His spirit of service continues to inspire: PM Modi's tributes to iconic statesman Vajpayee
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tributes to former Prime Minister late Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his death anniversary, hailing the iconic statesman's spirit of service towards India's progress, which he said continues to inspire the countrymen to build a 'Viksit Bharat'. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born on December 25, 1924, in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. He was a statesman, poet, and writer from India who held the position of Prime Minister, initially for 13 days in 1996, then for 13 months from 1998 to 1999, and finally for a complete term from 1999 to 2004. Taking to X, PM Modi posted, "Remembering Atal Ji on his Punya Tithi. His dedication and spirit of service towards the all-round progress of India continue to inspire everyone in building a Viksit (developed) and Atmanirbhar (self-reliant) India." Vajpayee was the first Prime Minister since Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to have become Prime Minister of India with two-successive mandates. A veteran Parliamentarian whose career stretched over four decades, Vajpayee was elected to the Lok Sabha (House of the People) nine times and to the Rajya Sabha (House of the States) twice, a record by itself. As India's Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, Chairperson of various important Standing Committees of Parliament and Leader of Opposition, he was an active participant in shaping India's post-Independence domestic and foreign policy, according to the Prime Minister of India's official website. Vajpayee first encountered nationalist politics during his student days when he joined the Quit India Movement of 1942, which accelerated the end of British colonial rule. As a political science and law student, Vajpayee cultivated a strong interest in foreign affairs during his college years. This enthusiasm was effectively utilised by the former External Affairs Minister while representing India at various multilateral and bilateral forums. Vajpayee began his career in journalism, but it was cut short in 1951 when he joined the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the predecessor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Born into the family of a humble schoolteacher, Vajpayee became a leader respected for his liberal worldview and commitment to democratic ideals.

RS pays tributes to freedom fighters on eve of Quit India Movement anniversary
New Delhi, Aug 8 (PTI) Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh on Friday paid tributes to the heroes of India's freedom struggle ahead of the 83rd anniversary of Quit India Movement on August 9. The Deputy Chairman called it a historic day, and a defining moment in India's relentless struggle for independence. 'Launched under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi on August 9, 1942, the Quit India Movement marked a decisive and powerful call for an end to British colonial rule. With the clarion call of 'Do or Die', the movement galvanised the Indian masses into unprecedented action, uniting men and women, young and old, across regions and communities in the common cause of freedom," Harivansh said. He said, despite facing severe repression, imprisonments, and brutal suppression, the people of India displayed extraordinary courage and determination. The movement infused new energy and urgency into the freedom struggle and laid the groundwork for India's eventual independence five years later, he said. 'As we remember this monumental chapter of our history, we pay our respectful homage to the countless freedom fighters — both known and unknown — who endured immense hardships and made supreme sacrifices for the cause of the nation's liberty and dignity," he said. 'Let us, as members of this august House, reaffirm our commitment to the values of freedom, democracy, and justice that the Quit India Movement so valiantly upheld, and rededicate ourselves to building a strong, inclusive, and progressive India," Harivansh said. The MPs then observed a brief period of silence as a mark of respect to the freedom fighters. The Quit India Movement, also known as the August Movement, was a civil disobedience agitation launched by Mahatma Gandhi on August 8, 1942, demanding an end to British rule in India. Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia in spot over phansi-ghar
NEW DELHI: A day after Chief Minister Rekha Gupta asked for recovery from former CM Arvind Kejriwal, Rs 1.04 crore, his AAP government spent on a British-era 'fake' 'phansi-ghar' in the Delhi Assembly, Speaker Vijender Gupta on Thursday said that he was referring the matter to the House Privileges Committee. It will summon Kejriwal along with former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, ex-Speaker Ram Niwas Goel and former Deputy Speaker Rakhi Birla, he said. The Speaker, in his statement, said that after several days of sustained discussion in the House, supported by verified facts and documents, it was established that crores of rupees were spent on constructing a fake gallows and disseminating misleading advertisements within the Delhi Legislative Assembly complex. He said despite being given three days to present evidence justifying the expenses of building the structure, the AAP failed to do so. Their continued silence strengthened the conclusion that this was a deliberate and fraudulent act, he said. In contrast, authenticated documents received from the National Archives of India—including a 1912 map of the Assembly premises—along with research conducted by various esteemed institutions collectively confirmed that no gallows ever existed in this building, nor was there any tunnel leading from the Assembly premises to the Red Fort, as falsely claimed, Gupta said. 'When the so-called gallows was constructed in 2022, coinciding with the commemoration of the Quit India Movement on 9 August, my own emotions—along with those of fellow opposition members—were stirred with patriotic sentiment. However, after assuming the office of Speaker, and upon receiving verified documents from credible research institutions and national archives, it became painfully clear that this so-called gallows was a complete fabrication,' added the Speaker.
