Trimmier Elementary celebrates military children
KILLEEN, Texas (FOX 44) – A group of 45 Trimmier Elementary School students ranging from first to fifth grade gathered in the school cafeteria earlier this week – the only thing they have in common is a close family tie to the military. The Killeen Independent School District says counselors put together a very personal Purple Up celebration to wrap up the Month of the Military Child. The children were told that because their moms, dads or other family members serve – they also serve. According to Trimmier Elementary School counselors, the dandelion is the official symbol of the military child because it is a sturdy plant which can take root almost anywhere and its spores float on the wind, carrying it near and far. The resilient dandelion thrives in almost any climate. The district says before the students took part in three activity stations, many of them shared some aspect of their military background. Some shared places they have lived or are going and explained their mom or dad's deployments, both short and long. Some also said their parent has retired or is soon to retire from service. The students wrote notes to deliver to soldiers in Trimmier Elementary School's adopt-a-school unit. They also colored pictures, did a word hunt and made a paper bowl helmet. The district says Principal Beckie Avery told the students she also grew up in a military family – her father and her husband were in the military. It's a special and unique experience, something to celebrate, she said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Indian River reveals new Wolves mascot and logos More than 70 soldiers from Fort Drum lined the sidewalk outside Calcium Primary School to welcome students as they got off the bus on Tuesday, April 15. Calcium students received purple leis in honor of Purple Up Day. Service members and their families enjoyed a special moment together before the children went into school for the day. Afterward, the service members went inside for a light breakfast and encouraging words from IRCSD Superintendent Troy Decker. You've got our backs wherever you happen to be, domestically or across the globe in some fashion. While you're doing that, we've got your back right here with your kids. Indian River Central School District Superintendent Troy Decker Theresa Primary School invited service members with children attending the school for a lunchtime Purple Up event on Tuesday that included coloring and activities, purple cookies, and a short video of students describing why they love being a military kid. Theresa Principal Brenda Leddy led the event with a thanks to families and celebration of their military families. Antwerp Primary School held a special surprise for its students on Thursday, April 17. A Blackhawk helicopter flew past classroom windows and landed in the playground field. Piloted by the father of Antwerp second-grader Ian, the helicopter was open for students to climb inside, and the crew answered questions about the aircraft, their missions, and the best parts of being an Army aviator. Month of the Military Child events at IRCSD have provided many meaningful moments of gratitude and celebration for military students, their families, and everyone in the community. The recognition highlighted the district's appreciation for military families and the unique role their children play in the community. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
