Rumored ‘Red Flags' About Cleveland Browns QB Is Good News for Shedeur Sanders

A new report has revealed some internal concerns about third-round pick Dillon Gabriel. And that is very good news for fellow rookie quarterback . One of the biggest stories in the NFL this summer is the ongoing QB battle in Browns camp. The team has four different QBs vying for three spots, and two of them are players they drafted in April. Many fans want to see fifth-round pick Shedeur Sanders win a prominent role. But the team has an affinity for third-rounder Dillon Gabriel With Sanders dealing with an oblique injury, he is not expected to play in their second preseason game this weekend. Opening the door for Gabriel to prove he is deserving of being higher on the depth chart. However, ahead of their game against the Eagles on Saturday, a new report reveals some growing 'concerns' the coaching staff has about Gabriel. 'There is concern about Gabriel's ability to lead the team on Sundays. And the overall belief is the starting job will land in the lap of Joe Flacco,' Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda reports. 'The red flag on Gabriel is the propensity to leave the pocket and throw on the move. Something he had success with in college at Oklahoma and Oregon. 'Sources at practice tell me it seems as though Gabriel is purposely looking to leave the pocket. Despite the design of the play, and that's not a good thing.' There have already been concerns that the Browns wasted a third-round pick on Gabriel. He has been dealing with a hamstring injury recently, and that kept him off the field in their preseason opener last week. If he does start on Saturday, he will get the chance to quiet the doubters. And change opinions inside the Browns facility. However, a poor performance will only make the push from fans for Sanders to be above him in the depth chart grow stronger. Ohio State football's Lincoln Kienholz reveals advantage in intense QB battle

The post Ohio State football's Lincoln Kienholz reveals advantage in intense QB battle appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Ohio State football program is gearing up for one of its most intriguing quarterback battles in recent memory, with redshirt sophomore Lincoln Kienholz and Alabama transfer Julian Sayin locked in a neck-and-neck race. As the Buckeyes prepare to defend their 2025 College Football Playoff national championship, all eyes are on the quarterback competition—and Kienholz has pointed to his multi-sport athletic background as a unique edge. Both Kienholz and Sayin have impressed during fall camp, with a final decision on the starting job expected just weeks before the season opener. Kienholz's story stands out in the world of Buckeyes football. As Patrick Murphy of 247Sports noted, the 19-year-old quarterback spent his high school days at T.F. Riggs in Pierre, South Dakota, excelling in football, basketball, and baseball. Murphy highlighted that Kienholz developed into a Major League Baseball prospect, starred as an all-state basketball player, and produced eye-popping numbers on the football field—nearly 8,000 passing yards, 2,844 rushing yards, and 26 touchdowns during his prep career. That versatility helped Kienholz earn four-star status and become the No. 11 quarterback in the 2023 class according to 247Sports. In Murphy's article, Kienholz himself described how those experiences have helped him adapt and compete at the highest level. 'Just being an athlete helps, first and foremost,' Kienholz said. 'Playing basketball, baseball, football. I think that helped me kind of get to the position I'm at right now.' This multi-sport foundation gives Kienholz a distinct edge in the Buckeyes' quarterback battle. Sayin, a five-star recruit and redshirt freshman celebrated for his arm talent, has been in Columbus for about a year and a half after transferring from Alabama following the surprise retirement of legendary Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban in early 2024. While Sayin's natural throwing ability has turned heads in camp, Kienholz's athleticism and improvisational skills have kept the race extremely close. In terms of experience, the redshirt sophomore has been in the Ohio State football program longer, but Sayin actually holds a slight edge in game action—having played in four games and taken 27 snaps at Alabama, compared to Kienholz's single college appearance in the 2023 Cotton Bowl after starter Devin Brown was injured. As Brian Hartline prepares to call plays for the Ohio State offense for the first time in 2025 after splitting duties with Chip Kelly last season, the system now places a premium on mobility, quick decision-making, and run-pass option execution—all areas where Kienholz's multi-sport background gives him an opportunity to shine. The competition between Kienholz and Sayin is as intense as any in college football, with Day and quarterback coach Billy Fessler both praising Kienholz's growth in leadership and command of the offense. While Sayin's deep-ball accuracy and poise stand out, the three-sport phenom's dual-threat capability and physical development—including a 33-pound increase since enrolling—make him an ideal fit for Hartline's offense. As Ohio State closes in on a highly anticipated season opener against the preseason No. 1 Texas Longhorns on August 30th, the outcome of this quarterback duel could have a major implications on both the Buckeyes' Big Ten title chances and their hopes of repeating as national champions. The coming weeks will be a proving ground for both quarterbacks, but Kienholz's athletic versatility, system experience, and leadership may give him the edge as Ohio State looks to go on another playoff run. Dylan Lonergan Named Starting Quarterback for Boston College Football

