The White Lotus creator Mike White is returning to to iconic reality TV show

'The White Lotus' creator Mike White is returning for 'Survivor 50' The 54-year-old writer and director - who competed on the reality show's 'David vs. Goliath' season in 2018 - will be back to help the CBS franchise mark its 50th anniversary alongside 23 other returning players. On Wednesday (28.05.25), host and executive producer Jeff Probst told 'CBS Mornings': "Mike, after he finished playing, said, 'I want to play again'. 'When 'White Lotus' hit, and I thought, 'Well, he'll never play again.' "But he kept texting and saying, 'Look, I'm serious. If you ever do anything where you have returning players, I want to play again.' So we're happy to have Mike.' Before 'Survivor' in 2018, Mike was best known for his work as a screenwriter on the likes of 'School of Rock', 'Nacho Libre' and 'Pitch Perfect 3'. Three years after he made it to the end of the intense reality show, he found success as the creator, writer and director of anthology thriller series 'The White Lotus'. He's cast a number of his fellow 'Survivor' alumni in the HBO series, which could endear him to the other contestants in the upcoming 50th season. In 2021, Mike - who also appeared on 'The Amazing Race' in 2009 - opened up about his love for reality TV, and insisted taking part in Survivor' in 2018 wasn't done as a joke. He told The New Yorker magazine: "'Survivor' is the only show I really devotedly watch, even though I get frustrated with it. 'Part of my job and my way of life is studying people and analyzing motivation and character. I still feel like, even on the most contrived reality show, the people are human and they're more interesting than some of the most well-scripted drama. "And for me, as a writer of drama, I aspire to do what reality television already does. To create characters that are surprising and dimensional and do weird shit and capture your attention.' However, at the time he didn't expect Jeff to want him back on board for another stint. he said: "Probst is like, 'Let's be real—you're never going to go on the show again'. I was like, 'Really? Why?' "We are friends. We've become more friends since I was on the show, and he's an impressive guy. I think the fact that we've become close is probably why he says that. "I don't know. I don't think they want the Hollywood Goliath who knows Probst to win a season. "Now that Probst knows I can get to the end, I don't think he wants there to be a chance of that happening again.'

State panel says no to former law officer

PIERRE, S.D. (KELO) — A woman who agreed last year to surrender her South Dakota law enforcement officer certification will have to wait at least another year to try again at getting it back. The South Dakota Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Training Commission on Wednesday voted to deny the recertification request from Norma Probst. Growing the line dancing community one step at a time Probst, a November 2023 graduate of the state Basic Law Enforcement Training Certification course, left the Vermillion Police Department in 2024 after signing an agreement to give up her law enforcement certification. She had been investigated by the Vermillion Police Department and the Clay County State's Attorney for problems including an inaccurate statement involving three searches within the same week. Clay County State's Attorney Michael Smith concluded that he couldn't call Probst as a witness in future court cases because she was unreliable. That led to Probst giving up her state certification. This year, Probst sought reinstatement. Appearing without an attorney, she told the commission via telephone on Wednesday that she didn't intentionally misrepresent any information. Hank Prim, the commission's executive secretary, however recommended that reinstatement be denied, because of what he described as 'recency.' Prim said Probst could try again in one year. The commissioners went into executive session for about 20 minutes to discuss Probst's request. When they returned, one of the commissioners, Lincoln County State's Attorney Thomas Wollman, made the motion to deny Probst's reinstatement. As reasons, Wollman cited the investigation record and the commission staff's subsequent review of the record. There was no further public discussion by the commission. Probst's recertification was denied on a voice vote with no dissent. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Jeff Probst says last 'Survivor 50 'cast cuts were 'brutal'

Survivor host Jeff Probst announced the cast of Survivor 50 on the Wednesday edition of CBS Mornings by dramatically pulling the names of the returning players that made the cut out of an urn. A record 24 contestants will be heading back to the island in the hopes of winning the million dollars when the season airs in 2026, including one player from the franchise's first season as well as two competitors from Survivor 49, which has not even aired yet. But what about the players who did not make the cut? Fan favorite hopefuls like Carolyn Wiger, Jerri Manthey, Abi-Maria Gomes, and others have taken to social media over the past few weeks once they were informed they would not be part of the landmark season, with fans also chiming in on which contestants they wished had been selected for Survivor 50. (Justice for Sean Rector!) Probst addressed the casting process and how they got from 750 players down to 24 when he beamed into CBS Mornings after the pre-taped reveal to chat with hosts Gayle King, Nate Burleson and Vladimir Duthiers. 'Here's what we realized early on,' Probst told the hosts when asked about getting down to 24 players. 'Casting Survivor 50 was kind of like casting the ultimate all-time movie. And you think about all the actors who are alive today that you could put in that movie, but there is only so many roles, and we wanted 50 to be a little taste of everything. 'Cause, Gayle, we've done Heroes vs. Villains, and Game Changers, and Fans vs. Favorites, and winners. We wanted to taste every flavor, every type personality, all the eras.' Probst said their first list had 200 names of returnees. 'And so we went from 200 on a list to 100, to 80, to 50. And then those last 26, they were brutal cuts,' he told the hosts. 'And they still are. There are so many people we could have put out there, but there are only so many people you can put on the show.' When asked by King why Survivor: David vs. Goliath runner-up and The White Lotus creator Mike White made the list, Probst said there was never a question, unless it came from the player's side. 'I mean, do you have to ask? Mike, after he finished playing, he said 'I want to play again.' And that was before White Lotus. And then White Lotus hit and I thought, 'Well, he'll never play again.' But he kept texting and saying, 'Look, I'm serious. If you ever do anything where you have returning players, I want to play again.' So, we're happy to have Mike back.' When it was pointed out by Duthiers that White — who has put several of his David vs. Goliath castmates onto The White Lotus — could use the lure of future cameos as a game move — Probst sounded like he almost expected it. 'Don't think Mike White, who is clever enough to write and direct White Lotus, has not thought about that.' Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly

