Hong Kong's Oliver Xu and Ma Kong-san drafted into Chinese Basketball Association league
Hong Kong basketball players Oliver Xu and Ma Kong-san have found their way into the Chinese Basketball Association league after both were selected at the CBA Draft on Saturday. Xu, 29, was selected by Nanjing Monkey Kings with the No 9 pick in the opening round, while Ma, 24, was picked up by Sichuan Blue Whales in the second round, with the overall No 22 pick. Nanjing and Sichuan finished 12th and 19th, respectively, in the 20-team league last season. The 1.90-metre (6 feet 2 inches) Xu, who plays as a guard, joined the Japanese 3 side Iwate Big Bulls at the start of the year, averaging 10.6 minutes, 4.0 points, and 1.6 rebounds in 26 matches. The Hong Kong international went to the United States in July to feature in the Drew League – a pro-am basketball league held every summer in Los Angeles, California – and did not return to Qingdao for the draft. This year's Chinese Basketball Association Draft was held in Qingdao. Photo: Handout Ma, who had played professionally in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan previously, had spent the past two seasons with local A1 Division side Shung Tak Eagles. He was at the Guoxin Gymnasium for the draft and the 2.08m centre went onto the stage to put on a Sichuan cap after his name was called.

Chinese NBA rookie reveals dad's crucial advice before embarking on basketball journey
The Portland Trail Blazers acquired the draft rights to 7-foot-1 center Yang Hansen out of China this summer in a trade with the Memphis Grizzlies, and he's looking to make an immediate impact. Yang, 20, is relatively unknown to fair-weather basketball fans. He's been playing basketball in China since he was in elementary school and eventually made his way to the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), playing for the Qingdao Eagles. He was a CBA All-Star in 2024 and 2025 and named the 2024 Defensive Player of the Year before he was brought up in NBA circles. He's set to become a key part of the Trail Blazers under head coach Chauncey Billups. Yang, whose father Yang Lin was a pro basketball player, opened up about why he decided to play basketball in an interview with The Washington Post. He told the paper that he was set to quit sports altogether at the age of 8 when he refused to practice outside in the heat. His father urged him to work hard at something that could help him get into college. According to the report, Yang tried several sprots before he returned to basketball. "I wasn't that good at school, and I was a little bit of a fat boy," he told The Washington Post. "My father told me to try some sports, figure out what you want to do and lose some weight. My father told me: 'Don't become fat.'" Yang is set to become the ninth Chinese NBA player when he eventually takes the floor for Portland. He will follow in the footsteps of the legendary Yao Ming and former star Yi Jianlian. Cui Yongxi is the only other active Chinese player. He played five games for the Brooklyn Nets last season, but his year was cut short when he tore his ACL in a G League game. Yang acknowledged the pressures that will come from being from China and playing in the NBA. "It's a lot of pressure, for sure," he told the newspaper. "I just want to show the people in China I'm doing good. Before I headed to the States, Yao called me and shared some of his experiences. He told me to enjoy your food, enjoy your drinks, enjoy your sleep and enjoy everything. "Yao is the icon for Chinese basketball. He's special. I'm just a rookie. I can feel a lot of expectations and anticipation on me. Yao is number one in paradise. Compared to him, I'm cold ash in a pot." Can the China-backed SCO convince India and Pakistan to resolve their differences?
The meeting in the eastern Chinese city of Qingdao last month was the first time that cabinet ministers from Pakistan and India had been in the same room since a deadly conflict in early May. The defence ministers from the two neighbours were in China under the umbrella of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), a regional political, security and economic group. This week it was the turn of SCO foreign ministers , who met in the northern Chinese port city of Tianjin. It, too, was a rare chance for Indian and Pakistani officials to come together – if only in a group setting. The two countries have been engaged in an uneasy truce since a terrorist attack in the Indian-administered resort town of Kashmir killed 26 tourists escalated into several days of heavy cross-border military fire . New Delhi blamed Islamabad-backed militants for the attack, accusations Pakistan denied. While there was no apparent bilateral engagement this week, the foreign ministers of both countries used the SCO platform to state their claims on the conflict. Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar cited the April attack as 'a graphic example of terrorism', pointing the finger at Islamabad.
