Four people hurt after fireworks unexpectedly explode at Cape Cod golf course

One person was seriously injured, and three others were burned after a fireworks display prematurely exploded at a country club in Cape Cod on Wednesday. The four people were crew members of Pyrotecnico, the fireworks company responsible for the display, which was supposed to be set off later that night at the New Seabury Country Club in Mashpee at 9 p.m. However, around 4:30 p.m., a firework shell ignited, setting off the fireworks on the ground, in a massive, smoky explosion that could be seen for miles, WCVB reports. One person was seriously injured with non-life-threatening injuries and airlifted to Rhode Island Hospital, while another had minor injuries and was taken to Falmouth Hospital. Six others were evaluated, with two treated at the scene and the rest declining further hospital treatment. "Due to this incident, we unfortunately have to cancel the Fireworks portion of tonight's Event while the situation is handled," Jim Clay, the general manager of the country club said in an email to members. "The BBQ and Kid's Activities are still on. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and are focused on the injured person and the safety of everyone involved." "Our crew was assembling the annual fireworks display when a fireworks shell ignited. This ignited the cases that were on the ground," the fireworks company, Pyrotecnico said in a statement Wednesday night. "The State Fire Marshal's office, who had just inspected the crew, are currently investigating the incident." The incident remains under investigation, but the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services said it appears accidental. Brian Jadul told the WCVB that he saw the explosion from the golf course clubhouse and watched as workers ran for their lives. "When the explosion was happening, I saw some of the workers sprinting away from the scene as fast as they could," Jadul said. "Some of them started screaming, so I'm assuming they saw colleagues injured." Another woman, Tabiuntha Carthy, also watched it happen. "It literally was just like boom, boom, boom. I realized something is really not right," Carthy said. "My heart immediately was like Oh my God, these poor people, whoever was there."

Fireworks designer Matt Shea orchestrates the skies over the Boston Pops July 4th celebration

Last week, Shea was in Somerville setting up the first of many displays of the season. If Boston's Fourth 'is the matriarch of fireworks shows,' he said, 'think of this as a baby brother.' Danielle Parhizkaran/Globe Staff How he started : In 1991, Shea helped Steve Pelkey of 'I started doing what a lot of the people who work for me today do,' Shea said. 'They're part-time hobbyists. They get paid. It's a part-time job for them.' In 1998 he joined Pelkey's company. 'Pyromusicals were new, and I started working with clients on their music. Then it became understanding the scripting side,' Shea said. 'I fell into the design part just because I was on the ground floor.' Advertisement Pelkey sold the company to Pyrotecnico in 2022. Danielle Parhizkaran/Globe Staff What he makes : 'We design oohs and ahhs,' Shea said. Materials : Firework shells are humble-looking paper packages handmade in China. 'A shell is basically a papier-mâché ball,' said Shea. 'Inside of it are what we call stars. They're black powder that's mixed with different metal salts to create the different colors.' 'They're kind of like little Everlasting Gobstoppers,' he said. Shells holding fireworks are loaded into mortars as the fireworks company Pyrotecnico prepares for a show. Danielle Parhizkaran/Globe Staff How he works : To prep, Shea revisits last year's show. 'I watch the commands, the cues, the types of fireworks I used, and the sequences,' he said. Then he goes to work on the new one. After about 100hours, 'I submit it to my team. The team builds it, puts it in boxes, packages it, and it sits in our magazine.' In late June, he confirms the music is in place. 'Then I spend probably about eight hours uninterrupted, and I just clean it up, clean it up, clean it up.' This week, the barges go in the water Monday. It takes a couple of days to load shells into mortars, and Shea's team leaves wiggle room. 'We always want to make sure we have the 3rd of July, and we're 100% ready to go,' he said. Ash from Bunker Hill fireworks damages boats at Charlestown Navy Yard, owners say

Marino said he headed to the docks Wednesday afternoon after Charlestown Marina sent an email to boaters warning that 'ash and fireworks debris' had settled 'on and around the vessels in the marina.' 'We recommend checking your boat and rinsing off any visible debris to prevent staining,' read the message, which went out to customers around 12:15 p.m. Wednesday. Advertisement Marino said some of the ash had 'ground in' and 'burned' the surface of his 41-foot Rampage Express, a vessel he's currently trying to sell. Despite power-washing the boat, he said the damage is permanent and will require professional repairs. In an email to the Globe on Friday, Matt Shea, northeast regional manager of Pyrotecnico, the national fireworks company responsible for Tuesday's display, said the event had the proper permits and was launched from a designated safety zone that 'exceeded the Commonwealth's requirements.' He added that members of the Boston Harbor patrol and fire department were present during the show. 'Unfortunately, the following day, it was discovered there was ash on several boats, possibly due to upper-level winds,' Shea said. 'The debris apparently was not observed by bystanders during the show. Our team is currently working with the affected boat owners to address their damaged vessels.' Advertisement The Boston Fire Department also confirmed to the Globe that they issued a permit for the fireworks display but said they had not received any complaints related to the fallout. Marino, the boat owner, said he had 'never' had problems like this before. 'And there's fireworks going off in Boston Harbor all the time,' he said. Another boater, Sylvain Theroux, said the boats in his section were 'totally covered' in ash, including his 32-foot Galeon 325 GTO, which is less than a month old. 'We just want someone to pay for it,' he said. Rita Chandler can be reached at
