Bargain Hunt Mark Stacey's major bowel cancer surgery and life off the screen
The antiques specialist had a bowel cancer tumour surgically removed. Bargain Hunt favourite Mark Stacey is a familiar face for antiques fans. As well as his long-standing slot on the BBC show, he has also regularly shared his expertise on Flog It!, Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is, and Antiques Road Trip over the years. But much of his life off the screen remains unknown. Mark became fascinated with antiques as a child, when he began collecting stamps and coins. This passion evolved over time, and he began to collect small silver items and artworks, which paved the way for his career in antiques trading. The 60-year-old joined the Bargain Hunt team back in 2002 after responding to an ad in the Antiques Trade Gazette. His screen test was a triumph, securing his long-time spot on the programme. But it hasn't all been smooth sailing, as the star underwent major surgery in 2023, seeing an influx of fan support. Following the surgery to remove a bowel cancer tumour, he received an outpouring of support from fans when he shared a post-hospital photo, reported Liverpool Echo. In the post online, he said: "Thanks to Lincoln Country Hospital, had a bowel cancer tumour removed to robotics on Thursday, this pic on Friday morning." He added: "Our NHS is amazing, we must protect it." Reflecting on his career, the star said: "I don't think I could do anything other than what I do know. If I had to have a change of career, I am sure it would be something creative." He also noted the evolution of the antiques trade, offering an insight for those considering a career in the industry. He said: "The antiques trade is changing fast for anyone wanting to get into it. "It offers great fun, excitement and very little money, as a dealer that is, but you get to meet a wonderful array of eccentric people who have passion and many stories, some may even be true, but first and foremost you must research and handle lots of things and be prepared to make a loss - this is how you learn." In other Bargain Hunt news, a guest on the show was recently left in bits after finding out that the item they brought had sold for over '100 times its value.' Bargain Hunt star Irita Marriott was hosting her Discovery+ series, The Derbyshire Auction House, when she discovered a heartfelt story with guest Helen and her son Ben. While scouring their home for hidden gems, Helen presented a set of family snaps which contained original signed shots from acclaimed photographers that dated back to 1975. They included works from Graham Smith and Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen, whose pieces are now displayed in the Tate Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum. In a heartbreaking twist, it was unveiled that the photos were being auctioned to help fund the care of Helen's husband, Alan. Alan was suffering from dementia at the time and required full time care. However, he sadly passed away before the episode aired with the money being used towards his funeral. BBC Bargain Hunt's Eric Knowles' life off-screen with tragic loss
Eric Knowles has become a familiar face on our TV screens thanks to his passion for antiques but away from the cameras, the BBC star has faced tragedy following the death of his son Eric Knowles has established himself as a familiar face in the antiques sphere, with a genuine love for ceramics that's impossible to miss. The television personality initially rose to prominence on Antiques Roadshow during the 1980s, before securing spots on Bargain Hunt, 20th Century Roadshow and Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is. Hailing from Nelson in Lancashire, Eric's journey into antiques began well before his television breakthrough. In 1976, he started at London auction house Bonhams as a porter in their ceramics section and swiftly climbed the ladder to become department head by 1981. However, his fascination with antiques wasn't always there, and it was an unexpected redundancy in the 1970s that ignited his passion for the field. He credits his career path to being "largely a matter of fate and circumstance" after losing his engineering position in Lancashire. Following this significant career transformation, he progressed through the ranks at Bonhams Auction House's ceramics division, before moving to Dreweatts and Bloomsbury in 2013, and subsequently accepting the executive chairman position at The Hoard in 2019. He explained: "My career in antiques was largely a matter of fate and circumstance that saw my interest in history and architecture lead me out of redundancy with an engineering company up in my native Lancashire to a job in London as a porter at Bonhams auction house. I was to stay with the company for the next 32 years. Working for an auction house guarantees that no two days are ever the same", reports the Liverpool Echo. When he first dipped his toes into the world of television back in the 1980s, Eric had no inkling that BBC's Antiques Roadshow would become such an enduring hit. Reflecting on his early days, he remarked: "When I started doing it I thought this could run for two to three years. I never thought it would be for 27 years. It is a formula that seems to work. It is always the BBC's most popular factual programme." His natural flair in front of the camera opened doors to other daytime TV gigs like Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is and 20th Century Roadshow. Eric even took on the role of guest presenter on Bargain Hunt, where he helped the red and blue teams try to turn a profit from their antique purchases. Outside of his professional life, Eric enjoys family time with his wife Anita and their two sons, Seb and Oliver. However, tragedy struck when Seb was involved in a fatal road accident on the M40 in Buckinghamshire in May 2015. At just 26-years-old, Seb's life was cut short after his vehicle collided with a lorry. Seb, who was a DJ, received an outpouring of touching tributes following his untimely death. The National Association of Disc Jockeys (NADJ) posted on Facebook: "All of us at NADJ would like to send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Seb Knowles (DJ Sparky B) who tragically died earlier today." They added: "It's always a tragedy when someone is taken so young. He was a talented DJ who will be missed by all who knew him." Eric's spouse, Anita, serves as the company secretary for their joint venture, Eric Knowles Antiquarian Services Limited. The pair reside in their Buckinghamshire abode. The telly personality devotes time to backing a variety of charities such as Headway, FABLE (For a better life with epilepsy), the New Mozart Orchestra, and Wycombe Scanappeal. He also holds the title of Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and acts as an Ambassador for the Prince's Trust.

Bargain Hunt star Ochuko Ojiri charged with terrorist financing in Met probe
Bargain Hunt and Antiques Road Trip star Ochuko Ojiri has been charged with terrorist financing following a Met Police investigation. Ojiri, 53, who has been a regular on the BBC shows for several years, faces eight counts of failing to make a disclosure during the course of business within the regulated sector, contrary to section 21A of the Terrorism Act 2000. Met Police confirmed he is the first person to be charged with the specific offence, relating to a period from October 2020 to December 2021. The force said they were authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service following an investigation into terrorist financing by officers from the Met's National Terrorist Financial Investigation Unit. The Treasury, HMRC and the Met's Arts & Antiques Unit were all also involved in the probe. Ojiri first appeared on screens in the BBC show Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is, before becoming a regular on BBC One's Bargain Hunt. Away from the cameras, Ojiri leads a private life, and is an avid collector of contemporary art and helped launch the London-based Ramp Gallery which champions emerging artists. The art dealer was previously the owner of an art gallery and vintage shop called Pelicans and Parrots in Dalston, dubbed 'the coolest place in London'. The store sold contemporary furniture, curated houseware and gifts, specialising in Italian vintage, before it was closed in 2021. Speaking to the BBC previously, Ojiri said he enjoyed 'eating pastries and drinking red wine' in his free time, noting his best antique find was a box of Victorian china dolls. Ojiri, of west London, will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Friday. This is a developing story, more to follow.
