Salam: Restoring sovereignty, trust key to Lebanon's recovery

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said in an address he delivered at a conference titled, 'Rebuilding Lebanon: Investment Framework and Business Opportunities' that Lebanon's financial collapse stems from poor governance and impunity, and stressed that the country faces immense challenges. Salam noted that Israeli attacks devastated infrastructure and disrupted lives, yet the Lebanese people and businesses remained resilient. 'It is time to rebuild the state—this is a core mission of my government,' Salam added, outlining key pillars: restoring sovereignty, securing borders, and stabilizing the country. Moreover, the PM announced enhanced control over all entry and exit points, particularly Beirut's airport, and revealed plans to reopen Qlayaat Airport. He further confirmed the disarmament of over 500 weapons depots in the south and heightened security at Beirut Airport. Emphasizing transparency, Salam cited progress on depositors' rights, judicial independence, and upcoming legislation for AI governance. The PM also reaffirmed Lebanon's commitment to the safe return of Syrian refugees and rebuilding cultural and sports institutions.

Rahi: Israeli Attacks Violate Ceasefire, Calls for State-Controlled Weapons

Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros Rahi announced after meeting with President of the Republic Joseph Aoun at the Baabda Palace that "we discussed general matters and did not address the Israeli attacks on some Lebanese towns," adding, "The Israeli attacks are violations of the ceasefire, Lebanon is committed to diplomatic efforts, and weapons must be in the hands of the state." Rahi emphasized that "Qlayaat Airport is essential, as having two airports in Lebanon is important, especially for northern residents; multiple airports create job opportunities for Lebanese people, and reforms are a top priority for the president."

Salam visits Qlayaat Airport, reveals initial vision for a master plan within three months

NNA - Prime Minister Nawaf Salam revealed that "an agreement has been concluded with Dar Al-Handasah Company to prepare a free study for the operation of Qlayaat Airport," adding that "within three months, a preliminary vision for a master plan will be presented to launch the facility's operations." Salam's words came during a visit to Akkar Governorate on Tuesday, which began at the airport, where his helicopter landed on its runway. Salam toured the area, promising a second visit to the region to launch the master plan and other projects. He pointed to "the importance of public-private partnerships to engage in numerous investments, particularly in the north and at the airport." He said, "Yesterday, I chaired a meeting of the Higher Council for Privatization to reactivate it," adding, "We don't consider ourselves remote from Akkar, even though it is geographically distant from Beirut. We know that Akkar has suffered from decades of neglect, and we have clear plans to address the injustice. There is an urgent need to control the borders." Salam also stressed "full readiness to achieve stability and support Akkar in confronting all the challenges it faces, including the recent Syrian displacement crisis, and addressing all the problems occurring at the crossings." For their part, Akkar MPs welcomed Salam, considering his presence a confirmation of the commitment to the oath of office and the ministerial statement. They noted that Salam's visit to Rene Moawad Airport in Qlayaat is evidence of interest in the region's development. They underlined "the necessity of activating the airport's operations, given its economic and national importance and its potential to improve national income." Akkar's deputies expressed "great hopes for the government and its plan to achieve balanced development, in addition to improving the transportation sector in the north and enhancing infrastructure." They considered PM Salam's visit as historic and fundamental for the future, in terms of projects that can be launched. Public Works and Transport Minister Fayez Rasamny indicated that "a delegation from Dar Al-Handasah visited the airport some time ago and presented a preliminary vision on how to revitalize the airport," adding that "there are opportunities to leverage the airport's geographic location, which will enhance the chances of attracting investors." Rasamny went on, "We will work along two paths: operating the airport and promoting development in the region. Here, we can consider turning it into a cargo airport by taking advantage of the proximity to Tripoli Port, creating a free zone there, while looking into the possibility of creating an area for aircraft maintenance as well."

Rasamny: We are committed to developing Tripoli Port, operating Qlayaat Airport

President of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Agriculture of Tripoli and North Lebanon Toufic Dabbousi, welcomed Minister of Public Works Fayez Rasamny, Chairman and Director General of the Investment Development Authority of Lebanon (IDAL), Dr. Mazen Soueid, and Director General of the Ministry of Public Works, Transport, and the Port of Tripoli, Dr. Ahmad Tamer. The meeting was attended by members of the Chamber's board, including Jean El Sayed, Georges Najjar, Mostafa Al-Yamk, and Khodr Habib, as well as a number of business figures such as Hamed Zakaria, Khaled Dabbousi, Ritchie Heikal, and engineer Yasser Dabbousi. Discussions reportedly focused on the pivotal role of Tripoli Chamber in supporting and developing Lebanon's public infrastructure through integrated investment and logistical projects aimed at strengthening the country's economic position in the Eastern Mediterranean. Talks underscored the significance of a productive public-private partnership in advancing these initiatives. In turn, Minister Rasamny emphasized that his visit to the Tripoli Chamber was part of efforts to chart a new course for the Tripoli Port and René Moawad Airport in Qlayaat. "We previously visited the South, and today we are in the North on a tour that includes various regions, particularly those affected by the Israeli aggression and those with economic potential," Rasamny stated. "In the North, we can focus more on Qlayaat Airport and the Port of Tripoli, for which we have a comprehensive development plan. As you know, we have committed to making Qlayaat Airport operational, and that is why we are discussing this matter at the Tripoli Chamber." Responding to a question about upcoming projects for the North, Rasamny highlighted the importance of infrastructure improvements, particularly road networks leading to the region. "We have a project for these roads, in addition to development plans for the Port of Tripoli and Qlayaat Airport. Implementing projects in these key facilities will yield economic benefits and enhance the well-being of citizens," he noted. On the possibility of administrative appointments in the upcoming Cabinet session on Thursday, Rasamny stated, "Appointments are expected, but we have not yet received any confirmation on this matter."
