K-pop songs with a ‘French touch'? How new songwriting camp brought 2 countries together

By Pyo Kyung-min Advertisement What happens when Korean precision meets French flair in the music studio? The answer played out in Seoul, where the first-ever 'Atelier K-pop' songwriting camp brought together music professionals from both countries for six days of creative collaboration. The camp, which ran from March 24 to March 29, marked a rare partnership between the French government and top K-pop publishing players, including Leeway Music & Media, Amplified and JYP Publishing. Jointly organised by the Embassy of France in Korea and the Centre National de la Musique (CNM), the initiative brought four French composers – Poppy Fusée, Jean-Noël, Robin Peret and Ugo – to Seoul for a deep dive into K-pop's unique production process.

ExtraL, Mantra singles by Blackpink's Jennie spark feminism debate in South Korea

By Pyo Kyung-min Advertisement Few things hit harder than a song packed with confidence and self-affirmation. Add a message of female empowerment and solidarity, and it becomes more than music – it is a statement. Only a handful of K-pop artists are currently conveying this message, one of the most prominent being Blackpink's Jennie. ‘Extremely risky' for NJZ, formerly NewJeans, to pursue new direction

Published: 7:15pm, 14 Feb 2025 By Pyo Kyung-min Marking their departure from their agency and the start of independent activities, members of K-pop group NewJeans have rebranded as NJZ, a move that adds new complexity to their ongoing legal battle with Hybe Labels' subsidiary Ador. While entertainment and legal professionals are hesitant to paint a rosy picture for NJZ, the five members – Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin and Hyein – show no signs of looking back. The group announced they would debut new music at ComplexCon Hong Kong, in March, under their name new NJZ.
