'Maalik' box office collections Day 13: Rajkummar Rao's film slows down further with Rs 25 lakhs collection; total reaches Rs 24.30 cr
Rajkummar Rao 's political thriller 'Maalik' seems to have hit a roadblock in its box office journey. As reported by the Sacnilk website, after a respectable first week that brought in Rs 21.20 crore, the film has struggled to keep up its pace in the second week. On Day 13, which fell on a Wednesday, 'Maalik' collected an estimated Rs 25 lakhs , taking its India net total to Rs 24.30 crore. Sluggish weekday numbers tell the story 'Maalik' saw a solid start with weekend numbers of Rs 5.25 crore each on Saturday and Sunday. Unfortunately it began sliding from Monday onward. The steepest drop came on the second Monday (Day 11) when it collected only Rs 25 lakhs down over 70% from the previous day. Since then, the film has been hovering below the Rs 40 lakh mark daily. Tuesday brought a slight uptick with Rs 35 lakhs, but Wednesday fell back again to Rs 25 lakhs . With just ₹3.10 crore added so far in Week 2, the sharp contrast to its first-week performance is hard to miss. Occupancy and regional turnout reflect the dip The film managed an overall Hindi 2D occupancy of just 13.87%. Morning shows registered the lowest with 6.22%, while night shows peaked at 23.02%. In terms of key markets, Mumbai led with 15.25% occupancy, followed by NCR at 12.50%, Bengaluru at 11%, and Pune trailing at 6.75%. With weekday footfalls this low, it's becoming increasingly unlikely that Maalik will cross Rs 27 crore in its theatrical run—unless the upcoming weekend offers a surprise boost. After an average opening, the film closed its first weekend on a better note with nearly $2.5 million at the global box office. Meanwhile, Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan had a damp opening weekend at the box office. Rajkummar Rao's Maalik closes first weekend below $2 million Maalik had a rather underwhelming opening on July 11, Friday. In India, the film made nearly $570,000 on day one. In a film which fails to grant basics of human decency to the storyline, Rao shines through with sheer talent. His dedication, riding on an author-backed role, raises the film several notches higher. The same cannot be said about the rest of the cast, though it is an impressive one. Barring one - Sachdeva is as authentic as he gets in his role of a jealous and ambitious businessman. Surprisingly, even veteran actor Shukla is not at his best in Maalik. Keeping the flaws aside, Maalik offers a good theatrical experience for Hindi cinema lovers. The gory action sequences are as gritty as a typical Hindi crime drama. Some of the best moments land when Rao shares the screen with Shukla and Sachdeva. Interestingly, the film also offers a peek into the socio-political climate of the region, bringing in layers of caste and power dynamics. Co-written by Mansi Bagla, director Singh and Niranjan Iyengar, Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan begins on a promising note - a dedicated theatre actor boards a train blind-folded in her bid to prep for an audition. A blind artist meets her on the way and the way their chemistry unfolds forms the crux of the story. Vikrant Massey plays the blind musician who falls for the girl. The premise warranted a layered and deep love story. Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan, however, descends into the abyss of illogical and cold exchanges. The love story is not warm enough to touch hearts. The mesmerizing and visually appealing frames in the film are unable to compensate.
