Zheng Geping awarded Public Service Medal for contributions to Woodlands CCC, Entertainment News

Local actor-director Zheng Geping was conferred the Public Service Medal (Pingat Bakti Masyarakat) at the National Day Awards this year. The list of recipients was announced on Saturday (Aug 9) by the Prime Minister's Office, where his name is included. The 61-year-old, who has volunteered for 15 years, was awarded for his service at the Woodlands Citizens' Consultative Committee (CCC). He told Shin Min Daily News in a report published on Saturday that he had learnt about his award through Sembawang GRC MP Mariam Jaafar just a few days prior. He added that other than his family, he didn't tell anyone else about the honour, as he believed he only made a small contribution to the community. Geping is married to local actress Hong Huifang, 64, and they have two children, actress Tay Ying, 29, and singer-actor Calvert Tay, 25. Tay Ying tied the knot with celebrity chef Wu Sihan, 33, in June. He told the Chinese daily he signed up as a volunteer years ago after being urged by his friend: "I joined because of my curiosity about what the team does. I am not a resident of Woodlands." As a volunteer, Geping is involved in various events in the neighbourhood, including distributing items to families in need, community performances, fundraising at charity events and helping out at the Meet-the-People sessions and he said it's a fulfilling experience for him. He said the most gratifying part about volunteering is bringing happiness to the residents and recipients, especially the senior citizens. Geping added that he would continue to volunteer whenever he is available. He also made a Instagram post yesterday, where he shared he is "deeply grateful and humbled" to receive the award. He wrote: "This recognition is not mine alone. It belongs to my brothers and sisters at Woodlands CCC, the amazing residents of Woodlands, and our tireless Advisor Mariam Jaafar. Your trust, love and support inspire me to keep serving with heart." [[nid:721215]] No part of this article can be reproduced without permission from AsiaOne.

GE2025: Indranee Rajah to lead PAP's new Pasir Ris-Changi GRC team, Teo Chee Hean steps aside after 28 years

The People's Action Party (PAP) has announced that Indranee Rajah will helm its four-member team contesting the newly created Pasir Ris-Changi GRC, following the retirement of Teo Chee Hean from electoral politics after nearly three decades. The announcement was made on 21 April 2025, with PAP confirming that Teo, who has anchored Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC since the last election, will not be standing in the upcoming contest. Teo Chee Hean steps down after 28 years Teo expressed gratitude to residents and volunteers, calling his time in Pasir Ris 'a privilege and an honour'. Though stepping down from contesting, he stated that he remains 'available to contribute' in any capacity the party deems suitable. 'I would like to thank all our residents, all our volunteers, all our partners in Pasir Ris for your kindness, your friendship and your support for the past 28 years,' said Teo during the announcement. He also voiced confidence in the new team, urging residents to support them. Indranee Rajah makes unexpected shift from Tanjong Pagar to lead new GRC team Indranee, previously Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar GRC for 14 years, currently serves as Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and holds dual roles as Second Minister for Finance and National Development. At the press briefing, she described her transition as 'poignant yet exciting', expressing appreciation for her time in Tanjong Pagar but readiness for a new challenge in Pasir Ris-Changi. She outlined three priorities if elected: cost of living, family support, and infrastructure development. 'I am already involved in addressing cost of living issues at the national level… I would like to do more of this at the local level,' she stated. Valerie Lee joins PAP's Pasir Ris-Changi team Joining Indranee on the slate is Desmond Tan, Senior Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office, and Sharael Taha, a former Member of Parliament for Pasir Ris-Punggol. The fourth candidate is Valerie Lee, 39, who is making her electoral debut. Lee is currently head of corporate affairs for Singapore and Southeast Asia at Sembcorp Industries. She previously held leadership roles at Singtel and SP Group and was awarded the Public Service Medal in 2023. Lee is also an active community volunteer and former chairman of The Frontier Community Club Management Committee. She spoke openly at the press event about her personal journey, including two miscarriages, and expressed a desire to represent families and individuals navigating similar experiences. 'This experience has really grown me in ways I didn't expect… it made me more determined to be a voice for those who often feel unheard,' Lee said. She emphasised her belief in ground-up ideas: 'The best ideas don't come from the top, but from Singaporeans themselves.' SDA to contest in Pasir Ris-Changi The Pasir Ris-Changi GRC was created following the March 2025 report from the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee. It merges remaining districts from the dissolved Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC with sections of East Coast GRC, including Loyang and Flora estates, as well as Pulau Ubin and Pulau Tekong. This new constituency will serve 100,639 voters. Of these, 12,871 are from the East Coast wards now included in the new formation. The Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) has earlier confirmed it will contest Pasir Ris-Changi, with chairman Desmond Lim stating that the party will focus its resources there. SDA has consistently contested the Pasir Ris-Punggol area since 2006 but has not secured a seat. In the 2020 General Election, Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC saw a three-cornered fight between PAP, SDA, and People's Voice (PV). PAP emerged victorious with 64.16 per cent of the vote. PV failed to retain its election deposit due to a poor showing. This year, the People's Alliance for Reform, which includes PV, has not included Pasir Ris-Changi among the seven constituencies it plans to contest.

GE2025: SM Teo Chee Hean steps aside as Indranee Rajah leads PAP slate at new Pasir Ris-Changi GRC

As for Ms Indranee, she said that today's introduction is 'both poignant yet exciting at the same time'. She added that it would miss the uncles and aunties (in Tanjong Pagar), but she assured the public that the party will field a solid team there, and being a candidate in Pasir-Ris Changi 'brings a new opportunity to serve'. At Pasir Ris-Changi, if elected, Ms Indranee said that she would like to focus on three areas – cost of living, families as well as infrastructure. 'I am already involved in addressing (cost of living issues) at the national level, because of my work in the Ministry of Finance. I would like to do more of this at the local level.' VALERIE LEE Ms Lee, 39, head of corporate affairs for Singapore and Southeast Asia at Sembcorp Industries, was previously spotted on the ground in West Coast GRC and East Coast GRC. She was previously the chairman of The Frontier Community Club Management Committee in Pioneer SMC, and was awarded the Public Service Medal in 2023. Ms Lee was also formerly the director of Singtel's energy business, and deputy director of SP Group's commercial energy platform. She is the mother of a two-year-old, and said during the press conference that she had two miscarriages previously. She said on Monday: 'This experience has really grown in ways that I didn't expect, but it also made me more determined than ever to be a voice for those who often feel unheard in the journey of starting a family and subsequently maintaining one. 'Through my years of volunteering, I've come to the conclusion that the best ideas don't come from the top, but from the ground up, from Singaporeans themselves. And I love bringing those ideas to life,' added Ms Lee. With the formation of a new Punggol GRC following last month's Electoral Boundaries Review Committee report, the remaining districts in the now-defunct Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC were merged with adjacent areas from East Coast GRC. Together with the Loyang and Flora estates, they formed Pasir Ris-Changi GRC. The Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) has said it will contest the GRC, with party chairman Desmond Lim saying it will focus its resources there. SDA has been contesting Pasir Ris-Punggol in every election since 2006 without success. At the last election in 2020, Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC hosted a three-way contest between the PAP, SDA and People's Voice (PV). The PAP won with 64.16 per cent of the vote, while PV lost its deposit. The People's Alliance for Reform coalition, which comprises three parties including PV, did not include Pasir Ris-Changi in the seven constituencies it said it would contest. For this year's election, Pasir Ris-Changi GRC will see 100,639 voters, with the East Coast wards - covering areas in Changi, Loyang as well as Pulau Ubin and Pulau Tekong - comprising 12,871 voters.
