Notably, BSNL is the now first Indian operator to showcase a production-grade SIM-less 5G service, which is built on BSNL's Direct-to-Device platform so the customer's CPE auto-authenticates – no physical SIM required, as per a report carried by news agency ANI. BSNL eyes 5G strategy to stack up against Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea
NEW DELHI: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited ( BSNL ) is adopting a 'multi-fold strategy' to launch commercial fifth generation or 5G services concurrently with 4G network densification, carried out by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)-led consortium with an additional 19,000 sites. 'BSNL has placed an order for an additional 19,000 sites to densify its 4G footprint, with seamless software upgrade capability to 5G. This follows the successful commissioning of around 90,000 4G sites,' A. Robert Ravi , Chairman and Managing Director, BSNL told ETTelecom. In May this year, Tata Consultancy Services received a Rs 2,903.22 crore order from BSNL for supplementary 18,685 4G network sites, involving planning, installation, and maintenance, to strengthen its rural and urban coverage. 'Our 5G Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) model has already been awarded in Delhi, with similar pilots ongoing in Mumbai and other major metros,' Ravi said. In addition to existing network upgradation to next generation (5G) technology, the 5G NaaS uses homegrown technology. 'We are also introducing India's first indigenous, SIM-less 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) service—Quantum 5G FWA—which aims to deliver high-speed broadband to targeted enterprises, remote and underserved regions.' State-controlled telco's 5G rollout uses a Standalone (SA) core, supporting advanced features like network slicing for dedicated enterprise bandwidth, industrial IoT applications, and mission-critical services. The service, already demonstrated in Hyderabad, leverages both the 700 MHz and 3.3 GHz bands, ensuring deep rural penetration and urban capacity. BSNL's private sector rivals, such as Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Jio and Sunil Mittal-driven Bharti Airtel kicked off commercial 5G networks in October 2022, while third-largest Vodafone Idea (Vi), a late entrant, launched next-generation services in March 2025. 'Our direct-to-device 5G platform is SIM-less and designed for efficient, easy installation, delivering low-latency, high-speed connectivity ideal for virtual collaboration, gaming, and IoT applications,' Ravi added. The public-sector telecom operator plans to extend trials of Quantum 5G FWA to cities such as Bengaluru, Pune, Gwalior, Chandigarh, Puducherry, and Visakhapatnam within this calendar year. Telco's enterprise business segment, which contributes approximately 20% of BSNL's revenues, is targeted to grow by at least 15% next year through tailored IoT solutions, private 5G slicing, and government networks. 'We are expecting to maintain at least 5-6% of revenue from data services next year,' the top official added. Further, Ravi said that once network quality becomes stable, people would latch onto BSNL's 4G network, enabling the company's service revenue to swell to more than 10%. Recently, the Minister of State for Communications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani said that once the ongoing deployment is completely secured, the Centre might look at placing a purchase order (PO) for procuring network gear for an additional 1 lakh 4G sites, following the Cabinet nod. Experts say that the state-run telco must move up quickly and deploy 'several thousand' more 4G sites to match the private sector competition. BSNL said that it is witnessing improved adoption of its 700 MHz spectrum deployments as device ecosystem support grows. The company is also in "advanced discussions with domestic smartphone manufacturers" to enable affordable bundling offers for customers. The public sector telco said that it aims to take the benefits of advanced digital connectivity to 140-crore Indians, focusing on rural and remote regions, to align with the broader vision of a "digitally-empowered society." Mumbai-based TCS-led consortium that includes Tejas Networks and the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT), is setting up data centres and a commercial 4G network, with a potential BSNL 5G upgrade, following a proof-of-concept (PoC).

