Fans call out SBW over sad post-fight act as Paul Gallen dragged into 'bizarre' scenes
Paul Gallen has won a controversial split-decision victory over Sonny Bill Williams in their boxing match and while the pair seem ready to put aside their bad blood it didn't stop the former All Blacks star leaving the ring before being interviewed. Gallen and former rugby union and league player Williams finally settled their differences in the ring on Wednesday with the duo taking part in a scrappy bout in front of thousands of fans. Williams started the stronger of the two having showcased his reach and superior jab to rough up Gallen's face. However, despite only being two minute rounds, Gallen took advantage of a fatiguing Williams who got a point deducted in the seventh round for repeatedly holding the former Sharks captain in the clinch. The fight turned into a scrappy bout as Williams clinched and his point deduction ultimately cost him with two judges scoring it 77-74 and 76-75 in favour of Gallen. While a third had New Zealander Williams winning 77-74. And the controversy started as soon as the cards were read out. Williams was clearly fuming with the decision and stormed out of the ring. While many agreed with the New Zealander that he won, his decision to leave came as a big disappointment for many in attendance and watching at home considering they would have liked to see him speak. Fans paid plenty of money to attend the event at Sydney's Qudos Bank Arena, but Williams' swift exit without an interview in the ring left fans wanting more. He also declined to attend the post-fight media conference. Fans felt it wasn't a good look after all the bad blood that had clouded the bout, which should have happened years ago when both fighters were closer to their prime. The bout drew plenty of criticism with Williams' tactics being questioned with plenty of clinching making for an ugly spectacle. While others felt Williams should have remained in the ring after the defeat. SBW's constant clinching was bizarre. He could've won the fight without it. Bro was straight up hitting double under hooks like it was an MMA fight at times. Probably lucky not to have another point deducted tbh. #SBWvGallen — Jordan Patu (@Jordan_Patu) July 16, 2025 SBW leaves the ring without an interview like he's off to France 🤣#SBWvGallen — GazDog 🇦🇺 (@TheGazDog) July 16, 2025 Enjoyed that, Gal's body shots were heavy! #SBWvGallen — Gavin Wilson... Didn't take him long to exit the ring - big heart wins again — Darrell Sessions (@sesho17) July 16, 2025 SBW left ring no interview surprise lol — Alan (@LastracePikey) July 16, 2025 SBW walks out again……!!! #sbwvsgallen — Wandering_dog ✋🏽😎 (@wander_bdog) July 16, 2025 Paul Gallen reveals exchange with SBW Gallen reacted with shock when the scorecards were read out having believed he clearly won the fight. Despite his shock at the judging, he revealed Williams wanted to bury the animosity and meet-up after the show is done. "I definitely lost one round, I think the second round and there was one other pretty close one and he got a point taken off, so how the hell is he winning (on one judge's card)?" Gallen said. "I got the win. That's all that matters and it will be there forever. "I'm 44 years old in less than a month's time. Sonny just came upon to me and said he wants to have a coffee man-to-man and I'm on for that. I've finished my fights, I'm getting on with my life. In a surprise admission, Gallen said he had Covid only a few weeks out from the bout and was just happy with the victory. "I'm not going to gloat, it's been a long time coming. I got the job done and that's all that matters," he added. The 43-year-old appears done with boxing as he turns his attention back to his commentary role for Channel Nine. Fans are still waiting to hear from Williams who did not address the media having appeared extremely disappointed with the split-decision loss.