Survivor 49 Cast, Location, Release Date Window & Things We Know

has recently concluded. As such, fans of the reality series are eagerly anticipating information about the subsequent installment, Survivor 49. They wish to learn about the new installment's cast, where it will take place, and when it will come out. Created by Mark Burnett and Charlie Parsons, Survivor sees sixteen contestants or castaways split into two or more teams or 'tribes.' The tribes are then dropped on a remote island, where they must survive with a limited amount of supplies for 39 days. So, who is part of Survivor 49's cast? What location will Survivor 49 take place in? What is Survivor 49's release date? Here are all your questions answered. As of writing, it's unknown who will be part of Survivor 49's cast. This is because the official full list of castaways hasn't been confirmed. However, longtime host Jeff Probst will be reprising hosting duties for the new season. Rumors swirled on the internet, suggesting singer-songwriter Dierks Bentley would be featured in Survivor 49. However, Probst shot down the rumor in a TVLine interview. He said that he and the creatives had reached out to Bentley, who admitted interest in doing Survivor 'one day,' but 'not right now.' Probst promised a 'unique' season for fans in an Entertainment Weekly interview. He also offered a gist of what viewers can expect from the castaways this season and the challenges they'll be facing. Probst shared, 'This is a very likable and quirky group of players that are going to encounter a Fijian summer so sweltering it feels like the jungle is breathing on you.' Survivor 49's filming location is the Mamanuca Islands in Fiji, according to Parade Magazine. The Mamanuca Islands are one of Fiji's most popular tourist destinations. Survivor 49 could come out sometime by the end of 2025. This is because the reality series has so far followed a two-season-per-year release pattern. Moreover, rumors for Survivor 50's cast reveal have begun propping up online. Thus, this indicates that things are moving swiftly with Survivor 49, ensuring it releases by the time this year comes to a close. Scientists propose novel way of treating mosquitoes for malaria

Mosquitoes should be given malaria drugs to clear their infection so they can no longer spread the disease, say US researchers. Malaria parasites, which kill nearly 600,000 people a year, mostly children, are spread by female mosquitoes when they drink blood. Current efforts aim to kill mosquitoes with insecticide rather than curing them of malaria. But a team at Harvard University has found a pair of drugs which can successfully rid the insects of malaria when absorbed through their legs. Coating bed nets in the drug cocktail is the long-term aim. Sleeping under a bed net has been one of the most successful ways of preventing malaria as the main malaria-spreading mosquitoes hunt at night. Vaccines to protect children living in high-risk malaria areas are also recommended. Nets are both a physical barrier and also contain insecticides which kill mosquitoes that land on them. But mosquitoes have become resistant to insecticide in many countries so the chemicals no longer kill the insects as effectively as they used to. "We haven't really tried to directly kill parasites in the mosquito before this, because we were just killing the mosquito," says researcher Dr Alexandra Probst, from Harvard. However, she says that approach is "no longer cutting it". Urgent action needed as malaria resists key drug The researchers analysed malaria's DNA to find possible weak spots while it is infecting mosquitoes. They took a large library of potential drugs and narrowed it down to a shortlist of 22. These were tested when female mosquitoes were given a blood-meal contaminated with malaria. In their article in Nature, the scientists describe two highly effective drugs that killed 100% of the parasites. The drugs were tested on material similar to bed nets. "Even if that mosquito survives contact with the bed net, the parasites within are killed and so it's still not transmitting malaria," said Dr Probst. "I think this is a really exciting approach, because it's a totally new way of targeting mosquitoes themselves." She says the malaria parasite is less likely to become resistant to the drugs as there are billions of them in each infected person, but less than five in each mosquito. The effect of the drugs lasts for a year on the nets, potentially making it a cheap and long-lasting alternative to insecticide, the researchers say. This approach has been proven in the laboratory. The next stage is already planned in Ethiopia to see if the anti-malarial bed nets are effective in the real world. It will take at least six years before all the studies are completed to know if this approach will work. But the vision is to have bed nets treated with both anti-malaria drugs and insecticide so that if one approach doesn't work, then the other will.
