Japanese Encephalitis vaccination drive in Tirunelveli district from today; over 2.99 lakh children to be covered

Vaccination against Japanese Encephalitis, a vector-borne disease spreading through Culex vishnui mosquitoes, will commence in the district from Wednesday (August 13). In a statement, District Collector R. Sukumar said the Culex vishnui mosquitoes breeding in the paddy or sugarcane fields spread the Japanese Encephalitis causing death in 25% of the cases while causing serious paralysis in 50% cases in the age group between 1 and 15. Hence, the vaccination drive is being launched in the district from August 13 onwards to protect the children from Japanese Encephalitis by organising special camps in the schools and the anganwadis. These proven safe vaccines will be administered by trained village health nurses and the nurses in the right antero lateral aspect of mid thigh for the children between the age of 1 and 2 while the injection will be administered in the right upper arm for the children between 3 and 15 years of age. In Tirunelveli district, 2,99,593 children including 86,153 children in the age of 1 to 5 and 2,13,440 children in the age of 5 and 15 will be vaccinated. If the children suffer fever with mild pain in the injection area after the vaccination, paracetamol may be given. If any other ailments are noticed after the vaccination, the children may be taken to the doctors of the primary health centres or the government hospitals for the right medical advise. The parents also contact 104 for medical assistance, Dr. Sukumar said.

Plea to build bridge across the river in flood-prone areas

Appealing to District Collector R. Sukumar to construct a flyover across the river flowing near their village, a group of people from Chidambarapuram near Kalakkad submitted a petition on Monday. The villagers from Chidambarapuram said the 77-year-old narrow bridge connecting their village with Kalakkad got submerged whenever there was a downpour in the Western Ghats and hence this structure had become weak. A pregnant woman was washed away in the flash flood on Deepavali eve in 2021 and eight persons have died far at this place. Hence, the Collector, considering the public safety, should instruct the officials concerned to construct a flyover after demolishing the existing bridge. 'If the government refuses to construct the new elevated bridge, we'll boycott the upcoming Assembly election,' said D. Yogarajan, vice-president of Chidambarapuram village committee. On behelf of the Dravida Thamizhar Katchi, its district secretary A. Sundar submitted a petition seeking patta for 10 Arunthathiyar families living in Kannanallur Kaspa near Thisaiyanvilai. The families, living there for the past four generations, were paying the taxes to the local body and the electricity bill. Hence, the patta should be given to the families, he said.

50 dropouts admitted in colleges in Tirunelveli district

The spot admission organised here on Friday by District Collector R. Sukumar to ensure the continued higher studies of the students after Plus Two brought 50 possible dropouts back to educational stream. After the Plus Two results were declared, the Collector established a Career Guidance and Counselling Centre at the Collectorate. The experts and the teachers manning this Centre were guiding and counselling the students for getting admission in the courses and the colleges of their choice based on the marks they had scored. Meanwhile, the Collector also asked the teachers handling Plus Two to collect details about their students who have got admission in the college and the course they had joined. After collecting this information, the teachers shared it with the Chief Educational Officer Sivakumar and the Career Guidance and Counselling Centre at the Collectorate so that the dropouts could easily be identified. The dropouts and their parents or guardians were contacted over the phone to pinpoint the reason behind their children becoming dropout. If it was due to poverty, Mr. Sukumar arranged for funds from the philanthropists, major hospitals, private firms to pay the tuition fee. If they could not get admission in a college or course of their choice due to low marks, they were counselled about the alternative courses they can join and the future prospects if they can do well. In the first phase, a 'spot admission' programme was organised at the Collectorate to ensure admission for the dropouts. While the poor students were helped financially, others' admission in the colleges were facilitated with the help of the heads of the colleges. Since the Plus Two students who had appeared for the supplementary examinations were waiting for admission in the colleges, the second 'spot admission' event was organised on Friday in which representatives from two government, 10 government-aided and 12 self-finance colleges participated. 'Of the 55 students attended this programme, 50 students got admission in the colleges,' said officials of Department of School Education. When a poor girl student, who had lost her parents to cancer, participated in the 'spot admission' programme, Mr. Sukumar got her admission in Zoology in Rani Anna Government College for Women, Pettai, here and immediately sanctioned ₹10,000 from the Collector's Discretionary Funds to pay the tuition, hostel fees and uniform.

