Julio Torres: ‘When I worked at SNL, I thought Shawn Mendes was an intern'

Your first comedy show was called My Favourite Shapes. What is your least favourite shape? A pentagon. Or an octagon. There's a rigidity to it that I find displacing. What's the oldest thing you own and why do you still have it? You know, I was just going into what I refer to as the forbidden closet in my apartment, which is just a door that I never open. And I saw in there a picture of the inside of a church that my mother took when she was in college. There is something eerie and mysterious and evocative about the photo. I like thinking of her as a young creative. What's the strangest thing you have in your fridge right now? The beautiful, strange patterns that mould creates over takeout. The life, the ecosystem, the beings I have created, the life I have given. What is your most controversial pop culture opinion? I am a big fan of the film Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, starring Cara Delevingne, Dane DeHaan and Rihanna. It's a Luc Besson movie. It is apparently France's most expensive film and it was not well received. It sort of came and went, but I really liked it. I love the spectacle of it, how big it is, how beautiful it is. What is your most cringeworthy run-in with a celebrity? [This happened] when I worked at Saturday Night Live. No one cringed, no one was harmed – but I did think that Shawn Mendes was an intern. I was like, what is this intern doing just like strolling the halls? I just looked at him and hesitated a little bit. I think I was confused by his very confident presence. And my mind went to, like, God, these NYU kids just think they own the place. But no, he was the star of that week or whatever. [I only realised] when I saw him through the monitors rehearsing his musical performance. What has been your biggest fashion crime to date? The brief period in my life where I wanted to wear what everyone else was wearing. What is the weirdest thing you have ever eaten? I'm vegan and I am not adventurous with food so I don't think I've ever eaten anything that exciting in my life. Like even when I was eating meat, I never strayed away from the four main kinds of meat that most people eat. But I have never had eggs. That's the weirdest thing I've never eaten. What is your favourite word? I like S's and I like V's and I like Z's and I like Y's and I like I's. I like Q's. I don't like P's, which it's strange because my first and only movie so far [Problemista] has a title with a P. Like if the letter P were a Pokémon, it'd be a normal type. It's basic and in a way that's not even like comforting. It's not like the letter A – that's also basic, but it's the best-case scenario for basic. A is like leading man vibes. If animals could talk, who would be the nicest? I think raccoons. They seem very happy to be there and apologetic. Your new show is called Colour Theories. If you could remove one colour from the rainbow, what would it be? I wouldn't remove any of them. But if I could add one colour to the rainbow, I would add clear. It's just not there. Julio Torres performs his show Colour Theories at Melbourne international comedy festival 15-20 April

Jesse Eisenberg calls Emma Stone his 'fairy godmother' after Film Independent Spirit Awards 2025 win

Jesse Eisenberg called actress Emma Stone his "fairy godmother" during his acceptance speech for best screenplay at the 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards, said The Hollywood Reporter. The Social Network actor won the best screenplay award for his film The Real Pain, which starred him and Kieran Kulkin in the lead roles. Emma Stone jointly produced it. At Santa Monica in California on Saturday, the actor said: "I met Emma when we were in Zombieland together in 2009 and since then — I write little magazine articles and little things on McSweeney's, and she's the only person, I'm including my mom here, who would take little screenshots of it over the last 15 years and send me things like, 'This is such a funny line!'" "She was, definitely still [is], the most famous person I know, and yet also the most dedicated to encouraging me as a writer. I think about her not as my producer, but like a fairy godmother, that I am riding the coattails of her goodwill. And I think it's so important that somebody like her, who is so unbelievably successful in all these mainstream movies, people like me and Julio [Torres], and Jane [Schoenbrun], to try to produce art movies with all the goodwill that she's amassed so brightly and observably over the last couple of years. Thanks, Emma." Stone produced the film alongside Eisenberg, Jennifer Semler, Ali Herting, Dave McCary, and Ewa Puszczynska. Eisenberg mentioned Torres and Schoenbrun because Stone produced their projects Fantasma and Problemista, and ' I Saw The TV Glow', respectively, which were also nominated at the Spirit Awards. A Real Pain was also nominated in the best supporting actor category for Kieran Culkin, who plays Eisenberg's cousin in the film. The film was nominated in the best screenplay category alongside Heretic, My Old Ass, A Different Man, and I Saw the TV Glow. Eisenberg is also nominated for best original screenplay at the upcoming 97th Academy Awards.

