Contra.Joburg 2025 is set to break all the rules of a visual arts festival
2025 is set to break all the rules of a visual arts festival Johannesburg's most radical visual arts festival, returns under a bold new theme: 'What if art interrupts you?', and promises a curated collision of surprise interventions and unscripted artistic experiences designed to disrupt expectations and expand the possibilities of visual art. Read more: FNB Art Joburg returns for the 18th consecutive year The festival will host over 170 visual artists, designers and makers from August 30-31, across unconventional spaces in the CBD of Johannesburg from rooftops and alleyways to galleries and forgotten buildings. Founder Sara Hallatt said, 'Every artist, every location, and every moment is chosen for its ability to surprise you to feel like it could only happen here and now. We want audiences to feel like they stumbled into something maybe by accident, maybe by fate.' Expect live glitches, sonic interventions, and collaborative installations that defy categorisation. The visual arts festival will take place over two days, with selected studios being open on these two different days. The studios will be linked via a shuttle service (that is included in the cost of the ticket) that will allow visitors to safely explore the city. The shuttles will move in a loop between the buildings, with transport available every 20 minutes. Based on demand last year, the hours have been extended with the event running from 10:00 until 17:00. The festival is also an engine for the creative economy. Since its launch, has facilitated nearly R3m in direct art sales, enabling working artists to grow their practices and collectors to build meaningful collections. Discover mindfulness through chair yoga with Daphne Maree at the Women's Wellness Event
Yoga instructor Daphne Mare. Image: Supplied. In a world that demands constant motion, finding stillness can feel impossible. Many women juggle the relentless pace of life, caring for others, managing work and home, and navigating emotional and physical exhaustion - leaving little time to simply breathe. However, on 30 August 2025, the Women's Wellness Experience offers a gentle pause through chair yoga. This is not yoga as performance; it is yoga as presence. 'Sitting is the most accessible posture we have,' explains instructor Daphne Maree. ' It doesn't require flexibility or strength, just a willingness to arrive. When you sit with awareness, you start to hear your body again. You remember that your breath is always here, anchoring you in the now.' Chair yoga provides a soft entry point into movement and mindfulness, especially for women who may feel disconnected from their bodies due to ageing, injury, trauma, or self-doubt. In this class, every breath becomes a moment of care and every gentle movement transforms into an act of reconnection. 'Presence is healing,' Mareeshares. 'We often live in our heads, that feeling of planning, rushing, comparing. But the body lives in the present moment. When we breathe consciously, we return to that moment. That's where resilience thrives.' Maree's teachings are deeply rooted in her five-month immersion at the Isha Foundation in India, where she learned to experience yoga not as an external performance but as an inner journey. 'With my eyes closed, distractions faded. I stopped striving and started listening,' she reflects. 'That's what I now offer to others.' Participants in her session will be guided through mindful breathwork, gentle seated movements, and embodied stillness, inviting a felt sense of safety and ease. The benefits are profound: reduced stress, increased clarity, emotiona lregulation and a renewed relationship with one's body. 'You don't need to be 'fit' to heal,' she emphasises. 'You need to feel safely, gently and with compassion.' Early bird tickets are R320 via Quicket. Come take a seat, take a breath and reclaim your power alongside a circle of women ready to return to themselves. Weekend Argus
