Kazma bolsters squad with Al-Saad signing
KUWAIT CITY, Aug 5: Kazma officially signed Fahad Saad Al-Saad from Qadsiya to strengthen its first volleyball team ahead of the new season. This move follows Kazma's renewal of Brazilian coach Cacaratto's contract and the addition of Brazilian professional Costa, as the club looks to build a competitive squad for the upcoming season. Meanwhile, with the conclusion of the previous volleyball season, several players have parted ways with their clubs. Notably, Jasem Al-Sabbagh — a standout player — has ended his stint with Kuwait Club after four successful seasons in which he helped secure several domestic titles. Al-Sabbagh is currently reviewing multiple offers from local clubs as he considers his next move. In a similar development, setter Abdullah Al-Assaf has ended his contract with Al-Shabab Club, making him a free agent. Given his strong reputation in the setter position, several local teams are expected to compete for his signature in the coming days. Additionally, Mohammad Al-Ali has also terminated his contract with Salibikhat Club. On the national front, Kuwait's junior national volleyball team opened its training camp in Egypt with an impressive 3-0 victory over the Egyptian junior team in their first friendly match. The camp is part of preparations for the 17th Arab Junior Volleyball Championship, scheduled to take place in Jordan from August 14 to 26. Kuwait was drawn into Group B alongside Bahrain, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq. Group A comprises Egypt, the UAE, Libya, Lebanon, and the host nation, Jordan. The team is led by national coach Mohammad Abdulrazzaq, with assistant coach Mishal Al-Subti.

Kuwait SC clinch 15th Handball Federation Cup
Salmiya bag bronze after beating Kazma in high-tempo third-place match KUWAIT: In a thrilling end to the local handball season, Kuwait SC snatched a dramatic 30-29 victory over Qadsiya in the final of the 2024–2025 Kuwait Handball Federation Cup, claiming the title for the 15th time in its history — and for the 12th consecutive season. The final showdown, held at Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Indoor Sports Hall, drew a packed crowd and delivered action from the very first seconds. Both teams came out strong, exchanging goals rapidly and matching each other's energy, leaving the first half deadlocked at 18-18. The second half started off tight, with neither team able to break the silence for six full minutes — a testament to the intensity of the match. Qadsiya finally found the net, sparking a fresh wave of goals from both sides. But as the clock ticked down to the final second, Kuwait edged ahead by a single goal to seal the title. 'This win didn't come out of nowhere,' said Kuwait SC Chairman Khaled Al-Ghanim after the match. 'It's the result of strong teamwork that made our club a force on the local scene, consistently lifting trophies like today's Handball Federation Cup.' He credited the club's ongoing success to the combined efforts of its players, staff, and fans, describing the supporters as 'the strongest and most important part of our journey.' Al-Ghanim also thanked Minister of Information and Culture and Minister of State for Youth Affairs Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi for his support of Kuwaiti sports and for highlighting local achievements through media coverage. He also praised Qadsiya for their strong performance and sportsmanship. In the third-place playoff, Salmiya defeated Kazma 34-28 in a fast-paced game. Salmiya led narrowly at halftime (15-13), and while Kazma mounted a comeback early in the second half, unforced errors saw them fall behind again, allowing Salmiya to secure the bronze. As the curtain falls on the 2024–2025 handball season, national team manager Abdulaziz Al-Zaabi reflected on what he called one of the longest seasons in Kuwaiti handball history. 'The repeated pauses for international duties and other interruptions drained the competition's momentum,' he told KUNA. 'Players struggled with fitness and mental fatigue.' Al-Zaabi pointed out that the league format also contributed to the issue. 'The competition essentially ended after the first phase of the Premier League, which made the rest of the season feel like a formality. The federation has taken note and plans changes next season.' Looking ahead, he emphasized a renewed focus on developing local talent. 'Clubs are increasingly prioritizing youth players and giving them real playing time,' he said. 'This will give the national team more depth — especially with the upcoming Asian Championship, which Kuwait will host.' — KUNA

