Matt Henry takes six wickets as Black Caps dominate Zimbabwe
Matt Henry Photo: PHOTOSPORT Seamer Matt Henry took six wickets as the Black Caps bowled out hosts Zimbabwe for 149 on the opening day of the first test at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo before scoring 92-0 in reply to trail by 57 runs. The 33-year-old Henry took three wickets before lunch and three more after the opening session to finish with figures of 6-39 off 15.3 overs as the tourists dominated, with spinner Nathan Smith making a significant contribution with 3-20. New Zealand opener Devon Conway scored an unbeaten 51 and Will Young 41 not out at stumps as they began their reply, looking to set the foundation for a significant first innings lead. Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bat but were 67-4 at lunch as Henry dismissed their top order cheaply. Zimbabwe, coming off a pair of heavy defeats at home by South Africa in the last six weeks, were unable to put together any significant partnerships with the highest being 54 runs for the sixth wicket between captain Craig Ervine and Tafadzwa Tsiga. Ervine top scored with 39 before Smith trapped him leg before wicket. The spinner also had Tsiga lbw for 30. New Zealand were without captain Tom Latham , who failed to recover from a shoulder injury, and Kane Williamson, who opted out of the two-test series, leaving Mitchell Santner to take the reins for his first test as captain. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe have added batter Brendan Taylor to their squad for the second test after he completed a three-and-a-half-year suspension imposed for breaching the ICC's Anti-Corruption and Anti-Doping codes. Taylor, 39, was banned in 2022 after admitting receiving US$15,000 (NZ$25,300) from an Indian businessman in 2019. He had retired from international cricket in September 2021. He admitted taking cocaine while in India and claimed this was later used to blackmail him into spot-fixing, though he denied going through with any fixes. Taylor has played 34 test matches since making his debut against Sri Lanka in 2004, scoring six centuries and 12 half-centuries. With 9 938 international runs across all formats, he is Zimbabwe's third-highest run-scorer. -Reuters

Zimbabwe's Taylor to return after corruption and drugs ban
Zimbabwe batsman Brendan Taylor has been added to his country's Test squad after serving a three-and-a-half year ban, Zimbabwe Cricket announced on Wednesday. The announcement was made during the first day of play in the first Test between Zimbabwe and New Zealand at Queens Sports Club. He will be available for the second Test, starting at the same venue on August 7. "I certainly did think it was all done, but here I am –- and it's an overwhelming feeling of gratitude," said Taylor, 39. "The last year and a half has certainly been dedicated to my return. I've put in an immense amount of work -– from fitness to the technical side to diet –- and I'm feeling a lot leaner, fitter and mentally stronger. "That's only been possible through sobriety." Taylor was found guilty in January 2022 of four charges under the International Cricket Council's (ICC) anti-corruption code and separately for failing a drugs test. Taylor admitted to travelling to India in 2019 and meeting an unknown individual who paid him $15,000. He initially claimed the money was an appearance fee but later admitted that he was paid following discussions about match fixing, which he said he had no intention of carrying out. He reported his contact with the individual to the ICC in March 2020 but did not mention discussions about corruption. He also deleted all communications with the individual. He tested positive for a cocaine metabolite in September 2021. Before the ban, Taylor was one of Zimbabwe's leading batsmen and racked up 2,320 runs in 34 Tests. He has also played in 205 one-day internationals and 45 Twenty20 internationals. Zimbabwe Cricket managing director Givemore Makoni welcomed Taylor's return. "Brendan has endured an incredibly difficult chapter in his life and shown genuine remorse, coupled with a powerful determination to make things right -- not just for himself but for the good of the game in Zimbabwe," said Makoni.

New faces impress as Proteas stretch winning streak to 10 in Zimbabwe
South Africa claimed a comprehensive innings and 236-run victory in the second match against Zimbabwe on Tuesday and stretched their current winning streak to 10 Tests. Corbin Bosch ripped out Zimbabwe's lower order, taking 4/38 on day 3 at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo as the hosts, who were bowled out for 170 in their first innings, capitulated for 220 the second time around. The South Africans wrapped up a 2-0 series win. Codi Yusuf picked up two wickets and left-arm spinner Senuran Muthusamy three, while Wiaan Mulder ended an extraordinary match for him by knocking out the off stump of Zimbabwe's best batter Sean Williams. Besides his record-setting 367 not out in South Africa's 626/5 declared, stand-in captain Mulder also picked up three wickets in the match, with four catches, and any sense he should be concerned about his place has been extinguished. 'I don't care where they want me to play, I just want to play. Whatever plans they have for me, I'm happy to try to execute,' Mulder said.
