Monkey Thai Seafood, a humble PR-owned hawker stall in Mei Ling Market & Food Centre that has sold authentic Thai cuisine for over 14 years, will be closing for good.
On 21 Apr, it was announced on the stall's Facebook page that it would be shutting down permanently on 19 May, with 18 May being its last day. 'We are sincerely thankful for your unwavering support and love… Without you, our dream [would have never been] able to come true,' the notice read.
Monkey Thai Seafood was first established on 9 Sep 2010, and its lifetime will be 14 years, 8 months and 9 days when it closes on 19 May. The stall also addressed the unavailability of certain menu items in a separate post, stating that there will no longer be any restocks in the days leading up to the closure.
The owners, who go by Ah Pui and Ah Rong, are Singapore Permanent Residents who migrated from Thailand. Pui, who usually runs their social media accounts, confirmed that she and her husband would be revoking their PR status and returning to Thailand after the closure.
In response, Monkey Thai Seafood's regulars flooded the comment section with well-wishes and sweet words. While every sentence was tinged with sadness, the commenters also urged them to take good care of themselves and wished them luck on their journey ahead.
Some reminisced about their experiences eating at the stall with their families over the years, while others praised the top-notch cooking and the couple's kindness and cheerfulness. In particular, a customer lamented, 'My basil chicken with egg…', to which Pui responded humorously that there were still a few days left for them to savour the dish one last time.
If you can, head down to Monkey Thai Seafood before 18 May to bid it farewell and try the authentic Thai fare. Judging by how well-loved and genuine they are, the vendors truly deserve every bit of support they can get before it shuts down permanently.

Europe's Rice Noodles Market to Surpass USD 3.85 Billion by 2030: Thai President Foods, Nongshim Co., and Toyo Suisan Kaisha Dominate

The market offers growth opportunities driven by rising demand for gluten-free and health-conscious options, and the popularity of Asian cuisine. Convenience and innovation in products, like organic and pre-cooked noodles, further enhance market potential amidst growing competition from traditional wheat-based options. Dublin, June 06, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The "Europe Rice Noodles Market, By Country, Competition, Forecast & Opportunities, 2020-2030F" has been added to offering. The Europe Rice Noodles Market was valued at USD 2.18 Billion in 2024 and is expected to reach USD 3.86 Billion by 2030, rising at a CAGR of 9.99%. The market is witnessing sustained growth as European consumers increasingly turn to gluten-free and health-conscious dietary options. The popularity of Asian cuisine across urban centers has made rice noodles a sought-after alternative to traditional pasta, particularly among individuals seeking low-calorie and plant-based meals. Convenience-driven demand, fueled by busy lifestyles and a rising preference for ready-to-eat products, is further boosting the market. Leading companies are responding with innovative product offerings, including organic, non-GMO, and pre-cooked rice noodles, aimed at satisfying evolving consumer preferences and expanding their footprint across the continent. Key Market Driver Rising Popularity of Asian Cuisine: The growing appeal of Asian cuisine is a key factor driving the expansion of the Europe rice noodles market. As European consumers explore more global flavors, dishes from Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, and Japanese cuisines have gained mainstream traction. Rice noodles, which are integral to these culinary traditions, have seen increased demand both in foodservice establishments and at-home meal preparation. The proliferation of Asian restaurants, food delivery platforms, and specialty grocery outlets offering authentic ingredients has made rice noodles more accessible than ever. Social media and digital food culture are further popularizing these dishes, with consumers experimenting with Asian recipes, thus embedding rice noodles more firmly into the European dietary landscape. Key Market Challenge Competition from Traditional Wheat-Based Noodles: Despite growing interest in rice noodles, the market faces strong competition from long-established wheat-based noodles and pasta products in Europe. Wheat-based noodles enjoy widespread familiarity, lower pricing, and a vast assortment of options in both shape and culinary application. These factors make it challenging for rice noodles to gain a comparable market share. Price sensitivity remains a concern, especially since rice noodles are often positioned as premium or specialty products. Additionally, cultural preferences and ingrained consumption habits surrounding wheat-based pasta can slow the adoption of rice noodles, particularly in regions where traditional cuisine dominates consumer choice. Key Market Trend Increasing Preference for Gluten-Free and Health-Conscious Foods: The rising demand for gluten-free products across Europe is a prominent trend benefiting the rice noodles market. With increasing awareness of celiac disease, gluten sensitivity, and the broader health movement toward clean eating, rice noodles are gaining favor as a naturally gluten-free, easy-to-digest alternative to wheat-based options. Consumers are also drawn to rice noodles due to their lighter calorie profile and suitability for low-fat or allergen-friendly diets. This shift in preference aligns with a broader wellness trend across Europe, encouraging brands to introduce organic, clean-label, and minimally processed rice noodle offerings to meet the needs of this growing health-conscious segment. Thai military prepared for 'high-level operation' if Cambodia border row escalates

By Juarawee Kittisilpa, Panu Wongcha-um BANGKOK (Reuters) -Thailand's military said it is ready to launch a "high-level operation" to counter any violation of its sovereignty, in the strongest words yet in a simmering border dispute with Cambodia that re-erupted with a deadly clash last week. The army said in a statement late on Thursday that its intelligence gathering indicated Cambodia had stepped up its military readiness at their border while diplomatic efforts were ongoing, describing that as "worrisome". The statement was in sharp contrast with one from the government just hours earlier, when it urged Cambodia to positively engage in dialogue via an existing mechanism between them. "The army is now ready for a high-level military operation in case it is necessary to retaliate against the violation of sovereignty," it said, ahead of a meeting of its armed forces top brass scheduled for Friday. "Operations of units at the border have been conducted carefully, calmly and based on an understanding of the situation to prevent losses on all sides, but at the same time, are ready to defend the country's sovereignty to the fullest extent if the situation is called for." Cambodia's government did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Thai military statement on Friday. The governments of the two countries had for days exchanged carefully worded statements committing to dialogue after a brief skirmish in an undemarcated border area on May 28 in which a Cambodian soldier was killed. Although the two countries have a historic rivalry, their governments enjoy friendly ties, partly due to the close relationship between their influential former leaders, Thailand's Thaksin Shinawatra and Cambodia's Hun Sen, whose daughter and son respectively are now the prime ministers in their countries. The issue comes at a tricky time for the Pheu Thai Party-led administration in Thailand as it battles to revive a flagging economy that could be hit by steep U.S. tariffs, while facing a challenge to its popularity having paused a signature cash handout to tens of millions of people. The party of the billionaire Shinawatra family has a troubled history with the Thai military, which twice toppled its governments in 2006 and 2014 coups. Deadly clashes between Cambodia and Thailand last erupted in 2011 over the Preah Vihear, a 900-year-old temple at the heart of a decades-long row that has stirred nationalist sentiment on both sides. The International Court of Justice in 2013 ruled in favour of Cambodia in clarifying a 1962 decision to award it jurisdiction over the temple, saying part of the land around it was Cambodia's and Thai troops must withdraw from the area. Cambodia said this week it is committed to peace and plans to resolve the issue by referring disputes over four parts of their border to the ICJ and has asked Thailand to cooperate. Thailand says it does not recognise the court's jurisdiction. (Reporting Juarawee Kittisilpa; Writing by Martin Petty; Editing by John Mair)