Gallen quits boxing after beating Sonny Bill Williams in bout
Sonny Bill Williams, right, lands a blow on Paul Gallen during their boxing bout in Sydney, July 16, 2025. Photo: PHOTOSPORT Sonny Bill Williams won't get a rematch after Paul Gallen has announced his retirement from all sport following his split points win over Williams in their boxing bout in Sydney last night. The former Australian league legend was adjudged the winner by a single point, with two judges giving him the bout and another scoring in favour of Williams. After much mud-slinging between the pair before the fight, they shook hands afterwards, with Williams offering the chance for a post-bout coffee. "I'm just so happy it's over. That's it, that's my sporting career done," Gallen said after the fight. "I'm really relieved it's over and have come away with a victory which is what we intended to do." The 10-year animosity between the pair had been so deep that Gallen had said he wouldn't shake hands with Williams, but he did so as soon as the fight was over. Paul Gallen is declared winner by split decision following his main event boxing match against Sonny Bill Williams at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Wednesday, July 16, 2025. Photo: Photosport Gallen said he was impressed by Williams' gesture of reconciliation and would take up the coffee invite. "You've got to respect a man for that. "What has happened is in the past. I am 44 years old in less than a month and I'm too old to be having gripes with other grown men. "I'm happy to break bread with him and he said do you want to have coffee, and I said 'yeah'.'' Williams declined interviews after the bout, but his supporters were critical of the verdict. Two judges gave the fight to Gallen with 77-74 and 76-75 margins, while a third scored in favour of Williams, 77-74, leaving Gallen the victor by a point. A crucial factor was referee Les Fear deducting a point from Williams in the seventh round for persistent holding. Former super-middleweight world champion boxer Anthony Mundine called the result "ridiculous'', believing that Williams had won six rounds to two. "It just takes away from everything when you put so much hard work and dedication into a fight when you come off not the winner and you really did win,'' Mundine told Stuff. "He outboxed him. Boxing is hit and not be hit. Look at his face, that tells the story." Gallen said he was nervous about the verdict, after feeling he definitely lost two rounds. "At the end of the day I got the win, that's what we came here to do. There's no point in whinging or carrying on about it, I won and that's all that matters.'' Gallen said Williams' point deduction for persisent holding was deserved. "It was pretty clear he was holding me." But he said he was happy to end the grudge against Williams. "I don't know him very well, I don't him at all to be honest. But I have seen him with his kids and I know he is a fantastic father and highly devoted to his religion so you have to respect him for that." In one of the lead-up bouts, double Commonwealth Games gold medallist Kiwi David Nyika had a fifth-round TKO win over compatriot Nikolas Charalampous.

Sonny Bill Williams storms out and rejects post-fight interview as Paul Gallen is flipped off in fiery scenes
Paul Gallen beat his long-time rival Sonny Bill Williams on Wednesday night and safe to say his opponent didn't take it well. After countless stories, insults, accusations and missteps, the two former footy greats took to the ring at Qudos Bank Arena well after their primes to finally settle their beef once and for all. Williams looked much fitter and fresher in the early rounds, fighting behind his jab, but faded late as Gallen came on strong in the latter rounds to claim bragging rights by split decision, 77-74, 74-77, 76-75. Tszyu vs. Fundora 2 & Pacquiao vs. Barrios | SUN 20 JULY 10AM AEST | In the biggest fight of the year, Tim Tszyu faces Sebastian Fundora in a blockbuster rematch, plus Manny Pacquiao makes his highly anticipated return to the ring to face Mario Barrios. | Order now with Main Event on Kayo Sports. Post-fight, Gallen said he was shocked that even one judge gave it to SBW, feeling he had lost only one to two rounds. 'Seriously, how did they score that? I definitely lost one round, think there was another close one and he had a point taken off,' Gallen said. 'Anyway, I got the win, that's all that matters. I'm not going to gloat. It's been a long time coming, and I got the job done.' He then doubled down at the media scrum: 'You heard the crowd when his score was read out. Please, I won the fight, I won the fight.' But Sonny Bill formed a vastly different belief, feeling he was robbed of the win. Such was his dismay that he stormed out of the ring after the result was announced and refused to do a post-fight interview or address the media. After pushed for a comment on the result from the Sonny Bill camp, they came back with: 'You saw it, you can report on what you saw.' And while Gallen considers their beef settled, at least some of the SBW camp do not. Adding to the post-fight drama, Williams' former manager, Khoder Nasser, flipped off Gallen after the result was read and then argued with the Sharks great in the ring. He was escorted out by security, but by then, SBW was already halfway back to the dressing room, where the doors were firmly shut and it was made clear that no questions would be answered. And while Gallen thought the result was clear, many others believed SBW was hard done by, including Danny Green and Renee Gartner, who said in their opinion the Kiwi had done enough to win the fight. But nevertheless it will go down in the record books as a Gallen win. And with the 43-year-old saying he is 'too old to do this anymore', he goes out of the sport a winner.
