Pueblo man charged with murder after assault victim dies from injuries

A Pueblo man has been charged with first-degree murder after police allege he assaulted a man who died from his injuries 10 days later. Ryan Ramos, 42, was charged with murder in connection with an April 15 incident, according to a Pueblo Police Department news release. Police were called to the 600 block of Main Street at approximately 8:33 p.m. that evening on a reported assault. Officers arrived and found an unresponsive man, who was transported to a local hospital. Ramos was arrested and originally charged with first-degree assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of a financial device, and on warrants for failure to appear and two counts of being a fugitive of justice. The victim in the case, who has not yet been publicly identified by the Pueblo County Coroner's Office, died as a result of his injuries on April 25. Ramos's assault charge was subsequently upgraded to first-degree murder. The county coroner will identify the victim after his next of kin has been notified. The man's death marks Pueblo's fourth homicide of 2025. Ramos is currently being held in the Pueblo County jail on a $500,000 bond, according to jail records. A court appearance in the matter had not been set as of the evening of May 1. Coroner IDs homicide victim in April 6 drive-by; police say suspect vehicle found

A 19-year-old Pueblo man who was shot and killed April 6 in an alleged drive-by shooting was identified April 11 by the Pueblo County Coroner's Office. Michael James Suazo sustained a gunshot wound during a confrontation in the 1900 block of North Hudson Avenue and was pronounced dead at the scene by a coroner investigator. His next of kin has been notified, according to the coroner. Pueblo police officers were called to an area near the intersection of Hudson Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Bypass, formerly U.S. Highway 50 E Bypass, at approximately 5:14 p.m. Sunday to investigate a report of gunshots exchanged between occupants of two vehicles, according to Pueblo Police Department spokesperson Bianca Hicks. Officers arrived at the scene to find a vehicle parked in the 2000 block of N. Hudson Ave., the driver of which, later identified as Suazo, had been shot and killed. Two other occupants of the vehicle suffered minor injuries, according to a Pueblo PD news release. Police have not yet made any arrests in connection with the case. Police announced April 9 they were seeking the public's help to locate a red 2015 Ford Escape believed to be a suspect vehicle, but Hicks told the Chieftain on April 11 that the vehicle had been located and its registered owners are not suspects in the case. Pueblo PD is asking any witnesses who were present at the time of the shooting or who have additional information to contact Detective Hector Herrera at 719-601-7023, or contact Pueblo Crime Stoppers, 719-542-STOP, to remain anonymous. The homicide was the city of Pueblo's third of 2025, all of which took place in a three-week span: the first homicide took place March 16 and was determined by police to have been a murder-suicide; the second took place April 3, and police arrested 21-year-old Andrew Martinez, charging him with first-degree murder. A total of 20 homicides were recorded in the city of Pueblo in 2024. Pueblo couple killed in apparent murder-suicide identified; police say husband shot wife

Two people found dead in their home following an apparent murder-suicide in Pueblo on March 16 have been identified as a husband and wife. In response to a Colorado Open Records Act request from the Chieftain, the Pueblo County Coroner's Office identified the people killed as Sherri and Gerald Holmes. Sherri Holmes died as a result of gunshot wounds and Gerald Holmes died from a single gunshot wound, according to the coroner's office. Pueblo Police Department spokesperson Bianca Hicks told the Chieftain March 24 that after evaluating evidence, including the placement of gunshot wounds and witness statements, police concluded Gerald Holmes shot and killed Sherri Holmes and then died by suicide. Police were called to the 2200 block of Inspiration Lane just before 8:30 a.m. March 16 on a report of shots fired and set up a perimeter around the home, according to a Pueblo PD news release. The Pueblo SWAT team arrived and entered the home to find Sherri and Gerald Holmes dead. Detectives processed the scene after executing a search warrant and police announced that the deaths would be investigated as a murder-suicide. Pueblo PD's investigation has since concluded, Hicks confirmed to the Chieftain. Sherri Holmes is Pueblo's first homicide victim of 2025. A total of 20 homicides were recorded in the city of Pueblo in 2024. More Pueblo crime news: Is the Colorado Legislature responsible for Pueblo's crime? Pueblo County coroner partners with forensic lab to identify human remains found in 2017

