priyansh Arya would be the find of IPL 2025, hard to argue now: Ricky Ponting

Punjab Kings' head coach Ricky Ponting was beaming with pride as he addressed the broadcasters after his team secured a top-two finish in the IPL 2025 league stage-their first in 11 years. The former Australian captain credited the team's success to a collective effort from a "hugely talented" group of players but was quick to highlight the emergence of a special young star: Priyansh a high-pressure clash against five-time champions Mumbai Indians, the 23-year-old Priyansh rose to the occasion with a brilliant knock of 62 off 35 balls, laced with nine boundaries and two sixes. On a tricky pitch at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, Arya anchored Punjab's chase of 185, forging a 109-run stand with Josh showed remarkable maturity, happily playing second fiddle when Inglis went after the Mumbai bowlers. The left-hander rotated the strike with ease and manipulated the field like a seasoned pro. PBKS vs MI: Highlights | Scorecard "I said maybe four or five games in that Priyansh is one of the finds of the tournament. Hard to argue with that now. Fearless young talent, seeing and hitting the ball," Ponting said after the victory on Monday, May had made a strong first impression in the opening game of the season, smashing 47 off just 23 balls in Punjab's win over Gujarat Titans. Known for hitting six sixes in an over during a Delhi Premier League match, Arya entered IPL 2025 with a reputation for explosive batting. While he had a couple of quiet outings early on, he roared back to form with a sensational 103 off 42 balls against Chennai Super Kings, rescuing Punjab from 83 for 5 to a match-winning century came shortly after he had been rattled by Jofra Archer's pace-a moment that revealed the youngster's grit. Arya bounced back with renewed confidence, showing his ability to absorb pressure and deliver when it mattered TICKS ALL BOXES IN NETS: IYERThroughout the tournament, Priyansh has evolved into a multi-dimensional batter. Inglis, Priyansh power Punjab Kings past Mumbai Indians into Qualifier 1

A century partnership between Priyansh Arya and Josh Inglis helped Punjab Kings ease to a seven-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in Jaipur on Monday (May 26, 2025), and seal its place in Qualifier 1 of IPL 2025. The duo combined for a 109-run association off 59 balls, putting Kings in control of the 185-run target, which they managed with nine balls to spare. The loss also pushed five-time champion MI into Friday's (May 30, 2025) Eliminator. MI's new-ball efficacy ensured that the openers Priyansh (62, 35b, 9x4, 2x6) and Prabhsimran Singh did not get off to a flier. The latter, in particular, failed to connect his attempted lofted shots, eventually falling to Jasprit Bumrah for less than a run-a-ball. Priyansh peppered the cover boundary early on before taking on MI's back-of-a-length approach to provide impetus. Maiden fifty Inglis (73, 42b, 9x4, 3x6), at the other end, ensured the side didn't get bogged down by the accuracy of Mitchell Santner, collecting 19 runs off 11 balls against the left-arm spinner on the way to his maiden IPL fifty. Santner managed to scalp both the half-centurions in his second spell, but the damage was done by then. Earlier, after being put in to bat, opener Ryan Rickelton gave MI a brisk start. The southpaw lofted over-pitched balls down the ground, and adjusted well to pull Arshdeep Singh's attempted bouncers to the boundary. But MI's attempts to maximise the PowerPlay was cut short when Marco Jansen used the extra bounce he extracts to remove his compatriot. The team's leading scorer, Suryakumar Yadav, injected some pace with three boundaries off Kyle Jamieson. But Harpreet Brar's removal of Rohit Sharma, courtesy a stunning diving catch by Nehal Wadhera, set the innings backwards again. The returning V. Vyshak then delivered a frugal opening spell, conceding just eight in his first two, before prising out both Tilak Varma and Will Jacks to help his side take control. A 44-run stand between Suryakumar, who eclipsed Sachin Tendulkar's record of 618 runs in a season for MI with another half-century, and skipper Hardik Pandya set up what Mumbai hoped would be a grandstand finish. However, despite a few hits across the fence, Arshdeep's double strike at the death restricted it to 184. Priyansh and Inglis then took over.

