Heart patients: PIC Lahore delivers drugs worth Rs130m

LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab's Project for home delivery of medicine to heart patients is successfully in progress and the Punjab Institute of Cardiology, (PIC), Lahore, had delivered medicines worth Rs. 130 million to over 60 thousand heart patients during the last six months. Dr. Muhammad Amir Rafique Butt, Medical Superintendent Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) said on Friday that the patients are being provided with quality medicines free of cost for three months. Medicines are being dispatched to an average of 800 patients daily at their doorstep. The cost of a parcel of medicines is Rs. 2200, he revealed. It may be noted that a special post office has also been set up at the Punjab Institute of Cardiology to deliver medicines to patients' homes. PTI senior leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi was transferred from Kot Lakhpat Jail to Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) on Saturday after suffering chest pain, officials said. The PTI leader was moved to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) shortly after dawn. Qureshi, who has been in custody since August 2023, experienced discomfort following Fajr prayers. Prison doctors conducted an initial assessment, but his condition did not improve, prompting a transfer via Rescue 1122, according to his lawyer, Rana Mudassar.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi was moved to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) shortly after dawn. Qureshi, who has been in custody since August 2023, experienced discomfort following Fajr prayers. Prison doctors conducted an initial assessment, but his condition did not improve, prompting a transfer via Rescue 1122, according to his lawyer, Rana Mudassar. Hospital staff provided immediate medical attention and conducted several diagnostic tests to assess his condition. No further update on his status has been released. The PTI vice-president is facing several charges related to the May 9, 2023 riots. In July 2024, he was indicted by an anti-terrorism court in a case concerning the alleged attack and arson at Shadman police station. Previously held at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, Qureshi was moved to Kot Lakhpat Jail last year due to logistical concerns over frequent court appearances in Lahore. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Provincial Specialised Healthcare Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique has said that departmental action has been taken against all those responsible for the use of expired stents in the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) during 2021-22 as pointed out in a recent report of the auditor general. He said the treatment of each patient at the institute is monitored by the chairman of the board of management, executive director and medical superintendent. They minister stated that the patients area using the treatment facilities with full trust as guaranteed stents are used in the PIC. According to sources, corruption of around Rs260 million was also exposed in the report that stated that the hospital administration had used completed expired and substandard stents during heart surgeries and had avoided submitting a reply about the matter. The sources said corruption in the purchase of surgical instruments and medicines had also been pointed out. A large number of heart patients from across Punjab and other provinces seek treatment in the PIC because of the best available facilities. "According to the auditor general's report, 22 patients were affected by the use of expired stents in 2021 and 2022," an official of the PIC said. He said some officials suspected of being involved in corruption had retired, were some were still serving in the health department. The auditor general had sought a reply about the alleged corruption and mismanagement but it was not submitted. Corruption was allegedly done in the main store of the PIC during the purchase of surgical instruments and medicines, while tampered bills caused loss to the institution. The official said the auditors had thoroughly examined the documents of the patients and the hospital. A health department spokesperson, Sayed Hamad Raza, said it was a follow-up report of the auditor general and the previous government of the PTI was responsible for it.
