Weekly poll results: Huawei Pura 80 Ultra is a hit, no Google services is still a concern
Lack of Google Play Services is still a concern for many, but last week's poll shows that Huawei has not lost its mojo – the new Pura 80 Ultra in particular is a highly desirable phone. That said, it may be out of reach for many, literally or figuratively. The Huawei Pura 80 Ultra received a very warm welcome. If Huawei was still using Google-connected Android, this could have been one of the best selling premium phones of the year. It's not just Google Play access, though. When Huawei was embargoed by the US, it had to shrink its global distribution network and it still hasn't recovered. There was a debate over the overcomplicated telephoto camera – many felt that Huawei could have been clearer about that in its marketing. The camera offers a choice of 3.7x and 9.4x zoom, but it can't do full resolution shots at the longer focal length. The large 1/1.28' 50MP sensor is usable in full at 3.7x, but does a 2x crop when in 9.4x mode, which limits the resolution to 12.5MP. The Huawei Pura 80 Pro and Pro+ differ mainly in the more advanced satellite messaging support for the latter. And yet the Pura 80 Pro+ was the clear favorite between the two – it goes to show that satellite messaging will be an increasingly more important feature going forward. Anyway, neither Pro model was as popular as the Ultra, but they did alright. Finally, the vanilla Huawei Pura 80 got a surprising number of votes – we're used to seeing the vanilla model get the cold shoulder (it does have the advantage of not splitting the votes, unlike the Pro and Pro+). The usual considerations apply for the whole Pura 80 family. Some mentioned that apps like GBox can act as a replacement for Google Play Services and will allow you to run Google apps (and other apps that rely on Google APIs). Still, if any issues occur, you'd be on your own. That applies to warranty too – if you import a Pura 80, repairs and servicing will be difficult. And last but not least, 5G band support is an issue in some regions. Even with all that said, there is a good reason why Huawei was the biggest smartphone maker in the world for a bit. And phones like the Pura 80 family are a good reminder of that. If you are not deterred by the lack of Google services, mark July 10 on your calendar - that is the date of the global launch of the Huawei Mate 80 series. We are not sure whether all four models will be available (the Pro+ is a long shot). Also, we haven't seen any ads in the EU - but fans in South America, Africa and Asia can look forward to the new camera flagships.

Huawei Pura 80 Pro and Pro+ pack 1" 50MP cams and 48MP periscopes, Pura 80 tags along
Huawei has introduced its next generation Pura 80 series – they flaunt 1' sensors, more processing power, bigger batteries, improved satellite communication and more. Note that there are four new models and we will cover the first three here, the Ultra model is discussed in a separate post. The Huawei Pura 80 is the smallest of the family with a flat 6.6' display (1,256 x 2,760px). Advancing battery tech gives this phone 5,600mAh capacity. This is with 66W fast wired and 50W fast wireless charging. Huawei Pura 80 The Huawei Pura 80 Pro and Pura 80 Pro+ have larger 6.8' displays with quad-curved glass (the screens themselves look flat, though). All Pura 80 models have LTPO OLED displays (1-120Hz) with 10-bit colors and second-generation Kunlun Glass. Huawei Pura 80 Pro The Pros also have slightly larger batteries at 5,700mAh. The big upgrade here is the faster charging – 100W wired and 80W wireless. Note that the vanilla model has a USB 2.0 port, the Pro and Pro+ have USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports. Huawei Pura 80 Pro+ Huawei doesn't say what chipsets are used in the Pura 80 series, only claiming that the Ark Engine in the Pro and Pro+ makes them 36% faster than their predecessors. The vanilla and Pro models have 12GB of RAM and 256GB/512GB/1TB storage. The Pro+ has 16GB of RAM and skips the 256GB storage variant, offering only 512GB and 1TB instead. Huawei Pura 80 Pro and Pro+: 6.8' 1-120Hz LTPO displays • 5,700mAh batteries with 100W/80W charging The camera setup is where it gets good. The vanilla Pura 80 has a 50MP main with a variable f/1.4-f/4.0 aperture and OIS (sensor size unknown). There is also a 12MP periscope with 5.5x zoom/125mm focal length and an f/3.4 lens with OIS. Also on the back are a 13MP ultra-wide camera (13mm) and a 1.5MP multi-channel spectrum sensor. The selfie camera is the same on all Pura 80 models – a 13MP sensor behind an ultra-wide f/2.0 lens with autofocus. The Huawei Pura 80 Pro and Pro+ have 1' 50MP main cameras (f/1.6-f/4.0 variable aperture, OIS). The telephoto camera is also upgraded with a higher resolution sensor at 48MP and a slightly shorter 4x/93mm lens with a wider f/2.1 aperture and tele-macro capabilities (and OIS, of course). The ultra-wide camera is upgraded to a 40MP sensor (13mm lens) and the 1.5MP spectrum sensor is also on board. 1' 50MP cameras on the Huawei Pura 80 Pro and Pro+ Huawei has upgraded the satellite messaging capabilities of the Pura phones. The Pura 80 and 80 Pro support the Beidou constellation – they can send and receive messages, but they can also send photos! The Beidou system can also send news and alerts in case of emergency. The Huawei Pura 80 Pro+ supports dual satellite communication – Beidou and Tiantong. Interestingly, the phone can remain connected to a satellite without you having to actively point it at the satellite. Two-way satellite communication • AI assisted photo composition Other connectivity options include Wi-Fi 7 (be) at 2.4GHz and 5GHz, Bluetooth 5.2 (LDAC, L2HC), NFC and NearLink (aka SparkLink), which is a Huawei-led effort to develop an alternative to Bluetooth. The phones are rated IP68 for submersion (up to 2m) and IP69 for high-temperature water jets. The Huawei Pura 80 Pro and Pro+ are available in China starting today – we have listed the prices of the various storage tiers below, plus a conversion to USD.