PBKS vs MI: Punjab secure top two spot after 11 years, send Mumbai to Eliminator

Josh Inglis' 73 and Priyansh Arya's 62 helped Punjab Kings secure a 7-wicket win over Mumbai Indians and make it to Qualifier 1 of the IPL 2025 season on Monday, May 26. The loss meant that MI will take part in the Eliminator as their batting and bowling failed to deliver in Jaipur. Priyansh and Inglis put on a 109-run stand off 59 balls and it proved to be the difference in the end. advertisementThis was the first time in 11 years that PBKS has finished in the top two of the IPL, and they will now wait to know the result of the LSG vs RCB game on May 27 to know if they will actually top the table. The Jaipur track has been delivering high-scoring thrillers over the past few games with PBKS' loss to DC seeing a total of 414 runs being scored across both innings. However, on Monday, it seemed like the pitch was a different one. PBKS won the toss and opted to field first, a decision Hardik welcomed as he was unsure about what to do. PBKS vs MI: Highlights | Scorecard The MI start was a mixed bag as there were boundaries but a lot of dot balls. Rohit Sharma, in particular, seemed to be struggling for a long time, especially against the left-arm pacers Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen, before a boundary in the third over. advertisementRickleton, on the other hand, played some delightful shots to keep the rate up. The introduction of Harpreet Brar helped Rohit get some momentum with a six and a boundary but Jansen accounted for the wicket of Rickleton to restrict MI to 52 for 1 in the powerplay. The next two overs saw MI's scoring rate reduce a bit before Suryakumar ensured 15 came off the ninth over from Kyle Jamieson as momentum seemed to shift for Mumbai. However, Harpreet would get the last laugh over Rohit as the MI legend was dismissed for 24 runs from 21 balls. This started a slump for MI as Vysakh Vijayakumar got the wicket of Tilak Verma first before dismissing Will Jacks, who looked menacing and had scored 17 off 8 balls. Amdist this, Suryakumar looked to be steady after getting to his 14th 25-plus score of the season and went past the record set by Sachin Tendulkar for MI. Hardik provided some brief entertainment with a few lusty blows but he also perished as it seemed like Mumbai abandoned the intention to get to 200. Naman Dhir, who is being groomed as the next finisher by MI, gave some much-needed momentum as he hit back-to-back sixes of Vysakh as Suryakumar also joined in with a couple of boundaries as 23 came off the 19th over. Arshdeep brought back some calmness by dismissing both men and ensuring just 3 runs came from the final over. advertisementThe PBKS innings started much like the MI one as Priyansh got a couple of boundaries in the first over before Deepak Chahar got a maiden against Prabhsimran. While Priyansh looked he was in the zone, Prabhsimran looked a bit itchy and unsettled in the middle. He almost gave away a chance to Chahar in the 4th over but Ashwani Kumar dropped a tough chance. This is when Bumrah was brought into the attack and he delivered immediate success with the wicket of Prabhsimran as Ashwani made amends this time. This brought Inglis to the middle, who has had starts at No.3, but was failing to kick on. However, the Aussie batter seemed to be in a different zone and started with a six off Chahar. He and Priyansh then started to ensure that they didn't let any of the MI bowlers and started to attack them. Santner was the first to feel the wrath before Hardik got the same treatment. advertisementThe duo brought their 50-run stand in the 9th over and the 100 for Punjab came in the 11th over. Inglis got to his fifty in 29 balls and Priyansh in 27 as they brought up their 100-run stand by the 14th over. While Priyansh departed, Inglis ensured he stayed almost till the end to ensure PBKS will play the Qualifier 1 in Mullanpur on May 29. 2014 deja vu for PunjabThe last time Punjab made it to the playoffs was in 2014. That squad was considered to be the best in the history of the franchise and they finished the at the top of the table. However, the story ended in a bit of an anti-climax as they lost the qualifier 1 and then the final in the end. Since then, they have been away from the play-offs, before this season. This time around, Punjab used their money wisely during the auction and bought a team that had incredible depth as compared to the rest. But the biggest change was the fearlessness and the backing the young Indian players in the squad. Priyansh and Prabhsimran won't always come off, but they play fearlessly and provided Punjab with the ideal start. advertisementThe vision of Ricky Ponting and the heart of Shreyas Iyer have powered this team on to new heights this season and they will be hoping that finishing in the top two doesn't turn out to be sour for them. The players are all coming together at the right time and Punjab will be dreaming of that elusive title win. Disappointed Mumbai will need to groupSome may argue that after their poor start, MI didn't deserve to be in the top four. But what they did after that initial slump was some performances that showed why they were 5-time IPL champions. Jasprit Bumrah's return and the likes of Suryakumar and Rohit finding form at the right time ensured that they reached the play-offs once again. However, their second loss in the last three games show that the wheels seem to be coming off a bit. In Jaipur, the bowling looked a bit clueless in front of Inglis and Priyansh, while the batters simply failed to find an extra gear in the middle overs. They cannot afford to have this in the play-offs, especially the Eliminator, as the competition between the top four has been sensational with minimum margin for errors. They now wait to see the result of the RCB vs LSG game to know their opponents for the Eliminator in Mullanpur. Stay updated on IPL 2025 with India Today!
