Qatar bids to host 2036 Olympic Games
DOHA: Doha is bidding host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, authorities said on Tuesday, as the wealthy Gulf state sets its sights on yet another major sport event to diversify its energy-reliant economy. One of the smallest and wealthiest states in the Gulf, Qatar had already hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Should it be chosen, Qatar would become the first country in the Middle East and North Africa to host the Olympic Games, said Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani. 'The official bid submitted by the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games represents a new milestone in Qatar's journey,' he said in a statement shared on the official Qatar News Agency. India's 2036 Games bid a chance to boost infrastructure, says sports governance expert 'The bid builds on Qatar's proven track record of successfully hosting major international sporting events, most notably the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022,' Sheikh Mohammed added. Amnesty International and other rights groups claimed thousands of migrant workers died in the lead-up to the 2022 tournament, though Doha has said only 37 workers on World Cup projects perished – and only three in work-related accidents. President of the Qatar Olympic Committee Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani said Doha had ' made sport a central pillar of our national strategy'. 'We currently have 95 percent of the required sports infrastructure in place to host the Games, and we have a comprehensive national plan to ensure 100 percent readiness of all facilities,' he said. Countries are no longer required to make their Olympic bids public. The Games are meant to rotate continents every season. With the 2024, 2028, and 2032 editions set for Europe, North America, and Oceania, there are high chances the 2036 Olympic Games will be held in Asia – or in Africa, which would be a first. Choosing the next host of the games will be the first major project for the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) new president Kirsty Coventry, who last month became the first woman to lead the body.

Private hospital referrals cover all specialties and treatments: HMC official
Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has revealed that the partnership agreement it recently signed with four leading private hospitals to refer Qatari patients with long waiting times at HMC facilities includes all medical specialties and procedures, with HMC covering the full cost of treatment. In a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Nasser Al Naimi, Chief of Patient Experience at HMC and Director of the Hamad Healthcare Quality Institute, said the agreement aims to ensure timely access to high-quality healthcare for Qatari patients. He stressed that the referral programme encompasses all specialties and medical procedures. Each referral is individually assessed to ensure that the private hospital has the necessary expertise and facilities, guaranteeing optimal care for the patient. Al Naimi explained that the referrals include all services related to the patient's case, such as surgical procedures (if required), laboratory tests, radiology, physiotherapy, and other treatments, in accordance with the patient's diagnosis and treatment plan. Earlier this month, HMC signed a partnership agreement with four top private hospitals in Qatar: Al Ahli Hospital, Al Emadi Hospital, Aman Hospital, and Doha Clinic Hospital. The agreement is designed to improve access to healthcare services for Qatari citizens, reduce wait times, and enhance the overall patient experience. Under this agreement, Qatari patients facing long waiting periods at HMC clinics and departments will be referred to these private hospitals for expedited appointments and care. Al Naimi noted that the programme targets all Qatari patients with prolonged wait times, with priority given to those waiting over two weeks for an appointment or more than a month to see a doctor. He emphasised that referred patients will not bear any costs, as HMC fully covers all treatment expenses associated with the referral. The referral process is closely monitored to ensure equitable distribution of patients and the efficient use of healthcare resources. Referrals are facilitated through a secure electronic platform, ensuring confidentiality and seamless data exchange with the private hospitals. Eligible patients are contacted to obtain their consent before the referral is initiated. Once consent is given, the referral is transmitted securely via the platform. Additionally, selected physicians at the participating private hospitals have been granted limited, secure access to patients' medical files at HMC to support continuity of care. Patients may also request their medical reports from HMC when needed to assist in treatment decisions at the referral facility. Al Naimi highlighted that this referral initiative initially began with The View Hospital and has now expanded to include five private hospitals. This reflects a strategic shift toward leveraging the private healthcare sector's capabilities in the interest of improving patient care. He concluded by noting that the success of this initiative is being measured through key performance indicators such as reduced waiting times, patient satisfaction with the referral process, and continuity of care. Al Naimi expressed confidence that the program will significantly enhance the treatment experience for Qatari citizens.

Democratic Republic of the Congo Signs Peace Agreement with M23 Rebel Movement - Jordan News
On Saturday, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) signed a peace agreement with the M23 rebel movement, guaranteeing a ceasefire and an end to hostilities. اضافة اعلان The agreement was signed during a televised public ceremony held in Doha, the capital of Qatar, following the latest round of negotiations between the two sides. Since early July, Qatar has been mediating talks between a delegation from the Congolese government and representatives of the M23 movement. This is not the first time that Doha has hosted negotiations between the Congolese government and M23, or broader efforts aimed at achieving a ceasefire and ending the armed conflict in eastern Congo. In April 2025, representatives from Qatar, Togo, the United States, France, the DRC, and Rwanda convened in Doha to discuss efforts to address the situation in eastern DRC and the ongoing dialogue between the Congolese government and M23, according to Qatar News Agency (QNA). The March 23 Movement, also known as the "Congolese Revolutionary Army," is an armed rebel group active in the eastern regions of the DRC, particularly in North Kivu Province, which borders both Uganda and Rwanda. The United Nations and the DRC have accused Rwanda of supporting the M23 movement — an allegation Rwanda denies. M23 was formed after the collapse of a peace agreement signed on March 23, 2009. Most of its fighters belong to the Tutsi ethnic group, the same group as Rwandan President Paul Kagame.