On Tuesday morning, ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that Alabama transfer Dylan Lonergan has won the Boston College starting QB battle over Grayson James. Lonergan is a redshirt sophomore this season and was a 4-star recruit out of high school, hailing from Snellville, GA. His play-style fits the Bill O'Brien offense well. The 6'2' quarterback has terrific arm strength, a penchant for standing tall in the pocket despite facing pressure, and does a great job of taking care of the ball. His high completion percentage and low INT numbers in high school are a great sign for guy who could run a pro-style offense here at Boston College, especially considering he was a winning player that led his high school team to multiple deep playoff runs. He is not considered a dual-threat, but can improvise when called upon and ran the ball in for several rushing TDs before he went to Alabama. Lonergan got stuck behind some talented players on the Crimson Tide roster and has only seen the field in college three times, throwing 7/8 passes for 35 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions. O'Brien worked with Lonergan when he was the offensive coordinator at Alabama and clearly liked what he saw, utilizing that relationship to bring him to the Heights. Redshirt senior Grayson James played well last season when he took over for Thomas Castellanos, throwing for 1,202 yards, 6 TDs, and 2 INTs in six games. He was more of a fit for BoB's offense than Tommy Touchdowns was, but still struggled at times to move the ball downfield. O'Brien has mentioned previously that both quarterbacks will have playing time this season, but that one will be the definitive starter. It looks like Lonergan will be that primary option.

Kalen DeBoer Makes Major Announcement on Alabama's QB Battle

Kalen DeBoer Makes Major Announcement on Alabama's QB Battle originally appeared on Athlon Sports. A handful of the biggest college football programs in the country have yet to name a quarterback as the 2025 season approaches. Among those trying to find their answer at quarterback are the Ohio State Buckeyes, Michigan Wolverines, Colorado Buffaloes and Alabama Crimson Tide. While all of these schools are hoping that a superstar will emerge when the dust settles, Kalen DeBoer's Crimson Tide program need it the most. After posting the program's worst record (9-4) since 2007, the Crimson Tide had three contenders emerge for the starting gig to replace Jalen Milroe. While Austin Mack has the most familiarity with the system, having played under DeBoer at Washington, and Keelon Russell has the most hype as the program's highest-ranked quarterback recruit ever, Ty Simpson has been viewed as the favorite. Something that DeBoer confirmed when making an appearance on "SEC Now" at SEC media days. "If we played today, you know he (Simpson) would be the starter," DeBoer said. " We announced that kind of after the spring. Nothing's really changed since then. He's done a great job of continuing to grow himself." Simpson has been waiting his turn for three seasons now, serving as the backup for Milroe for the past two, and being third on the depth chart behind Milroe and Bryce Young in 2022. In his limited showings, the former five-star has completed 16-of-29 passes for 381 yards. While it's rare for a quarterback to wait his turn to be the starter these days, Simpson's patience may have paid off in a big story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 16, 2025, where it first appeared.
