The 15 Best Films From Cannes 2025
Hello! I'm Esther Zuckerman, a film critic for Pursuits, and I've just spent about two weeks at the Cannes Film Festival, which ends tonight. So what does that mean? Well, I saw more than 30 films in the lineup (including some pre-screenings back at home in New York), I drank a lot of rosé, I went to a bunch of beach parties, and I have a lot of opinions. Cannes is a festival known for its impossible glamour. After all, the premieres are black-tie affairs with strict dress codes. (This year nudity and volume were banned.) Meanwhile, anywhere you look on the Croisette you might see a celebrity. I never caught sight of Charli XCX, but she was bouncing around and chronicling her opinions on Letterboxd. I did spot Jason Momoa walking down the street, and he was massive. But for all the silliness outside the venues, inside the movies are typically extreme and intense.

The Delight of Being a Tourist in Rome During the Conclave
Hello, Sarah Rappaport from Pursuits here! I'm originally from Chicago, and when I travel, that fact has historically prompted responses such as 'Oh, like Michael Jordan?' Or 'Like Barack Obama?' But last week, when I was in Rome, I got a new one. 'Chicago! Like our new pope,' a bartender said to me, stunned that for the first time an American— Robert Francis Prevost, now known as Pope Leo XIV —had become the head of the Catholic Church. I was visiting the Eternal City ahead of a voyage on the new La Dolce Vita Orient Express, an ultra-luxury train (more on that soon), but my trip had coincided with the start of the conclave, the process by which the Catholic Church's cardinals elect a new pope. Luckily, this was my fifth trip to Rome, so I wasn't in a rush to see all the sights; instead I could just take in the city during such a historic moment.

Our Film Critic Picks Her Winners for Best Picture, Actress
Hello! I'm Esther Zuckerman, and I write about movies for Pursuits. Which means I watch a lot of them. In 2024, for instance, I watched 220 new movies. The Oscars are tomorrow and that means I'll finally have answers to questions I've been thinking about for the last nine months. Yes, I start thinking about awards season as early as May, around the time of the Cannes Film Festival, which I typically attend. Last year's installment of the glitzy affair in the South of France was where I first saw some of this year's major contenders including Anora, The Substance and Emilia Pérez. At that point if you'd asked me which of those would be nominated for top prizes I would have definitely said Anora —which blew me away and took home the Palme d'Or—and argued there's no way that the Oscars would go for The Substance considering how absolutely gross it is.

How Trump May Change American Travel, Again
Hello, dear readers! It's Lily Girma, your Pursuits travel news correspondent in charge of all things responsible tourism. Next week, I'll be celebrating my birthday in Canada, where I plan to blend work and family time. First, I'll be speaking at the annual Impact Sustainability Travel & Tourism Summit in British Columbia and rubbing elbows with all sorts of professionals who use tourism as a tool for positive social and environmental change. Afterward it's on to Ontario, where my family and I will likely drive to Niagara Falls and also have a celebratory dinner at a Caribbean restaurant in Toronto that my brother says is one of the best in the city. I'll report back!
