Authentic 14y.o. Thai stall set to shutter permanently, owners will leave SG for good
Monkey Thai Seafood, a humble PR-owned hawker stall in Mei Ling Market & Food Centre that has sold authentic Thai cuisine for over 14 years, will be closing for good. On 21 Apr, it was announced on the stall's Facebook page that it would be shutting down permanently on 19 May, with 18 May being its last day. 'We are sincerely thankful for your unwavering support and love… Without you, our dream [would have never been] able to come true,' the notice read. Monkey Thai Seafood was first established on 9 Sep 2010, and its lifetime will be 14 years, 8 months and 9 days when it closes on 19 May. The stall also addressed the unavailability of certain menu items in a separate post, stating that there will no longer be any restocks in the days leading up to the closure. The owners, who go by Ah Pui and Ah Rong, are Singapore Permanent Residents who migrated from Thailand. Pui, who usually runs their social media accounts, confirmed that she and her husband would be revoking their PR status and returning to Thailand after the closure. In response, Monkey Thai Seafood's regulars flooded the comment section with well-wishes and sweet words. While every sentence was tinged with sadness, the commenters also urged them to take good care of themselves and wished them luck on their journey ahead. Some reminisced about their experiences eating at the stall with their families over the years, while others praised the top-notch cooking and the couple's kindness and cheerfulness. In particular, a customer lamented, 'My basil chicken with egg…', to which Pui responded humorously that there were still a few days left for them to savour the dish one last time. If you can, head down to Monkey Thai Seafood before 18 May to bid it farewell and try the authentic Thai fare. Judging by how well-loved and genuine they are, the vendors truly deserve every bit of support they can get before it shuts down permanently. Hong Kong football bosses fighting for unloved trophy that could decide their futures
While speculation persists over the future of the unloved Sapling Cup, the rookie coaches of Lee Man and Southern meeting in Thursday's final could have their long-term futures determined by it. Advertisement For either interim Southern boss Calvin Pui Ho-wang or Lee Man's caretaker manager, Chu Siu-kei, victory at Mong Kok Stadium would deliver the first silverware of their coaching career. Pui stepped up from his assistant role following the resignation of Yeung Ching-kwong in January. 'I never expected it, but when Ching-kwong left, I had no choice but to accept the challenge,' Pui said. 'There was a transition while the players adapted to my coaching and playing styles, and reaching the final is a reward for their hard work, and their belief and trust in me.' He said memories of Southern's 2-0 final win over Lee Man in 2023 – for the club's solitary major honour – would provide a psychological boost, especially for striker Stefan Pereira, 37, who scored both goals in that match.
