11 dengue-related deaths reported in Vietnam's south
August 14, 2025 HO CHI MINH – The number of dengue fever cases in the southern region in the first eight months of the year rose by 97 per cent compared to the figure for the entire year of 2024, according to the latest report of the Pasteur Institute in HCM City. As of August 3, the southern region recorded more than 44,400 dengue cases and 11 dengue-related deaths compared to only 22,473 cases and seven deaths in the same period last year. Around 70 per cent of the 11 reported deaths were adults. The number of dengue cases in the south in the first six months of 2025 was equivalent to the entire year of 2024, said Dr. Lương Chấn Quang, head of the Institute's Department of Disease Control and Prevention. Test results of nearly 500 serum samples show that dengue virus serotype 2, also known as DENV-2, has been predominant since 2022, Quang said at a meeting on the response to dengue fever and infectious diseases held on Tuesday in HCM City. DENV-2 often causes large outbreaks and has a higher rate of severe illness than other types, he said. The rate of severe cases is currently at 2.3 per cent, equivalent to the average of many years. The mortality rate remains low at 0.027 per cent in adults and 0.021 per cent in children. Regarding Chikungunya disease, no cases have been detected through surveillance systems in border provinces, he said. However, there is a risk of the mosquito-borne Chikungunya virus entering Việt Nam. Chikungunya is spread by Aedes species mosquitoes, the same types of mosquitoes that spread dengue viruses. As of August 3, the southern region recorded 36,141 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease and 11 deaths from hand, foot and mouth disease. The number of cases increased by 31.7 per cent compared to the same period last year. It is forecast that hand, foot and mouth infections will increase at the beginning of the upcoming school year. Meanwhile, the region recorded 38,850 measles cases and seven deaths over the period.

Low dong woes
Growing concerns: Tourists feed fish at a Koi fish cafe in Ha Long, Quang Ninh province. ACV expresses concern that despite signs of recovery in the aviation industry, the company could suffer huge losses due to exchange rate fluctuations. — AFP HANOI: Sharp fluctuations in exchange rates during the first half of 2025 have significantly raised financial costs for Vietnamese importers and companies with foreign currency (forex) loans, cutting into profits across several sectors. Although pressures are expected to persist in the latter half of the year, the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) has reaffirmed its commitment to a proactive, flexible monetary policy aimed at managing exchange rates in line with macroeconomic fundamentals and ensure smooth functioning of the forex market. According to Pham Chi Quang, head of the SBV's Monetary Policy Department, the Vietnamese dong depreciated by around 2.8% against the US dollar by the end of June, despite the dollar index falling to its lowest level in three years. 'This is largely due to the widening interest rate differential between the dong and the US dollar, as domestic interest rates were slashed to spur economic growth following government directives,' Quang said. As of July 25, official exchange rates ranged from 25,930 dong to 26,330 dong per US dollar at major commercial banks, compared to late June levels of around 26,270 dong. On the informal market, rates even exceeded 26,480 dong, showing continued upward momentum. Beyond the US dollar, the dong also weakened against the euro and the Japanese yen. At Vietcombank, the euro/dong rate stood at 31,470 dong and the yen/dong at 182.08 dong, both up over 10% since the start of the year. Nguyen The Minh, director of retail research at Yuanta Vietnam Securities, said the US dollar/dong pair had risen sharply, driven by interest rate gaps and higher demand for US dollars. Vietnam's trade surplus, typically a buffer, had also weakened this year. In the first six months of 2025, total trade turnover reached over US$431bil, up 16% year-on-year. Exports rose 14% to US$219bil, while imports surged nearly 18% to over US$212bil. The trade surplus narrowed to US$7.2bil, a 41% drop from the same period in 2024. Foreign investors have withdrawn roughly 40 trillion dong from the stock market so far this year, further pressuring the forex market. — Viet Nam News/ANN

Man arrested for alleged online sexual coercion of minors in Vietnam

Nguyen Duy Quang, 26, was charged with 'abusing a person under 16 years old for pornographic purposes' under Vietnam's Penal Code, following a formal decision to initiate criminal proceedings and place him in temporary detention. The investigation began in early May after the police received a complaint from a woman who discovered that her 14-year-old daughter had been threatened and forced into explicit acts by a Facebook user named 'Nguyen Minh Hieu.' The acts were reportedly carried out over video call platforms, including BigoLive and Messenger. Several days later, the police say they caught Quang red-handed using the Facebook account to commit online sexual coercion. Officers seized all electronic devices belonging to the suspect. Quang confessed to creating multiple Facebook accounts under names such as 'Quang Nguyen' and 'Nguyen Minh Hieu.' He used these accounts to connect with students in Lam Dong Province. The police said he posed as a clothing store owner in downtown Dalat and claimed to be financially well-off, offering iPhones or outings in exchange for sensitive photos and videos from the students. After receiving the materials, Quang allegedly pressured the victims into joining group video calls and performing further acts in Messenger groups he created. If they refused, he threatened to send the images and videos to their families and friends or post them online. He profitted by collecting mobile phone top-up cards from group members who paid to view the content. At least four victims — all students in lower or upper secondary school — have been identified so far. The police are initiating criminal proceedings against Quang. Authorities urge parents to be vigilant in supervising and protecting children online and to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement. - Vietnam News/ANN

Oman drub Vietnam 7-1 in Beach Soccer Asian Cup opener
MUSCAT: Former champions Oman, under coach Talib Hilal, delivered a commanding performance in their opening match of the AFC Beach Soccer Asian Cup Thailand 2025, defeating Vietnam 7-1 in Pattaya, Thailand, on Friday. With this impressive win, Oman will look to maintain their momentum when they face Malaysia next on Sunday in Group D, while Vietnam aims to regroup and bounce back against Bahrain on Sunday. Bahrain beat Malaysia 4-3 in another pool match. It took Oman less than ten seconds to break the deadlock, as Abdullah Masoud Salim opened the scoring. Salim expertly controlled Khalid Khamis Al Oraimi's overhead cross, evading two Vietnam defenders before placing the ball into the bottom right corner past goalkeeper Nguyen Anh Quang. The West Asians doubled their lead just six minutes later through a well-taken penalty by Sami Fail Al Balushi, which sailed past Quang and into the back of the net. Oman continued to press forward, with Salim coming close to scoring his second in the 10th minute, but his shot struck the woodwork. Vietnam's best chance of the first period came in the final moments when Quang's long-range effort was denied by the crossbar. The second period saw Oman extend their advantage further, with Mushel Hilal Al Araimi's stunning long-range strike finding the net to make it 3-0. Vietnam, under coach Van Duc, struggled to break through Oman's resolute defence. The Abdullah-Al Oraimi combination remained a constant threat. Moments later, Abdullah scored his second goal of the game, converting from Al Oraimi's precise corner kick to put Oman firmly in control. Vietnam showed some signs of life in the third period when Phan Dat headed in a goal from Ho Quoc Hung's well-delivered corner kick, reducing the deficit to 4-1. However, Oman quickly regained their dominance. With six minutes remaining, Ahmed Rabi'a Al Owaisi converted a penalty to give Oman their fifth goal. The final minutes were a flurry of action as Musallam Mahfoodh Al Araimi netted twice in quick succession, sealing a comprehensive 7-1 victory for Oman.
