Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar on Monday said the department, in collaboration with the Udupi District Chamber of Commerce, has planned to install 601 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in 207 junctions in the district.
The ambitious project, to be implemented at an estimated cost of ₹2.5 crore, Mr. Shankar told reporters in Udupi, was aimed at ensuring the safety of citizens in the district. Border areas, areas prone to communal strife and vantage locations would be covered in the initial stage of implementation.
As many as 10 Automatic Number Plate Reader cameras would be installed at Mala, Hosmar and Sachharipete in Karkala rural police limits, Sanur in Karkala town police, Someshwara in Hebri police, Hosangadi in Amasebail police, Dali in Kollur police, Melgangolli in Gangolli police, Malpe Beach in Malpe police and City Bus Stand in Udupi Town Police station limits, the SP said.
Further, 10 high-resolution cameras would be installed at Kalsanka and Karavali Junctions, Indrali Bridge, Santhekatte, Service Bus Stand, and old KSRTC Bus Stand in Udupi City Municipality limits, M. Kodi Junction, and Kandlur town in Kundapur subdivision, and Baradi and Naravi in Karkala subdivision limits. Jurisdictional police, as well as personnel at the district control room, would continuously monitor these cameras, Mr. Shankar said.
Project Drishti
The SP said the police have already launched Project Drishti, wherein trained security guards would be deployed for night patrolling, at 12 locations in the district. It will be extended to 21 more locations shortly.
The project was in vogue in Udupi city, Shirva, Gangolli, Kundapur, Hebri, Karkala Town, Hiriyadka, Shankaranarayana and Brahmavara. Whenever the security guards observe any suspicious activity during night patrol (10 p.m. to 6 a.m.), they would inform the beat police as well as the police control room. The initiative would help curb criminal activities, such as theft and burglary, to a large extent, he said.
Residents of the localities collectively bear the salary expenses of the security guards, the SP added.
Chamber of Commerce president Ammunje Prabhakara Nayak, secretary Vijayendra, additional SP Sudhakar S. Naik and others were present.