Emma Stone Has Sweet Reaction to Jesse Eisenberg's Surprise Shout-Out at Indie Spirit Awards

Jesse Eisenberg shocked his former Zombieland costar Emma Stone with a sweet shout-out during his Best Screenplay acceptance speech at the Independent Spirit Awards. On Saturday, February 22, Eisenberg, 41, took home the writing trophy for his film A Real Pain, which Stone, 36, produced alongside her husband, Dave McCary, under their Fruit Tree production company. 'I met Emma when we were in Zombieland together in 2009 and since then I write little magazine articles and little things on McSweeney's, and she's the only person, I'm including my mom here, who would take little screenshots of it over the last 15 years and send me things like, 'This is such a funny line!'' he said in his speech. 'At the time, she was definitely, and still [is], the most famous I know, and yet also the most dedicated to encouraging me as a writer.' The camera then panned to Stone, who shyly smiled as Eisenberg continued to praise her talent and efforts in the industry. She even mouthed 'oh my God' as he deemed her his 'fairy godmother.' Kieran Culkin Gushes About Working With Ex-Girlfriend Emma Stone: 'She's a Really Wonderful Person' 'I think about her not as my producer, but like a fairy godmother that I am riding the coattails of her goodwill,' he added. 'And I think it's so important that somebody like her, who is so unbelievably successful in mainstream movies, look for people like me and Julio [Torres], and Jane [Schoenbrun], to try to produce our movies with all the goodwill that she's amassed so rightly and deservedly over the last several years. Thanks, Emma.' Stone looked teary-eyed as the camera found her once again. She threw her hands up and seemingly told Eisenberg from her seat, 'Stop. What the hell?' The Oscar-winning actress looked lovely in an Emilia Wickstead ensemble, which featured a beaded and plunging black top and coordinating green skirt. She paired the look with black heels, Irene Neuwirth jewelry and her new pixie haircut. Stone was at the Santa Monica award show in celebration of A Real Pain as well as I Saw the TV Glow, Problemista and Fantasmas, which she also executive produced. Fruit Tree recently signed a first-look film deal at Universal. 'I've long admired Emma's versatility as an actress, fearlessly embodying every role. Paired with Dave's distinctive comedic voice and creative instincts, we've seen the incredible work they have accomplished together. We're thrilled to support the creative ambition and vision that Emma and Dave will continue to bring to projects behind the camera,' said NBC Universal chairman Donna Langley. Stone and McCary, 39, added, 'Fruit Tree was founded with a passion for supporting ambitious filmmakers and bold storytelling. Working with the amazing team at Universal allows us to push those boundaries even further. We couldn't be more grateful to Donna, Peter, and Erik for their partnership, and we are looking forward to what the future holds together.' The duo tied the knot in September 2020 and welcomed daughter Louise Jean in March 2021. Prior to marrying McCary, 42, Stone dated A Real Pain star Kieran Culkin as well as actor Andrew Garfield. Culkin — who is nominated for an Oscar for his role in A Real Pain — said Stone was a major reason why he did the movie, admitting to Vogue in September 2024 that he almost dropped out due to family obligations. (He shares two young children with his wife Jazz Charton.) Emma Stone and Husband Dave McCary's Low-Key Romance: A Timeline He recalled talking to Stone just weeks before the shoot was due to start: 'She goes: 'If you don't do it, the entire movie falls apart. But that's not your responsibility. You shouldn't feel that burden at all.'' Culkin marveled at her approach: 'She was nice enough to let me off the hook. So I guess I'm…in?' When he flew to Poland to film, Stone made sure she and McCary were even on the same flight for extra support.