The Pueblo County Coroner's Office and Pueblo Police Department are partnering with the Texas forensic DNA lab Othram to identify a John Doe whose remains were found in 2017, according to a recent news release. The unidentified man's skeletal remains were discovered April 17, 2017. Firefighters with the Pueblo Fire Department were dispatched around 1:35 p.m. that day to Fountain Creek near 800 Gruma Drive on reports of a brush fire, which was found to be near a train bridge over Fountain Creek east of the road. Police said in 2017 that while the blaze was being extinguished, firefighters observed the remains of a body. Pueblo police investigators then responded and confirmed the recovery of skeletal remains. The remains were scorched by the fire, but not destroyed, according to the release. Investigators have determined that the man was an adult with a height between 5 feet 11 inches and 6 feet 3 inches and was either of white or Latino ancestry, according to the release from Othram. No other identifying characteristics were found at the time the remains were discovered. "Othram scientists will work to develop a suitable DNA extract that can be used to develop a comprehensive DNA profile to be used in records research and forensic genetic genealogy," Othram officials said in the release. "People need to know that even though this is an old case, and even though the remains were burned, we have the ability to identify this man," said Othram Chief Development Officer Kristen Mittelman in the release. "Whoever this man was, his family deserves to know what happened to him and we can make that happen." Pueblo County Coroner Brian Cotter also praised the DNA work done by Othram. "The ever-developing and emerging DNA technology is a blessing," Cotter said in the release. "This technology helps us find identity for even our most difficult cases." Othram has begun crowdfunding to cover the cost of the casework. As of Friday, they had raised $873 toward a $7,500 goal. Details of the case have also been entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons system. Anyone with information that could aid the investigation is encouraged to contact the Pueblo County Coroner's Office by calling 719-583-4673 and referencing agency case number 196-2017. Cotter and Othram could not be reached by the Chieftain for further comment on March 7. Renewed effort in Pueblo to identify burned human remains found in 2017

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — A renewed effort in Pueblo is being aided by a forensic DNA lab to help identify the burned remains of a man who was found after a grass fire in Pueblo in 2017. According to previous coverage by our sister station in Denver, FOX31, the burned remains of a man were found in April 2017, after crews had extinguished a fire in a field east of the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk, near Gruma Road. The man's identity has remained unsolved since 2017. PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Skeletal remains found in debris of Pueblo brush fire – FOX31 Now, the Pueblo County Coroner's Office and the Pueblo Police Department have partnered with Othram, a forensic DNA lab near Houston, to identify the man. 'The ever-developing and emerging DNA technology is a blessing,' said Brian Cotter, Pueblo County Coroner. 'This technology helps us to find identity for even our most difficult cases.' According to Othram, investigators determined that the remains had been in the field for an undetermined period of time before the fire. The remains were charred in the fire but not destroyed. 'People need to know that even though this is an old case, and even though the remains were burned, we have the ability to identify this man,' said Kristen Mittelman, Chief Development Officer at Othram. 'Whoever this man was, his family deserves to know what happened to him and we can make that happen.' Investigators have determined the man was an adult who stood between 5'11' and 6'3″ tall, and was of either white or Latino descent. According to Othram, at the time the man's remains were discovered, there were no other identifying characteristics that would help lead investigators toward an identity. After the remains were recovered, details of the case were entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, though no match has ever been made. The new partnership between authorities in Pueblo and Othram will allow DNA testing of the remains to expand the identification efforts. Othram said scientists will work to develop a suitable DNA extract that can be used to develop a comprehensive DNA profile, to be used in records research and forensic genetic genealogy. Anyone with information that could aid in the investigation is encouraged to contact the Pueblo County Coroner's Office by calling 719-583-4673 and referencing agency case number 196-2017.