BSNL is gearing to launch its commercial 5G services, under the Quantum 5G banner, in India soon. The state-run telco is ramping up capacity by setting up towers and as per the latest news, as many as 90,000 of them are already up and running. To celebrate the milestone, BSNL has announced a limited-time promotional 'flash sale' event where it is giving away 400GB of high-speed 4G data at the rate of Rs 1 per GB. advertisementStarting June 28, BSNL users are eligible to get a new special data recharge pack worth Rs 400 which entitles them to get 400GB of data with a validity of 40 days. The scheme runs through July 1. Since this is a data recharge, users are required to buy it in conjunction with an existing plan. There are no calling or SMS benefits – just 400GB of data. BSNL hints that data will remain unlimited as 'speed reduces to 40 kbps' post 400GB. BSNL recently announced that its 5G services – commercial as well as enterprise – will launch under the name of Quantum 5G or Q-5G. The name was outsourced from the public. As part of the rollout commencement, BSNL unveiled FWA, or fixed wireless access service called Quantum 5G FWA for enterprises in select circles and cities, giving customers access to high-speed connectivity without requiring a SIM card. The telco has been simultaneously running 5G trials for commercial use in Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Bhopal, Kolkata, Patna, Hyderabad and Chennai. advertisement BSNL 5G is being billed as a next-generation telecom network which is built indigenously from the ground-up. New Delhi [India], June 20 (ANI): The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced the soft launch of BSNL Quantum 5G FWA (Fixed Wireless Access). This indigenous, SIM-less fixed-wireless-access solution delivers fibre-like speeds over 5G radio, according to an official release issued by the Ministry of Communications. BSNL made this announcement on June 18 in Hyderabad. The service was inaugurated at BSNL's Ameerpet Exchange by A Robert J Ravi, Chairman and Managing Director, BSNL/MTNL. 'Quantum 5G FWA demonstrates how Indian engineers can create world-class connectivity. It is the first SIM-less, 100 per cent home-grown customised 5G FWA for BSNL,' Ravi said. 'Hyderabad's tech-savvy ecosystem makes it the perfect launch pad for our next-generation access portfolio. Today is only a soft launch--many more cities and feature upgrades will follow,' he added. BSNL is the first Indian operator to showcase a production-grade SIM-less 5G service, which is built on BSNL's Direct-to-Device platform so the customer's CPE auto-authenticates - no physical SIM required. It has a fully indigenous stack with core, Radio Access Network (RAN), and CPE designed and integrated by Indian vendors under the Atmanirbhar Bharat programme. Ameerpet recorded 980 Mbps DL / 140 Mbps UL with sub-10 ms latency--ideal for UHD streaming, cloud gaming, and remote work. Its self-install gateway reaches 85 per cent of Hyderabad households under the existing BSNL tower grid; no trenching or fibre pull is required. After the soft launch, the pilot will be expanded to Bengaluru, Pondicherry, Visakhapatnam, Pune, Gwalior, and Chandigarh and will go live by September 2025. Introductory plans at Rs 999 for 100 Mbps and Rs 1499 for 300 Mbps. The same 5G SA core will support network-sliced, SLA-backed links for MSMEs and smart-manufacturing clusters. This is a controlled ('soft') launch intended for customer experience fine-tuning; nationwide commercial roll-out will follow after field feedback. NEW DELHI: State-controlled telecom carrier Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited ( BSNL ) has soft-launched its SIM-less 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) solution, 'Quantum 5G FWA', in select cities of Hyderabad. This will be followed by expansion on pilot-basis in other key cities including Bengaluru, Pondicherry, Visakhapatnam, Pune, Gwalior and Chandigarh by September 2025. A soft-launch is intended to gather customer experience feedback for fine-tuning various parameters ahead of a wide-scale nationwide roll-out. Introductory plans for BSNL Quantum 5G FWA are priced at ₹999 for 100Mbps and ₹1,499 for 300 Mbps. This compares to Bharti Airtel 's 5G FWA plans priced ₹699, ₹799, and ₹899, and Jio's 5G FWA plans priced from ₹1,499. Notably, BSNL has yet to commercially launch its fifth-generation or 5G mobile services nationwide. The telecom PSU currently provides 4G services via a footprint of 1 lakh mobile towers. 'Quantum 5G FWA demonstrates how Indian engineers can create world-class connectivity. 'Hyderabad's tech-savvy ecosystem makes it the perfect launch pad for our next-generation access portfolio. This is only a soft launch; many more cities and feature upgrades will follow,' Ravi said. Its private sector rivals, Jio and Airtel, have been offering their respective 5G FWA services since late 2023. There were 7.5 million FWA subscribers as of April 2025, including Jio's 6.14 million and Airtel's 1.36 million. FWA additions (730,000) have already surpassed fixed broadband (370,000) and constitute 60-80% of the overall monthly broadband additions, analysis by Axis Capital showed earlier. According to the telco's statement, the service utilises BSNL's direct-to-device platform to automatically authenticate the subscriber's consumer premises equipment (CPE) without requiring a physical SIM card. This makes BSNL the first Indian telco to showcase a production-grade SIM-less 5G service, the statement added. It is built on a fully indigenous stack including the Core and the radio access network (RAN). The standalone (SA) 5G Core will also support network-sliced, service level agreement (SLA)-backed links for MSMEs and smart-manufacturing clusters. BSNL said the Quantum 5G FWA service recorded a peak download speed of 980Mbps and an upload speed of 140Mbps with sub-10ms latency in Ameerpet. Its self-install gateway reaches 85% of Hyderabad households under the existing BSNL tower grid, which eliminates the need for trenching or fibre pull.
