Actor-singer Naim Daniel denies sex with minor

The 28-year-old, whose full name is Muhammad Na'im Daniel Baharin, pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here yesterday to a charge of sexually assaulting an underaged girl. In the closed door proceedings, Na'im claimed trial to a charge of sexually assaulting the 17-year-old teenager at a hotel in Jalan Harapan, Petaling Jaya, at 8.56pm on May 19. He was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act, which provides for a maximum 20 years' imprisonment and also liable for whipping, if convicted. Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Izzah Shaharuddin offered bail at RM15,000 with conditions. She asked the court to impose an order for the accused to surrender his passport and not to harass the prosecution witnesses in any way. Sessions Court judge M. Kunasundary fixed bail at RM12,000 in one surety and allowed the prosecution's application on additional conditions. He ordered the accused to surrender his passport and for Na'im not to come near the witnesses. The case is fixed for mention on Aug 18. Na'im paid the bail. Speaking to the press after the proceedings ended, Na'im asked for no interference in the case and that he was leaving it to the justice system. 'I have just been charged with a serious allegation. 'I know there are a lot of questions and that this is shocking but I do not wish to comment further,' he said. Na'im is known for his roles in the TV series Projek: High Council, Lelaki Lingkungan Cinta and I.D. In 2020, he won for Best Song at the 34th Anugerah Juara Lagu.

Naim, whose full name is Muhammad Na'im Daniel Baharin, 28, made the plea after the charge was read out before Judge Datin M. Kunasundary during a closed-door proceeding. According to the charge, the "Sumpah" singer was accused of committing physical sexual assault against the teenager who was 17 years and seven months old at the time for sexual purposes at a hotel at 8.56pm on May 19. He was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a maximum jail sentence of 20 years and whipping, if convicted. During the proceedings, deputy public prosecutor Nurul Izzah Shaharuddin offered RM15,000 bail with one surety. "This includes additional conditions. The accused must surrender his passport to the court and is prohibited from contacting the victim or prosecution witnesses," she said. Last week, it was reported that a singer-actor was arrested to assist investigations into a sexual assault case involving a 17-year-old girl at a hotel in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. It is understood that the victim got to know the celebrity three months ago at a café where she worked and they met several times after that. Bukit Aman Sexual, Women and Child Investigation Division (D11) principal assistant director Senior Assistant Commissioner Siti Kamsiah Hassan confirmed that several meetings took place following their initial acquaintance.
