Any kind of terrorism, religious extremism is unacceptable in Africa: Ethiopian leader
Addis Ababa : Speaker of the House of Ethiopia, Tagesse Chafo, has highlighted "very long-standing relationship" between India and his country and stressed the importance of working together with New Delhi and international organisations to eradicate terrorism. Speaking to ANI, he said: "We have to work together with the people of India and all relevant authorities in the African Union and the UN to eradicate this evil act." "India and Ethiopia have a very long-standing relationship. Terrorism happens in some parts of Africa. Any kind of terrorism and religious extremism is unacceptable in Africa. We have to stand together. A global coalition is very important," he added. The Supriya Sule-led delegation is in Ethiopia. The delegation includes Rajiv Pratap Rudy (BJP), Vikramjit Singh Sahney (AAP), Manish Tewari (Congress), Anurag Singh Thakur (BJP), Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu (TDP), Anand Sharma (Congress), V Muraleedharan (BJP), and former diplomat Syed Akbaruddin. On Saturday, the delegation had several meetings, including one with Adem Farah, Vice President of the Prosperity Party, Ethiopia's ruling party; a meeting with the Peace and Security Council of the African Union at its Headquarters; meeting with former Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, and also met with Tagesse Chaffo, Speaker of the House of Peoples' Representatives of Ethiopia and members of the House. The delegation had arrived at Bole International Airport in Ethiopia on Friday, where they were received and welcomed by the Ambassador of India to Ethiopia, Anil Kumar Rai. Recently, the delegation concluded its diplomatic visit to South Africa with a series of meetings at India House in Pretoria, the administrative capital of South Africa, involving political leaders, think tanks, and the Indian diaspora. Seven all-party delegations are taking part in various outreach programmes in the countries they are assigned to. The delegations aim to brief international partners on India's response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and its fight against cross-border terrorism. The seven delegations are visiting Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Algeria, the UK, France, Germany, the EU, Italy, Denmark, Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, Japan, Singapore, the UAE, Liberia, Congo, Sierra Leone, the US, Panama, Guyana, Brazil, Colombia, Spain, Greece, Slovenia, Latvia, Russia, Egypt, Qatar, Ethiopia, and South Africa.

Sule-led delegation boosts counter-terrorism ties during Ethiopia visit
The multi-party Indian Parliamentary delegation, currently visiting Ethiopia from May 30 to June 1, 2025, in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, held fruitful engagements and intense discussions with top Ethiopian lawmakers, dignitaries, and the African Union Commission According to a press release by Indian Embassy in Ethiopia, the Indian delegationled by Supriya Sule began their visit by meeting with Adem Farah, Deputy Chairperson of the Prosperity Party in the rank of Deputy Prime Minister. The visiting delegation conveyed India's unified and determined stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. The Members of Parliament briefed on India's 'New Normal' against cross-border attacks, zero tolerance for terrorism, and all political parties' resolve to stand united in all matters of national interest. Both sides reiterated their zero-tolerance approach to terrorism. Deputy PM Farah strongly condemned the terrorist act and expressed the need for collective international action. He also conveyed Ethiopia's strong commitment to work with India in the field of counter-terrorism. The delegation also held fruitful discussions with the African Union and exchanged views on ways and means to counter terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. The African Union has a well-structured definition for terrorism which clearly defines the acts which constitute terrorist acts. This interaction provided the delegation with valuable input on international trends and the African Union's role in preventing and combating terrorism more effectively. This was followed by a meeting with Tagesse Chaffo Speaker of the House of People's Representatives of Ethiopia. Both sides explored the possibility of strengthening cooperation between the two nations in the field of counter-terrorism as well as mutual exchanges of parliamentary delegations. The Speaker conveyed his deepest sympathy and appreciated India for the strong message of unity and zero tolerance of terrorism. He also said the visit underlined the importance of solidarity in the fight against terrorism and highlighted the role of parliamentarians in this global effort. During the meetings, the Indian members underscored the continued threat of cross-border terrorism and deliberate attempts to sow social discord in India. They highlighted that Operation Sindoor, conducted by India in response, was calibrated, highly precise, and demonstrated India's strong commitment to international norms against terrorism. The Ethiopian side appreciated India's zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism and condemned the terrorists who carried out the 22 April 2024 Pahalgam attack. They expressed willingness to work with India to address this global challenge. The day concluded with fruitful interaction with the Indian community in Ethiopia. The delegation recognised the vital contribution of diaspora and conveyed India's commitment towards its diaspora. The members condemned the propaganda of some individuals who seek to undermine social harmony, citing the divisive principles of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' and their contribution in resisting divisive forces in destabilising India's social fabric. The visit underscores the importance of international solidarity in combating terrorism and promoting peace.

Execution video from 2021 filmed in Ethiopia's Tigray region, not in Amhara
The 19-second clip posted on Facebook on May 15, 2025, is accompanied by text in Amharic that reads: 'Do not ask me why I must support Fano. Do not ask me why I hated the prosperity party and soldiers in military uniform.' The Prosperity Party governs Ethiopia. Image Screenshot of the misleading post, taken on May 19, 2025. The video, which has been shared more than 470 times, also contains a text overlay in Amharic which translates to: 'Amharas are being massacred. Please share this video with all.' The harrowing footage shows people wearing military uniforms rounding up and shooting an unarmed group in civilian clothes in a dry, hilly area. A similar post was also shared on Facebook. Amhara conflict After the Ethiopian federal government decided to disarm all local paramilitary groups in April 2023, the Fano militia – who were former allies during the Tigray war – turned against the state and a fresh conflict began in the Amhara region (archived here). AFP reported in March 2025 that the fighting has caused a humanitarian crisis: several million children are out of school and many hospitals are no longer functioning (archived here). In the same month, federal forces said they had killed nearly 300 Fano fighters, while reports indicated that the government had lost control of much of the rural areas in the region. Last year, Amnesty International reported that the Ethiopian army had carried out extrajudicial executions of civilians in Amhara (archived here). However, the footage circulating on Facebook is unrelated to current events in the region. Mahbere Dego massacre AFP Fact Check used the video verification tool InVID-WeVerify to conduct reverse image searches on keyframes from the video. The results established that a longer version of the clip, just over 90 seconds in length, was published on a gore site on June 17, 2021. A week later, Bellingcat, an independent organisation known for its digital investigative reporting on armed conflicts, published a report about this specific footage, which had been circulating on social media at the time, and concluded it was similar to other videos it verified of a massacre by Ethiopian soldiers in Mahbere Dego in the Tigray region sometime in January 2021 (archived here). Bellingcat's report included screenshots from the footage, which we matched to the video in the Facebook posts falsely claiming the events depicted were filmed recently in Amhara. 'New video of Ethiopia massacre shows soldiers documenting executions,' the CNN caption reads (archived here). Months earlier, in April 2021, Belligcat ran an in-depth report on the Mahbere Dego massacre based on similar footage it believed was filmed in the same place and at the same time (archived here). BBC Africa Eye also published a similar investigative report about the massacre in the same month (archived here). The war in Tigray, pitting the Ethiopian military against the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), cost more than 600,000 lives before a peace agreement was signed in Pretoria, South Africa, in November 2022 (archived here).
