SIBU (Aug 10): The 125-metre pedestrian walkway between SJK (C) Rejang Park and Rejang Park Traffic Garden will soon be upgraded into a covered walkway to protect students from the elements.
State Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government (Public Health and Housing) Datuk Michael Tiang said the RM200,000 project, funded under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), is expected to be completed next month.
'Students will no longer be exposed to the sun or rain,' he said during a visit to the school yesterday.
Tiang noted that many parents currently park at the Rejang Park Traffic Garden – near the public restroom – during school drop-off and pick-up times to avoid traffic congestion outside the school.
Their children then use the existing pedestrian walkway to get to and from school.
'I believe the most serious congestion happens during school let-off, when both the Rejang Park Traffic Garden car park and the roadside near the school are packed with vehicles picking up children.
'This is why many parents choose to park at the Traffic Garden (near the public toilet) and wait for their children to walk over from the school,' said Pelawan assemblyman.
He added that on hot days, students have to endure the blazing sun, and during downpours, those without umbrellas must dash through the rain to reach their parents – often a heart-wrenching sight. Parts of the current walkway are also uneven, posing safety hazards.
'As a parent myself, I want children to be spared from the sun and rain. Moreover, as the Pelawan assemblyman, I decided to allocate RM200,000 from the RTP to build this covered walkway, which is expected to be completed in September,' he said.
Once completed, he said, it will be the longest covered walkway in Sibu, serving as a new landmark that connects the school with the surrounding community. longest covered walkway Michael Tiang RTP Sibu SJK (C) Rejang Park
