'No more penis jokes': with Queens Wharf Tower gone, we need a grand design
For many years, one of the most prominent sites in Newcastle was known for a big phallic symbol that made some people laugh and other people sigh. Many enjoyed the ridiculousness of the shape of the Queens Wharf observation tower, while others were ashamed as they felt it brought the city down. But times are changing. The tower was removed in 2018 and Newcastle is reshaping itself into a modern metropolis that rises above the penis jokes. The site's owner, the City of Newcastle, has called for public comment on the future of Queens Wharf. This iconic harbourside site is badly in need of a spruce-up, after its western building was left to rot for years following a fire. University of Newcastle Professor Jennifer Martin suggested "something on the marine life we have in the harbour". "We should celebrate what we have compared to what we have lost. It could be a nice inner city place for reflection with Indigenous art," she said. A nod to the Hunter's history - shipping, coal, First Nations people and wildlife - makes sense. While a bit of art, history and nature could be part of the design, the site is likely to be redeveloped. How about an aquarium, convention centre, concert venue, nightclub or Ferris wheel? From ruin to revival: future of Queens Wharf precinct up for discussion
COMMUNITY members have been asked to give their two cents about the future of Queens Wharf. More than 35 years since the precinct was built as a bicentennial project and officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1988, City of Newcastle is looking to breathe new life into the harbourside landmark. The western building, which has gone to rack and ruin since a fire in May 2020, is set to be demolished as the council plans to lodge its development application later this month. Independent lord mayor Ross Kerridge encouraged members of the community to help shape the vision for Queens Wharf through consultation, which officially opened on Thursday. "The transformation of Queens Wharf is a chance to create a place that will be a meaningful landmark of our city for current and future generations alike. "We'll be working closely with the community and local businesses to ensure it reflects shared priorities and responds to real needs." The precinct includes two separate buildings, two car parks, a public promenade and the Transport for NSW-owned ferry wharf. Queens Wharf Hotel will continue to trade under its current lease. In October last year, the Newcastle Herald reported on the sorry state of the western building, which a passerby described as "nothing short of an embarrassment" and "a disgrace". At the time, a council spokesman said the council had no intention of selling Queens Wharf. He poured water on speculation a meeting had been held in March of 2024 between council chief executive Jeremy Bath and Syrian billionaire Ghassan Aboud, who turned the former council building into Crystalbrook Kingsley hotel, about the purchase of the site. One of the questions in the council's Queens Wharf survey asks how well respondents support an objective to "unlock opportunities for private investment in council-owned assets and attract interest from business and industry to partner with City of Newcastle to invest in the region". Mr Bath said the community consultation and future demolition of the western building were critical steps in realising a vibrant future for the site. "Queens Wharf is owned by City of Newcastle, and this won't change," he said. "Our vision is for this precinct to be the vibrant heart of Newcastle's waterfront, connecting Stockton, Honeysuckle, Foreshore Park and Newcastle East." Mr Bath said the revitalisation of Queens Wharf is a "complex undertaking" requiring careful due diligence, consultation with the community and detailed technical studies to guide its progression. "Site assessments for the western building have been under way throughout this year to prepare for the early works and approvals needed to support future redevelopment," he said. Members of the community can have their say through an online survey or in person at pop-up engagement stalls. Independent lord mayor Ross Kerridge encouraged members of the community to help shape the vision for Queens Wharf through consultation, which officially opened on Thursday. "The transformation of Queens Wharf is a chance to create a place that will be a meaningful landmark of our city for current and future generations alike. "We'll be working closely with the community and local businesses to ensure it reflects shared priorities and responds to real needs." The precinct includes two separate buildings, two car parks, a public promenade and the Transport for NSW-owned ferry wharf. Queens Wharf Hotel will continue to trade under its current lease. In October last year, the Newcastle Herald reported on the sorry state of the western building, which a passerby described as "nothing short of an embarrassment" and "a disgrace". At the time, a council spokesman said the council had no intention of selling Queens Wharf. He poured water on speculation a meeting had been held in March of 2024 between council chief executive Jeremy Bath and Syrian billionaire Ghassan Aboud, who turned the former council building into Crystalbrook Kingsley hotel, about the purchase of the site. One of the questions in the council's Queens Wharf survey asks how well respondents support an objective to "unlock opportunities for private investment in council-owned assets and attract interest from business and industry to partner with City of Newcastle to invest in the region". Mr Bath said the community consultation and future demolition of the western building were critical steps in realising a vibrant future for the site. "Queens Wharf is owned by City of Newcastle, and this won't change," he said. "Our vision is for this precinct to be the vibrant heart of Newcastle's waterfront, connecting Stockton, Honeysuckle, Foreshore Park and Newcastle East." Mr Bath said the revitalisation of Queens Wharf is a "complex undertaking" requiring careful due diligence, consultation with the community and detailed technical studies to guide its progression. "Site assessments for the western building have been under way throughout this year to prepare for the early works and approvals needed to support future redevelopment," he said. Members of the community can have their say through an online survey or in person at pop-up engagement stalls. City of Newcastle asset advisory committee chair, Labor Cr Declan Clausen, said the revitalisation of Queens Wharf will continue the transformation of Newcastle's historic East End into a thriving and dynamic destination. "We're reimagining Queens Wharf to celebrate our local identity and establish a legacy for future generations," he said. The survey says the council is considering temporary uses of the site while its long-term future is investigated, and asks the community for ideas of how the space might be used, including accommodating food trucks, markets, pop-up events and family-friendly activities. The first of four pop-up engagement stalls will be held at the Homegrown Markets at The Station on Saturday from 10am to 2pm. Future sessions will be held at Queens Wharf, Market Street Lawn and Stockton Foreshore. The survey is open on the council's website until September 3.