Qadsiya eyes redemption in Gulf Champions League final
KUWAIT CITY, April 7: Qadsiya will look to bounce back from their early exit in the Zain Premier League title race by securing a strong result in the first leg of the Gulf Champions League final against Iraq's Duhok, scheduled for 7:45 pm tonight at Mohammed Al-Hamad Stadium. The "Yellow Castle" fans are eager to see their team take a crucial step toward lifting its third Gulf title, having previously won the championship in 2000 and 2005. The players, too, are determined to deliver a memorable result to compensate for their domestic disappointment. Qadsiya reached the final by finishing second in Group B with nine points, earning two wins, three draws, and a loss. In the semifinals, it edged past the UAE's Al-Nasr 1-0 in the first leg and lost 2-1 in the return leg before clinching a 4-3 win on penalties. In preparation for the final, Montenegrin head coach Zeljko Petrovic opted to rest key starters in last Friday's league clash against Al-Salmiya. The squad then entered a focused training camp ahead of tonight's crucial encounter. Despite missing Moroccan midfielders Mehdi Berrahma and Moaz Al-Dhafiri due to suspension from accumulated yellow cards, Qadsiya is expected to benefit from the return of several players. Khaled Ibrahim, Ismail Khafi, Abdulaziz Wadi, Abdullah Mutawa, and Adhbi Shehab, all of whom missed recent fixtures, are likely to feature. Meanwhile, Duhok is aiming to continue its impressive run in the tournament as it chases its first-ever Gulf Champions League title. The Iraqi side advanced to the final after finishing second in Group A with nine points, behind UAE's Al-Nasr. In the semifinals, Duhok stunned Saudi Arabia's Al-Ettifaq with back-to-back 1-0 victories. Domestically, Duhok has been in strong form, most recently defeating league leader Al-Zawraa in the Iraqi Premier League. Although currently in seventh place, it remains in contention with five games in hand and only 12 points separating them from the top. Showing its intent, Duhok arrived in Kuwait on a private jet with a 70-member delegation, including seven media representatives. To avoid scheduling conflicts, it held its training sessions at Sabah Al-Salem Stadium rather than Mohammed Al-Hamad Stadium. The match will be officiated by a Saudi crew led by referee Majed Al-Shamrani, with assistants Hisham Al-Rifai and Omar Al-Jamal. Shukri Al-Hanfoush will serve as the fourth official. Emirati officials Saqr Al-Zaabi and Yasser Al-Marshadi will operate the VAR system.

Petrovic to stay on as Qadsiya cements third-place finish in Zain Premier League
KUWAIT CITY, March 29: Montenegrin coach Zeljko Petrovic is on the verge of renewing his contract with Qadsiya for another season. Recent discussions between both parties have resulted in an agreement on most terms, reflecting the club's satisfaction with his leadership. Under Petrovic's guidance, Qadsiya has made a strong impact, securing a spot in the Gulf Champions League final, where it will face Iraq's Duhok in a two-legged tie in early April. The team also holds third place in the Zain Premier League. Qadisiya closed out its Zain Premier League campaign with a 2-1 win over Khaitan in the 18th and final round, cementing its third-place finish with 37 points. Meanwhile, Khaitan remains in ninth place with 11 points. Despite its efforts, Khaitan failed to secure a crucial point before heading into the relegation playoff battle, where it must overtake Al-Nasr (12 points) to retain its Premier League status. With little time to rest, Qadsiya has already shifted focus to three crucial competitions: Crown Prince Cup Preliminary Round – It will be facing Al-Nasr tomorrow in a postponed fixture. Championship League (Top Six League) – Opening against Al-Fahaheel on Friday. Gulf Champions League Final – Hosting Duhok (Iraq) on April 8 for the first leg. The team is racing against time to recover key players Khaled Ibrahim, Abdulaziz Wadi, and Bader Al-Mutawa, who are nursing muscle injuries. Elsewhere, Kazma took a major step toward Premier League survival, climbing to seventh place with 19 points after a 2-0 victory over Yarmouk. With three matches remaining, it needs just one more point to secure its place. On the other hand, Yarmouk's survival hopes are fading, sitting at the bottom of the table with six points. To avoid relegation, it must win all three of its remaining matches while hoping Al-Nasr (9 points) continues to drop points.