National Handlooms Day celebrated in southern districts

District Collector R. Sukumar inaugurated the special discount sale of handloom products at the Collectorate on Thursday in view of the 11th National Handlooms Day. After inaugurating the sale, he said the 'Be Indian, Buy Indian' movement was launched on August 7, 1905, by Mahatma Gandhi in Kolkata to encourage the Indians to buy handloom products while shunning the imported clothes during the colonial rule. The clarion call had tremendous positive impact in the freedom struggle and fuelled the Swadeshi movement. Hence, this day was declared as National Handlooms Day in 2015 to enourage the sale of handloom products as women constitute more than 70% of the workforce in this 5,000-year-old industry. 'The products being exhibited here by the handloom weavers are sold with 20% discount and hence the government employees and the visitors to the Collectorate should buy the handloom products to help the weavers,' he said. The Collector, after honouring three 75-year-old weavers, handed over ₹6 lakh loan with interest subsidy to seven weavers, orders for construction of houses to 11 weavers, and looms to five weavers. Assistant Director of Handlooms, Tirunelveli, Arockiyaraj, and Handloom Officer Shenbagaraj were present. In Kanniyakumari district, Collector R. Alagumeena handed over loan of ₹20 lakh to 40 weavers. She exhorted the weavers to do 'ari' work, embroidery, and other handworks to make their products more attractive. 'We are imparting training in these arts. Hence, you should make use of it to reach more customers,' Ms. Alagumeena added.

Increase monthly honorarium to ₹15,000, say panchayat-level SHG confederation animators

The panchayat-level self-help groups confederation animators have appealed to the Tamil Nadu Government to increase their monthly honorarium to ₹15,000. In a petition submitted to Collector R. Sukumar on Monday during the weekly grievances redressal meet, they said the panchayat-level confederations for coordinating the self-help groups in the rural local bodies had been formed in the district with over 300 animator managing it. The animators, maintaining the records and the accounts of the federation, were getting honorarium of ₹5,000 a month from the interest accrued in confederation savings. However, the recent communique from the Additional Director of Tamil Nadu Women Development Corporation to the Project Manager, 'Mahalir Thittam', had fixed the honorarium between ₹1,500 and ₹3,000 based on the quantum of savings made by each confederation. 'Even though we are maintaining 16 records and 10 accounts and managing other special programmes including Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme and 'Ungaludan Stalin' programmes, the proposal to cut down the honorarium is something agonising. Instead, it should be increased to ₹15,000 a month. Hence, the communication from the Assistant Director of Tamil Nadu Women Development Corporation should be cancelled. Moreover, the animators, who have 15 years of service, should be appointed in vacancies in the panchayat unions as clerks', they said. On behalf of the Tirunelveli District Private Schools' Association, a petition was submitted seeking the early release of funds for students admission made under the Right to Education Scheme. The petitioner schools said the tuition fee to be paid by the government for the students admitted under the Right to Education programme for the academic years 2023 – 2024 and 2024 – 2025 in the private nursery, primary and matriculation schools was yet to be released. Since the arrears to be released by the government was exerting pressure on the schools, the government should release the funds immediately, the petitioners said. Seeking patta for their houses built under the tsunami victims rehabilitation programme at Thillaivanathoppu under Vijayapathi panchayat near Koodankulam in the district, 65 families submitted a petition to the Collector. A group of Social Democratic Party of India cadre submitted a petition against the shifting of the beedi workers' hospital from Melapalayam to Palayamkottai. They also demanded sustained steps by the Corporation to control stray dog menace.
